Did you enable "multiple NICs" in the kernel?
Did you load drivers for each?
Are the drivers modules?

It sounds like one is not being found, recognized, or initialized properly.

What does the boot messages say?  Are both card found?  Look in
/var/log/messages.

Is your PCMCIA configuration file setup correctly to handle two NICs?

This is not good... It looks like the MAC address on the NIC is either blown
or unreadable. The all "F" address is the Ethernet broadcast address. Have
you tried to flash upgrade this NIC recently?

Help!

My DNS server works fine. After a nslookup-command the DNS server caches
the
answer of the forwarders and after that is able to give the right IP
address
without asking the forwarders for a second time.

If I make a request over netscape or an other browser I get the right
answer
from the DNS server. But the DNS server doesn't cache the answer; he has
to ask
the forwarders for a second time. Why???

have this problem here, and i've been seeing that its become pretty
prevalent..  connecting linux to NT.  have a 3com 509 that it recognizes. 
the linux is a dual boot with 95 and the 95 can talk to the NT, but the linux
cannot..  tried tcpdump and it came up with "arp who-has tabitha.rumours tell
darren.rumours" the network has an  NT server, NT workstation, and the linux.
 when pingingthe workstation, a total of 15 out of 38, 000 packets went
through in about an 8 hour period of time.  the NT knows that the Linux is
there, just doesn't want to talk to it.  any suggestions would be great.

I�m sorry to have to post this once more, but I can�t get this working
on my own.


I�ve got a small network going at home with 2 linux RH5.2 machines,
and one of them is used to dial my isp. That works just fine, I can
connect to internet from my dialup machine and the speed is
to my satisfaction (V.90, 48-50kb connects).

The problem is: when I dial in to my "dialup machine" running mgetty
with my Win95 laptop it connects alright and the logfile tells
me it�s an 28k8/ARQ/V34... connection.
But my ftp/http transfers over my dialup are so slow.
About 0.1k/s.
The serial speed is set to 115200

I haven�t got a clue.
Has anyone run into this problem before?

It would also be great if you could CC the answer to me.

I setup a internal DNS for company use and it can resolve external
address as well.  I can't find what is the meaning of the log file in
the man page or in the book.

Serial driver version 4.13 with no serial options enabled

but no ports, i have read the serial howto and 2 linux book and they all say
that if i dont see

tty0 at 0x3f8 (irq=4) is a 16550a
tty03 bla bla bla

to make sure that serial support is enabeld in the kernel , i cant kernelcfg
cuz i am missing a file, i dont know if that is where i need to be.

Does anybody know how to enable logging for IPMasquerade. IPFWADM seems
to have an option that does not work under IPmasq and I know I included
every option practically except tunneling building my kernel. I get the
feeling that wrappers may have to be included but I'm not sure how to
implement them. Any suggestions of docs that I can look at or
engineering procedures are appreciated. Right now I can not tell where
anyone is going. For my applications & users the security is not a
problem but I want to be able to log for business use in the future and
would like to practice now.

I am trying to install Redhat Linux 5.2 onto my system via FTP since I
am sick and tired of buying Linux by the time a new version always
comes out. Besides, I don't have anymore hard drive space although I
formated a hard drive for RH linux. I am using an SMC PCI 10 Ethernet
card and I have a direct connection via Cox@home. I downloaded both
the supp and boot images and placed them to two floppies, booted via
my floppy, chose FTP as installation option, inserted supp disk, and
then I had no problem choosing NE2000 PCI. However, when I got to the
autoprobing option, I got that annoying and irritating error message
saying "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource Temporarily Unavailable." Anybody got a
solution to this error message?

big. I had to use 'make bzImage' to build my current kernel. I also

You were right!! - It was NT's fault (who would have guessed it :-)

I had given the NT machine two IP addresses and two default gateways (yes,
NT lets you have two default gateways, I know it doesn't make sense).  Its
IP address and gateway on my work network are
203.25.143.101/203.25.143.100 and on my home network they are
203.56.15.27/203.25.143.130 (yes 203.25.143.0 is subnetted).  My Linux box
has an IP address of 203.25.143.130 (the second default gateway for the NT
machine).

Based on all that, the routing table on NT looked like this:

Now unless I am reading that routing table wrongly, NT should have known
to get to my Linux box (203.25.143.130) through its ethernet interface
(which NT refers to as 203.25.143.101, although that is not actually the
correct IP address on the home network).  However it did not do so, UNTIL
I added the following additional route:

   203.25.143.130  255.255.255.255   203.25.143.101   203.25.143.101

Yep, although the entire 203.25.143.0 network was supposed to be routed
through its ethernet interface, it wouldn't work until I added a specific
static route for 203.25.143.130.  It makes no sense to me, but at least it
is now working.

I have yet to get the Linux machine working properly as a gateway for the
NT, but at least now I can communicate between the two machines, which is
90% of the battle.  I think I can figure out the rest of it myself.

There should be a DOS utility on the driver disk that came with the card that can
do this for you,,boot to dos and run the utility and set the settings there,,,as to
the media type you will have to set it for either 10 or 100 or I think you can set
that one for autosense with no problems,,
as to taking values that windoze likes,,,all you have to do is go into windows,,go
into device mangler and read the values that it is reporting the card as using then
"hard set" the card for that and tell bios taht the pci slot the card is in is no
longer controlled by plug and pray! :)

however be warned that it may still not work,,3Com recently changed that card.
thus the 3C905 TX and 3C905bTX  the driver for the b revision will work on the 905
revision but not visa versa,,,the windows 3.01 driver will ruin any 905 but the
2.12. will only run the older card and as far as I know there is no revised driver
available for Linux YET! :)

According to NET-3-HOWTO,  /etc/init.d/boot is somewhat linux equivalent to

One way to set up separate accounts is, e.g.,

ppp1:frLFdAHFr8mYQ:601:100:ppp1 account:/tmp:/usr/local/etc/ppp1 

in /etc/passwd, where /etc/ppp/users/ppp1 is a script such as

#!/bin/sh
# Script for client ppp1
        exec /usr/local/etc/pppd proxyarp crtscts asyncmap 0 /dev/modem \
        Host_IP:Client_IP


Another way might be get the users to start ppp on the host directly
as a part of the shell account login - assuming that the host machine
has ppp available - with a script executed on the client machine such as

#!/bin/sh

/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem 38400 debug crtscts modem asyncmap 00000000 \
defaultroute Client_IP: connect 'sleep 1 && \
/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /root/.ppp1-chat && sleep 3'

where ~/.ppp1-chat on the client machine is something like

ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
"" ATZ
OK\r ATDTxxx-xxxx\r\c
CONNECT\s \K
TIMEOUT 15
ogin:--ogin: UserName

This once worked for me, YMMV.
