Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think that older versions of SAMBA
did not support encrypted passwords and also that older versions of 95
did support plain text passwords. I recently discovered that my newer USB
version of Windows 95 could no longer communicate with my SAMBA on RH4.2,
after some reading I tried to setup SAMBA on my RH5.2 with the newer
version of SAMBA that supported encryption. My new 95/USB(w/encrypted
only I believe), now communicates with SAMBA on 5.2. Though I don't run
98 I suspect that the commuunication problem with samba may be due to
that. I am now looking into updating SAMBA for RH4.2. I did not edit the
regisrty like the other solution offered but that sounds like a neat
trick if you want to take the security risk. So like I said I may be
wrong but to the best of my knowledge I think that 98 and newer 95's like
USB version support only encrypted passwords. I also suspect that you may
be running older 95's and that is the only reason you can still login to
SAMBA. Try it with a USB version 95 , I'll bet you have problems there
like with 98. I don't think I even had to touch the smb.conf in the
version that came with RH5.2

So update SAMBA if you can!

Hope that helps.

Subject: Routing & IP Masq -help!!
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 03:06:17 GMT

Hi!

I'm setting up IP Masquerading and I'm almost done. Unfortunately, my
Win98 machine cannot send packets through gateway yet and I can't seem
to be able to find the problem, but I think it is related to routing.
Here are some configuration details:

eth0 connected to cable modem (on outside ip addr - 24.3.42.203)
eth1 connected to local lan (192.168.1.1)

routes summary:
Destination Mask Dev
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 eth1
24.3.42.0 255.255.255.0 eth0
and loopback, etc.

ipfwadm -F -l returns:
IP firewall forward rules, default policy: deny
type prot source destination ports
acc/m all 192.168.1.0/24 anywhere n/a

tcpdump -i eth1 shows packets arriving and dns translation being
performed for, i.e. ftp requests from my client. However, tcpdump -i
eth0 shows no activity beyond normal requests by ISP's gateway.

Any help is greatly appreciated, even if you can suggest another way to
debug this problem.

Thanks a lot!

Boris

This is a bad idea !

If you want to stop ICMP pings requests (type 8) then use a rule like...

ipfwadm -I -o -a deny -P icmp -S 0.0.0.0/0 8 -D your.inet.ad

Note how '8' is specified on the source address, this will block incoming
pings, whilst still allowing other ICMP types to function OK.

Hope that helps.

Are your 2 computers on the same subnet? 192.168.9.x and 192.168.9.x?

You shouldn't even need a route to ping eachother. You probably only need
one if you are directly connected to the internet just to access the
internet or to use the server as a gateway for the other box. If your
connected to the net using pppupd, diald pppd etc those automatically
setup the defaultroute anyways when configured. Anyways

route -n

will show you all your routes and help you debug any routes you added if
you need them for direct connect to the internet or other intranets with
different subnets & masks etc.

Hope that helps!

Most mother boards (at least the one I have and my friends have that I
have worked on) have an option in bios to give an irq to the video card
or not. I would make it so it doesn't give an irq to the video card and
then try it. I know on some motherboard their plug'n'play support has a
slightly problem where it has a tendency to assign irq's to two devices
at once. My spacewalker shuttle board was like that until I flashed the
bios and installed the irq patch for windows95. If your problem goes
away I would remove the network card and video. Remove them from
windows95 and add them one by one. They should get an irq of their own
then. See if this helps.

Figured them out myself. While I am going to write a paper on this subject
and publish it for the Linux community, here's what I did to get everything
working in the meantime....

1) Read and followed Josh Gentry's paper setting up a dialin account using
mgetty.

2) Edited my /etc/options file to read:
    asynchmap 0
    proxyarp
    crtscts
    modem
    lock

3) Edited my /etc/options.ttyS0 file to read:
192.168.0.2:192.168.0.3 # first IP is the
server's IP, the second is the assigned
     auth #
require peer to authenticate
     login #
validate user against entries in /etc/passwd
netmask 255.255.255.0 # setup my net mask
     require-pap # tell pppd
that PAP is required to login.

4) Using linuxconf, create a new pppuser account for your dialin account.
Have the login shell be /etc/ppp/ppplogin.

5) Now, edit your /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file and create the following entry:
    <username> * <password> *

Substitute your username and password as applicable.

