So, this is a configuration problem between your non-relaying MTA and
your MUA. Is your MTA setup to allow e-mails from your site? If it
does not recognize you then it could simply be a configuration problem
with your MUA. Have you checked the Tools -> Options settings carefully?
Also, if the MUA's configs are fine, you might want to ask your e-mail
admin to allow e-mail from:
1. Your IP address if you have a static IP address.
2. Your domain name if you have a dymanically assigned IP address.
Enjoy!

A bit of help please.
I am trying to setup DNS on my brand new RH5.2 box. I cannot seem to
find documentation regarding the interaction between the /etc/hosts
system and the /var/named system.
It has been several years since I last worked with these systems (on SCO
OpenServer). But I seem to remember that you had to remove or disable
/etc/hosts in order to have the DNS system used. It now looks like a
/etc/host.conf file controls the order that hosts and bind are used.
However, so long as there is a /etc/host file at all, ping seems to
insist that all pingable hosts be listed there, regardless of the DNS
tables.
I looked through the BOG related documentation from www.isc.org with no
success. So, where is the documentation on /etc/host.conf and the
interaction between hosts and Bind? Any quick pointers on what to do
would also be appreciated.
TIA,
Gerald

I telnet into my linux box from my win9x box to do most of my work at home, and lately
I've been
having a problem with telnet sessions dying for no reason. I also have many mp3s on my
Linux
box, shared out with Samba. When I try to play these, I usually get between half a
song and two
songs before they cut out. I upgraded Samba, but that didn't seem to help. I've also
tried a
different Windows machine on the network, and different telnet clients, but the same
thing
happens. I've checked my logs, but I don't see anything that gives me a clue what
might be going
on.
FWIW, I'm running the 2.0.36 kernel with ip_masq, etc built in, on a Slackware
distribution
that's about 1 year old. If I can't figure out what's going on, I'm going to reinstall
with a
new distribution--but I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

Sounds like a winroute or browser problem. All adresses are mapped to
206.etc.
Is there a configuration for a LAT (Local Adress Table) like other proxies
have. An entry in your browser like don`t use 192.168.1 for proxy?

The short answer is, yes, you can use it. But... here is my story:
The "modem" isn't the problem, because it's actually a router with its
own mini Unix-like OS. Basically it is telephone wire in, Ethernet out
(twisted pair if I have my terminology straight--the RJ45 jack). So your PC
will never interact with it directly. The problem is the NIC they bundle
with it, if you opt for the PCI card, the 3Com 905B. I just tried to set
this up on my computer, and ran into some problems, so I checked here, and
one of the first messages I encountered was a discussion about the fact that
it isn't supported.
If you already have an NIC (and it sounds like you do) or don't mind
purchasing an additional one, the service itself is *great*. Even though I
opted for only 256Kbs, I find that I occasionally get over 680 Kbs--that's
one megabyte in 15 seconds.

If yes: The easiest way is to ask your ISP for an MX entry (Mailexchange) in
his nameserver pointing to your server and let sendmail to the rest (with
your popservice to move mail entries from /var/spool/mail like now)
Hope it helps

OK. First of all, you have got masquerading working, so that part is
right.
Whats happening is you are not getting a (valid?) IP from your DHCP
server.
HAve you allowed DHCP to pass through the firewall?
When you Set up masquerading you usually use ipfwadm to
1. Deny all packets
2. Masquerade for packets coming from your internal machines.
In your case, when you set up DHCP, you would have had to add in a
couple of ipfwadm statements, to allow the DHCP services to receive/send
their designated packets off the network. I can't tell you those
commands off the top my head - maybe someone else can.
Or maybe you can do some homework :)

I want to set up a special server on the Macintosh , so every packet needs

Hi all,
I have a problem using dhclient on Linux (SuSE 5.3 -- 2.0.35 kernel, HP
Omnibook 3100 with 3Com Etherlink III PCMCIA adapter (562D / 563D).
My network card and modem both work fine (when I assign a fixed address to
eth0). But when I run 'dhclient eth0' I get the response 'DHCPOFFER a.b.c.d
is not satisfactory'. I can't find any inhibitions in either
/etc/dhclient.conf or /sbin/dhclient-script that should suggest this
behavior (investigation using 'strings dhclient' shows that the message
stems from the executable).
Does anyone have any suggestions?

