The SMC PCI card that @home distributes is I believe a DEC chip. It uses
the tulip.o driver.

3com cards have a setup disk that allow you to change the settings of
the card. I have setup 3C509b at work, the program is on the
driver/setup disk. This card has a BNC, AUI and RJ45 connection. The
setup disk can allow you to select which one of those ports is used and
what IRQ / port to use as well. The newer cards are able to run 100mbs
which the BNC/AUI cable can't handle so they have RJ45 connecters only.
You can still setup the card for what irq and network speed. If you
don't have the disk you can download it from
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/index.htm
and chose which card you have.

Subject: 3c905B running DHCP in Red Hat 5.1
Date: 29 Dec 1998 15:17:42 GMT

Hi,

I am trying to bring my 3com 3c905B ethernet card up to run
with DHCP in Red Hat 5.1. However, in /var/log/messages, I
am seeing an entry by the dhcp client daemon saying "no
DHCPOFFER messages".

I then turned on the debugging option on the driver,
the following fhowed up after I typed dmesg.

Can anyone help me debug this? It seems like the driver
is trying to send packets, but after a number of tries,
it sets the card to promiscuous mode and then it seems
like the driver just went down w/ all the packets still
in its transmit queue.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Winston

You should probbly review what your current needs are and then configure
the box accordingly. The standard procedure is to disable all unused
serices - rip them out of inetd.conf and ensure that the startup scripts
for unecessary services are disabled as well. You said that you wanted
to telnet and ftp - I would ditch telnet alltogether as well as ftp (if
possible), and simply install secure shell which can do both secure
login / interactive sessions and secure file transfers (but not 'ftp').
I would also ditch sendmail if that's what you'll be using as your MTA
and install qmail instead - http://www.qmail.org

Subject: fetchmail/sendmail problem

I am trying to configure fetchmail to download my mail from my isp via
modem and put it into my mailbox. As I understand it, after fetchmail
downloads the mail, it invokes sendmail to send it to my local mailbox.
I'm at the point where fetchmail can pull the mail, but sendmail is having
trouble doing its job.

I get the following error in my /var/log/syslog:

SYSERR(bin): Cannot exec /bin/mail.local: No such file or directory

Am I missing this file or is sendmail looking for the wrong file? BTW,
while testing this out, fetchmail downloaded two messages, the system
error above was written twice to the syslog, and the mail appears to have
been lost.

Thanks for any help.

hello.

I do have a rather simple question:

since I am trying to put up a linux box for our LAN serving as gateway
and email-server, I have reached the level of thinking about security
issues. Sadly I have yet not found enough documentation about security
issues for putting up a server. My question is:

where can I find documents covering this topic (man pages, infos,
howtos, URLs, etc.).

thanks for your time and patience with me,

Hello Jack,

Actually it is quite simple really... Fire up Linuxconf, or from X11
click on Control Panel, Networking and give your machine a name, domain
name, and IP address and you should be all set...

Not by default, no. You should, however, have a module entitled
ip_masq_ftp (among others, such as ip_masq_irc and ip_masq_quake) that
can be manually inserted, and will work to allow standard FTP usage.
Try '/sbin/modprobe -l ip_masq_*' for a list.

I've looked at my logs, and dmesg, but nothing gives me a clue. Good idea on checking
errors,
but they're at 0, and there are even only 85 collisions out of ~ 3 million packets
TX/RX.
I tend to think it's at least partially Windows' fault. I wish I had another Linux box
I could
put in the network to talk to the original one.

sometimes it doesn't. i know it's going to connect if i click toggle
the modem interface (in usernet) and it dials right away. if it waits
a while (about 30 seconds) i know it's not going to connect.
when it doesn't connect it dials and then you hear the sounds of the
modem connecting and then it goest silent. if i pick up the phone it
is still trying to negotiate a connection.
i have not set up a ppp-on or off script because i was using the
configuration tools that seemed to do just fine.
i'm assuming that i should create those files and use that to connect.
well, i have a couple of different scripts i can use. if i put them
in the proper directories then all i need to do to get the modem to
dial is (in a command shell) type "ppp-on"? then to get it to
disconnect i type "ppp-off"?

am i way off? what could be causing the former problem? if anyone
can help i'd appreciate it.

thanks a bunch.

So how do I get it working? The RH manual, which I borrowed, won't
tell me that. All it says is that if your ethernet card is PCI, you
will have to change your PCI bios to get it working correctly
