I have recently installed Qmail on a 486DX4 w- RedHat 5.1 + downloaded
updates and source compiled on for apache and named (bind). As long as I
followed the docos that came with Qmail, all went well. It took me a while
to get my head around Maildirs, but once I overcame that, a breeze to setup
and administer.

I have the RedHat RPMS that I used available for download at
ftp://ftp.gmcs.com.au/pub/linux/redhat/updates and the sources for the other
components I updated at ftp://ftp.gmcs.com.au/linux/sources . Most of these
where installed for security and flexibility reasons except the
qmail-imap...rpm which allows the POP server to use the Maildir format. You
can of course still use the older MBox format with your Redhat and Qmail.
Its just not as reliable (IMHO).

All you have to do is dial through AOL's normal number and use any TCP/IP
application you feel like, such as telnet or FTP.

Beware that some AOL access numbers are routed in strange ways. For some
reason, half of the access numbers in the Columbus OH area don't let me contact
my machines in San Francisco; i.e. I can log on to AOL and use AOL's FTP
client, but I can't use the external one. I resolved this one by using the
Windows' tracert command and a lot of trial and error.

I hope this helps.

Because AOL is the only ISP with worldwide local access numbers. I used them
for connecting to my Linux servers from San Francisco to Kazan.

I have two computers (a Linux PC and an NT laptop) connected with a
crossover ethernet cable, and neither can ping the other. The problem is
not:

(a) The network card in the PC, like I thought it was originally,
as I've since tested it out in another machine and it works
perfectly. Just to be on the safe side, I've switched to a
known working NE2000. It can ping itself with no problems.

(b) The network card in the laptop, which I use every day at work
(on another network) with no problems. It can ping its own
        IP address also.

(c) The crossover cable, which I have tried between the laptop
and another (Windows) PC, and I was able to ping between their
two IP addresses (without a hub) with no problems.

(d) Transmitting packets. From the Linux box, I can tell it is
transmitting packets properly because when I run netstat -i
it tells me so. From the NT machine I don't have a program
like netstat to use, but I can see the TX/RX light on the
ethernet card flashing when I ping from that machine.

(e) Routing. Both machines are set to route to the other through
their respective ethernet interfaces. Also, like I said,
they have no problem pinging themselves or transmitting ping
        packets.

OK, so now that we know what is *not* the problem, what *might* the
problem be?

Huge thanks for any responses! (Please cc by email if you can.)

I never had understood why so many people bother with NTP clients. Do
you really need millisecond precision? rdate is included with almost
all Linux and Unix distributions and works fine as long as you don't
need sub-second accuracy. It also generates a lot less network
traffic than NTP.

I found "chronyd" to be easy to set up and use. It queries Internet
time
servers when you go online and then occasionally as needed. It
computes
adjustments to clock drift, etc.

There is some related info on clock subjects in Gary's Encyclopedia at

Don't be more paranoid than necessary. A "/FIDO/" login will be triggered
by reception of one of two possible special characters. In your log file,
it looks like a modem connection without error control was established
(which happens every now and then with cheap modems), and LOTS of junk
was received (which is normal for a highspeed connection without error
control). One of those junk bytes hit the "magic fido byte", and mgetty
did as instructed, starting ifcico.

There was no buffer overflow attempt.

To my knowledge, there exists one exploit in early mgetty versions
(pre-1.1.x) - it was possible to send a fax with a very carefully
constructed fax sender ID and have mgetty's "new_fax" execute a command
up to 12 characters in length with root privileges. This has been fixed.

The log file messages ("only 500 bytes of ... logged") is there as
a protection against a faulty modem - or a malevolent attacker - filling
up the hard disk partition containing your mgetty log file by sending
lots and lots of junk bytes to a modem. It doesn't mean something
actually ran over.
