The only other thing that would be useful would be if you could use 'tcpdump' to
capture your loal
traffic and review it to discover what the protocols are doing (Probbly a daunting
task for many
people). Another possibillity, and one that is ugly, are your deamons dying for non
networking
reasons? sig11/segfaulting? If you are on your server machine and you do 'updatedb'
followed by 'locate
core', do you see any core files (and not a directory named core, which is part of the
linux source
code hirearchy)?

DNS and BIND that has that information,,unfortunatly I lent my copy to a

the "order" in which requests are processed,,,"NIS DNS YPSERV" etc........

In my experience ethernet hardware drivers do not work well as modules, compile
it into the kernel.

Not sure, but I initially had problems with my 905B on both RH 5.1 and RH
5.2... Again, still not sure what is causing those problems, but I have got
around them by building a kernel with the 3c905 (Vortex/Boomerang) driver
configured to be compiled-in to the kernel rather than built as a loadable
module, which is the default.
It has worked flawlessly since.
Oh, and the symptoms were as you describe. (Actually, "network unreachable"
messages when you try to do anything on the wire, which makes sense, since the
problem, whatever it is, is resulting in the interface not being correctly
configured via "ifconfig".)

I have a linux server set up as a mail server. It also has Apache and
it has a network printer attached.
My problem is in the address required to send and receive mail. If I
send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] the mail is sent without a hitch.
But, if I address it to user@domainname it is not sent.
NSLookup sees everything you, < I >, would expect to so I'm wondering

A hint about mail2news gateways: If you have a recent INN, you may want to
review the filtering rules if you use a mail2news gateway. After upgrading
from inn 1.6 to 1.7 (redhat 5.0->5.2), inn comes with a perl filter called
cleanfeed that is usually too strict for a mail2news gateway.
I'm using an old perl script called mail2news. It's small and easyly
understandable so I can modify it when I want (threading support,
mime support, multiline headers, maybe something else).

Are you interconnecting at a switch or a hub, and are you getting 'full
duplex' or 'half duplex'? I have had the duplicate packet problem
although it's went away and I never did find out why it happened at all
in the first place, and it did involve a tulip driven card (netgear).
The collision light definately sounds like full duplex something is on
the same ethernet segment as the machine reporting the collisions. I had
that happen once and never did find the culprit, although it didn't hurt
the machine either. Strange.

seems to have started when I installed Caldera v1.3 - I wasn't getting

Anyway, I don't need IPX and don't recall asking for it either. How can

Many smaller ISPs can get away with ISDN router plus proxy, web & mail, and
dialin servers.

Not too bad with any Pentium class machine with _lots_ of RAM (e.g. 128MB)
and fast/large hard drives. Oh, BTW, use Linux/Squid as the OS of choice
here. This machine then becomes a bit like Novell's border manager (yes, if
you get Caldera's Open Linux you can have internal Novell servers and user
manage proxy via NDS).

You could also have all dialins coming into the proxy machine, if you liked.
All a Pentium class machine needs is a Multi-IO card like those from
Stallion Technologies. These give you plenty of serial ports into one PCI
bus slot. If you only envisage a reasonably fixed number of dialins then by
putting them into the proxy/gateway, they get good response and a good share
of the available bandwidth. If you think that the user base may grow to ?
high, and your internal PC workstation might like to hog more the bandwidth
at times, then a separate machine for dialin would be better. In this case,
depending on how many modems you _really_ need to have at any one time, a
DX4-100 with 32MB RAM may even suffice.
As for the web & mail server, if you are not going to have millions of hits
a day on your home pages or have _major_ mailing lists hosted there, then
you can definitely use a good 486 (DX2 or 4) with 32MB RAM and as much disk
space as you want. I use a DX4-100 with 32MB and about 3.5GB of EIDE (2
drives). It has an ordinary LAN card in it, and is connected to the net via
an Ascend Pipeline router with firewall software and then to a 64KB ISDN
connection. This seems to be going fine (check it out at
http://www.gmcs.com.au) and uses Redhat Linux 5.1 (with extra security
patches), Apache 1.3 web server, Qmail 1.x SMTP server, POP server, primary
DNS server, wu-ftp server.
BTW, you don't need (and probably don't want) your own news server. Why?
Because these servers usually use push technology from the upstream server.
This puts plenty of download traffic on your ISDN line so if you have to pay
for download (perhaps, like I have to after 100MB per month) then this can
get expensive. Alternatively, you just set a CNAME in the primary DNS for
your domain that points news.yrdomain.domain at the news server of your
access provider. Then point your client software at news.yourdomain.domain
and you only suck up the articles you are interested in.
Hope this gets you going.

Upgrade to Red Hat 5.2... that fixed it for me.

Subject: Want to do direct install of Redhat 5.2 via FTP since I have Cox@home but am
stuck in the DUNGEONS OF DOOM !!! SO HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP !!!
Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 02:33:19 GMT
Hi. i do apologize if my message sounds a bit too long but at least
you all will be able to figure out the sticky problem I'm stuck with
and may even know how to help me out of it. I currently am running
Windows 98 on one hard disk. However, since it is 7.5 GB and it's
32-bit, Linux won't recognize it when I first install Linux. At least
that's what I have been told and eventually found out. Besides, sure I
can download 500 MB in 2 hrs without any trouble via my cable modem,
but I would still need to copy it to a CD-R or CD-RW disc or something
and I'm not gonna pay $200 - $400 for CD-R/RW (in case you all wanted
to know why I would not prefer to copy to a storage device and then
install). I'm not sure if Linux will do it off my zip disks if I copy
linux to 6 zip discs. In any case, these wonderful people keep on
changing the versions of RH Linux. Therefore having got fed up with
it, I looked in the book which talked about RH Linux and how to
install. Well, I had versions 3 and 4 of RH but since some of my
crucial hardware at that time could not be recognized I abandoned RH
until I finally found out that if I had a direct connection with
Cox@home just like corporations and universities that have a direct
connection with their T1, T3, OC-3, etc... server, then you don't even
have to download RH linux. All you really have to download are the
boot.img and supp.img files and transfer them to two blank but
formatted 3.5" high density disks. So I did just that and booted up my
machine and when I got to the installation method option, I chose ftp
method. When I got to the ethernet card question, I 3c509 driver. By
the way, I still have the 3c509b PnP 16-bit Ethernet adaptor which I
obtained when I used to attend another university. Rather than sell
it, I kept it for something like a cable modem. In fact that same
ethernet card I had was part of the requirements for my cable modem
installation. Anyway, RH Linux never in the past had any trouble
recognizing my ethernet card. The only trouble was recognizing my
video cards,my parallel port zip drive, and my higher capacity hard
drive. here, in 5.2 that was not the problem. however, when I got to
the options of DHCP, BOOTP, and Static Address, I chose the Static
option and filled in my fields correctly. However, I got an error
message saying unable to connect to host. I fully verified the ftp
site address and typed it correctly. So I then went back and tried the
other two options only to get the "no response" error message from
bootp and dhcp. So the question still remains, isn't it possible to
install via ftp with cox@home and if so, how and what configurations
are to be made during installation?
Please post a reply to this message. I've had to switch ISPs in the
past due to people spamming and framing my acount(s).