That's RedHat only, as far as I knowm tho. Slackware has it enabled by

Anyway, I solved the problem, somehow by having masq rules for every
comp in the localnet, instead of for the whole localnet at once.
Very weird, but it worked :)

you need to use the passive mode on the ftp clients. because normally the
file list is sent through a connection initiated by the server to your
IP, which is the computer that does the masquerading, and that linux box
doesn't know how to handle that. Passive mode force the client to make
every necessary connection.

that probably works (I don't have a 10.x system - nor a 9.x system any

I have a similar problem:
Running Red Hat Linux 5.2 x86, Apache 1.3.3. as development LOCALHOST server.
Modem only. No ethernet adaptor. ppp is set up to contact ISP via modem and
works fine
Apache compiles without errors, ./apachectl start gives 'httpd started'
message, then it just dissapears. (' ps' shows no htttpd process running and
lynx can't open 127.0.0.1.
multiple htttpd.lock files show up in /var/run,
error_log says 'pid file overwritten, unclean shutdown of apache'.
ifconfig and netstat -i show localhost loopback running without errors
hosts file shows 127.0.0.1 localhost
Why would httpd start and bail out immediately? Might it have to do with Linux
needing to be configured differently for localhost operation?
please copy me directly if you post an answer

The weakness of the netscape email client both in Win95 and in Linux is that
it only supports one pop account (I'm assume that by multiple accounts, you
mean multiple pop accounts). KMail, the email client with the KDE desktop,
can support multiple pop accounts. I'm checking four with it every day. If
you don't want to use KDE, you can still install use KMail with other

Which kernel do you run? I have the same problem as Scott, but only

This is not a requirement in Linux though. You can make an entry in
/etc/resolv.conf in order to set the order in which the name lookup is
performed. e.g. if your resolv.conf has "bind hosts" the system will query
DNS first and then /etc/hosts.

Why use ippp1, shouldn't it be ippp0 ?
And why is that device on a *.*.0.* network when the others
are on a *.*.99.* network ? I ask because you might have valid
reasons but the way you have it only makes it harder unless
there is something else we don't know about your net config.

Assuming all your internal hosts are on a 192.168.99.0 network
and depending which kernel. Below will work on a 2.1.* or 2.2.*
kernel so just subtract "-wrapper" for 2.0.* kernels. If this
works for you then embed it into some startup script.

localhost, ping works as well. Ifconfig and route and netstat all show correct
values. Yet, apache just starts, and goes away immediately. I can't find an
error message anywhere to tell me why it doesn't stay alive. Once (out of many
many tries) I did get a
shared memory segment #2944, but I don't know why.

Subject: Loading modules at bootup
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 05:04:02 -0500
I've installed an Ethernet card and need to load ne.o for it to work on my
Caldera OL 1.3 puter.
Ehternet Howto talks about modifying "/etc/conf.modules", which was missing
in the first place. I created the file and entered the alias+parameters, but
nothing seems to happen at the bootup. As far as I understand, smth needs to
call "modprobe" command. What other file(s) do I need to modify for that?
The Howto sais nothing about it. 8(
OTOH, "Running Linux" shows that I can "insmod ne.o io=0x300 irq=5", and
this works fine. The book also ommits how I can have this command run at
bootup. :(
I tried specifying "ether=etc..." command on bootup, but that didn't seem to
be of any use.
Please tell me what am I missing? It's probably just a line in some
script... :[
TIA
A.G.

I tried 2.0.36 on an AXP (noname) had the same problems as mentioned above. I
guess it is an ALPHA specific problem. Firewalling and masquerading included
in the kernel. 'ipfwadm -F - p deny' works ok 'ipfwadm -F -a m -S
192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 ' ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: invalid argument
Anyone?
