Hello,

Running Linux 2.1.132, ppp2.3.3, with ppp support compiled as a module.

I am having trouble configuring PPP so that it works. Right now I am trying
to establish a manual connection (i.e., trying to connect through minicom,
quitting without resetting the modem and running pppd). I first ran into a
problem where ppp compress/decompress are not being loaded when needed.

If you have an available serial port on each machine, pick up a null
modem cable. Pick a class C (private) network address for each
machine -- say 192.168.1.3 & 192.168.1.4. The very last page of the
ppp howto shows the pppd command that needs to be executed on each
machine to initiate the linkup. You can then ftp, telnet, etc at
will between the two machines -- as long as those services are
enabled.

If one of the machines is connected to the Internet, you can install
IP Masquerade (see the mini howto) and use internet resources on
either machine. A serial link is slow, but it is useful and makes for
a good simple learning experiment.

Hope that leads you down a good path.

Nowadays most of the budget type hi-speed modems are WinModems. They use a
piece of Windows. They will not work under plain dos or other OS than Win...
You can test this by rebooting the pc in MS-DOS mode and try a DOS
communicationprogram like Telix or Procomm. It they can access the modem (in
plain dos not in a dos box) they should work using Linux. At least that's my
experience

Subject: Suck/INN Configuration Problem
Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 08:25:21 GMT

I'm running Debian 2.0 and am using suck/inn to pull a small newsfeed from my
ISP's news server. Fetching articles works fine, posting doesn't.

If I don't include a line in /etc/news/newsfeeds for my remote ISP, nothing
gets posted remotely. If I do include a line in newsfeeds, everything that
gets fetched by suck is reposted by rpost (called from
/usr/sbin/get-news.inn) back to my ISP resulting in my ISP's news server
rejecting them as duplicates.

How do I get inn to stop putting references to every article it receives from
suck (via innxmit) in /var/spool/news/out.going so that rpost won't try to
post it back to my ISP?

Obviously, attempting to repost every article I receive isn't going to make me
any friends at my ISP!

Here's the line from /etc/news/newsfeeds:

news.myisp.com:*,!control,!junk,!local.*/!local::

Any help will be appreciated.

Ok, this is really odd. I have all of the sudden acquired an
intermittent connection while in my Linux partition. I can always ping
the network IP, but not the primary nameserver. After first setting up
the static IP it worked fine, and it continuously works fine in my Win
partition. It has suddenly begun to work on several occasions, but
usually fails after reboot, or just lags me off. When it does manage to
work it is very slow and has a high packet loss. at one point I reset
the modem and it worked. I tried it another time and it did not. At one
point I tried to ping the the primary nameserver and it did not work, I
tried the secondary nameserver and that got through. I then tried the
primary again and that worked. I had made no changes between tries, in
fact, they were done consecutively. If anyone has any ideas or
suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

I use a program called taper to do my backups, both interactive and
unattended via cron. It has a nice text interface and is simplicity
itself to set up to be run unattended.

You can get the latest version from http://www.omen.net.au/~yusuf
which is the home site of the creator. RPM's for Red Hat can be found
at most of the package repositories.

I take it that you have a non-switching, auto-sense hub and the
rest of your net is still 10BT.

Is there a MSDOS setup program w/ the Pro100? It may provide the
means for forcing 10BT.

You need to use the softset.exe program on the drivers diskette
that came with the EE16 (probably available at Intel WWW) to set
the specific IO and IRQ settings. The 509 using 300/10 doesn't
mean that it picked it up from the 'slot'.

That doesn't do the same thing as noccp. That just disables Vern's BSD

Yep; or recompile with CCP deliberately commented out.