6) If you are using a Win95 PC as the client (as I am), setup your DUN
account with the following options:
    Advanced Settings:
      Log onto network: Yes
      Enable Software Compression: Yes
      Require Encrypted Password: No

    Allowed Network Protocols:
Set as needed for your system. In mine, I set only TCP/IP.

Under TCP/IP Settings, let the server assign both the IP address and
Gateway.

That's all there is to it.

Enjoy!

Subject: Domain POP?
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 05:58:44 +0000

Hi all,

Well, things are going somewhat smoothly now that I've re-installed
Linux (after a 1+ year absence to the dark side). I have one question
though: What is the best way to get DomainPOP working? Right now I
have a domain registered at a local ISP and all mail to isolation.net
gets sent to that ISP. I then log in as myself and any emails sent to
isolation.net are in that one mailbox. The problem is, I've got several
people here in my house that use isolation.net as their email address
and would like to then access their mail via POP3/Win clients. Now, I
have no problem with the internal (to the house) POP3 stuff, what I'm
interested in is the best way to get that email from my ISP (must be via
POP3) and then parse it out to the correct mailbox here. I was thinking
of using fetchmail and deliver to handle all of that, but is this the
easiest way to go? I have a cable modem connection and an ethernet lan
in the house (if any of you are interested in the internal networkings
here).

If there are any other suggestions or support for fetchmail/deliver I'd
be very happy to hear them.

Thanks!

I have not played with dual boot much but I will assume that you could lets say
fdisk 1/2 your drive with Back Office(The first 1/2 from block/sector 0) and let
linux fdisk the second half with root & swap. Then boot Linux when you need
from floppy. I'm sure there is a way to do it with dual boot but that is a quick
fix for you anyways for now. RH may recognize the first partition as being a DOS
boot anyways if you partitioned like that but I'm not sure.

Hope that helps for now.

XYPLEX 1620 connected to RH4.2 and run Kerberos5 on linux for
authentication.

You can connect anything from a dumb terminal to a CRAY to a Linux box.
There are very few things that you can't do and for those things that
you can't there's always sourcecode.

Look at Wine for linux for windows emulator. The above question is
confusing me a little about 98.

You may want to look at SAMBA to network the 386's to Linux via ethernet
so you don't have to u6se rs232.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Multiple Ethernet Setup on Sparc with redhat 5.1
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 15:03:20 +0530

Dear Linux Gurus,
I have loaded RedHat Linux 5.1 on my SPARCServer 20, which has two ethernet
interfaces. When I test from NVRAM, I find both interfaces to be active. The
address showed in the NVRAM are :
iommu@f,e0000000/Sbus@f,e0001000/lebuffer@3,40000/le@3,60000 for one
interface, and
iommu@f,e0000000/Sbus@f,e0001000/ledma@f,400010/le@3,C00000 for the other
interface
It seems One interface is onboard and the other on a SBUS combo SCSI+ENET
card.
I am unable to activate both the interfaces. I do not even know the name of
the interfaces to write them in "conf.module". Any help will be highly
appreciated. The Redhat official Support was not of any help.
Pl. cc any response to my email address.
Mahendra

Few possible reasons..

(1) Serial support not compiled into kernel:
change to /usr/src/linux and then run 'make xconfig' to run the
configuration out of an X window, or 'make menuconfig' to run it out
of the console. Enable your serial options if not enabled and
    re-compile according to Redhat's instructions.

(2) Serial ports not enabled in BIOS. Check to see that any serial ports
you intend on using are enabled.

(3) You have a plug and play modem. If this is the case you will need
to use the isapnp tools. If this is the case, having it not detect
the serial devices is normal during bootup, but they will be detected
    after running isapnp.

Subject: Firewall logging & general security

I'm looking for some way to monitor system log entries (especially
firewall rejections/denials and connects to in.telnetd, etc.)
on-the-fly, and to watch for portscans and repeated attempts to access
restricted ports. An added bonus would be the ability to grab the
sysadmin's attention somehow and/or deal with the problem
independently -- for example, inserting new firewall rules to try to
fend off a particular host or network if repeated cracking attempts
appear to be being made from them.

Does anyone know of any software out there that even *remotely* fits
these criteria? I'm thinking of designing something myself, but I
don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to. Even something
already-coded that only does one or two of the above could help me.
