I have set up a small LAN at home. I used an UTP cable with rj45
connectors connected to an * port hub (10baseT). One box is running
Linux Redhat 5.1 and another Windows 98. My problem is:
I can't ping the Linux box from the Windows 98 box but i can ping from
my Linux box to my Windows 98 box.
Does anyone know whats the problem?????Oh yeah, when i try to run
winipcfg on my Windows 98 box it says can't read IP headers error.
Do u think it's got something to do with my UTP cabling cause I did the
cabling myself or is it just some misconfiguration on the Windows 98
box.
Lastly, the ironic thing is that, I have managed to get samba working.
Therefore, windows 98 box can access Linux partition. what's going on
here?????????????
Please help. Thanks

Basically you can use Samba as a BDC on your NT-site. It can route all logon
requests to a NT-PDC as you specify it in the conf-file smb.conf. If you
need more information write me and I'll look further into it.

I don't have a problem to use a PPP connection as a "root". I use
/etc/ppp/ppp-on and works fine.
But if I try to make a connection as a regular user, it gives me this
message:
"Sorry - this system lacks PPP kernel support"
And from /var/log/messages gives this message:
-localhost pppd[5266]:Can't create lock file /var/lock/LCK..modem:Permission
denied
-localhost pppd[5266]:exit
Any help on how to use a PPP connection as a regular user would be
appreciated!!

I'm really sorry you feel that way ... how do you deal with SPAM?
{Besides the later report that your FROM line doesn't work! :-) }
>From a personal experience the spam became very over-powering. When I
first got on the net (first ISP) I didn't take any precautions and I
rapidly became swamped by spam, 8+ pieces per day, some very large and
if I wasn't on each day to keep them cleaned up they were a pain.
Even after I started the NOSPAM thing it was too late, I was already
on mailing lists.
{Swamped is relative, but I regularly access my account via slow(er)
dialup connections and the SPAM is a real pain!}
A year ago my ISP went out of business and I was forced to change. I
maintained my NOSPAM policy and now I DO NOT GET SPAM! It does work.
I am still paying for my folly at work ... I post a little from there
and it hasn't changed in many years ... I get 10+ pieces per day ...
more on the weekends. It will be scary when I get back from a couple
weeks of vacation. I'll probably get some nasty notes from the
administrator about too many messages stored in my inbox.
Just one other point ... isn't it considered "anti-usenet" to reply by
email instead of posting to the group ... to assist others following
the thread?

Hello netters,
I have a HP LaserJet 3100 on my NT 4.0 machine. Based on my understanding,
the only way to print from Linux to NT is through samba. I have tried to
configure samba on both my Linux and NT boxes. I am able to use smbclient to
see my NT disks and printer. When I am in smb: \> prompt, I tried to issue
the "print" command directly but I got the error message on my NT said
"Error writing to HPLJ3100 for Document Remote Downlevel document. The data
is invalid"
I believe I have followed the instruction under my /usr/doc. Am I missing
something? Could some body show me some pointer?
Thanks for your time.

Just trying to get Samba set up on my little network at home. 2
Win95, 2 linux and 1 Warp4. I have Win95 working with both Samba and
the Warp4 box just fine, but I can't get the Warp4 box and Samba to
see each other. Warp4 is running netbios over TCPIP. The network is
fine, I can ping, FTP, etc, but no Samba. I've tried various forms of
'lm announce' to no avail. The system is running guest only and
security = share, so I don't think password case is the problem.
Has someone else been here before?

The naive answer is that pppd is not terminating correctly and that a
subsequent attempt to call out is blocked by the old pppd lock. The lock
file is in /var/spool/uucp here, the locking process pid is in this file.
I don't know why every other time works though.
Checking the file for the pid and doing "ps -auxw | grep <pid>" will
show you exactly what process is locking.

The samba-2.0 source provides an appropriate smbmount as well.
It also compiles cleanly on redhat 5.x systems. You have to
compile on a system with 2.1 kernel headers. Use
./configure --with-smbmount
to include the smbmount code.

edit the /etc/securetty file and add the following:
ttyp0
ttyp1
ttyp2
this will allow 3 root telnet logins at the same time..?good/bad..?
Check the /etc/ttys file and verify that there are entries :
vt100 ttyp0
vt100 ttyp1
vt100 ttyp2

Subject: Re: NETGEAR (tulip driver) problem
Date: 1 Jan 1999 18:19:32 GMT
>Hi, I have a NIC, netgear from baynetworks.
Howdy!
Newer versions of the Netgear adapter (4.x and older) require a special version
of the 'Tulip' driver. This new version comes with the Netgear adapter or from
Bay Networks' web site.
Go to their web site and download all the software for the adapter you have.
Unzip the file, and you'll find a file called 'tulip.c' in the LINUX directory.
Move the 'tulip.c' to /usr/src/linux/drivers/net
Open the tulip.c file with vi and go all the way to the bottom for instructions
on how to compile. If you do this manually, then the command line sequence you
want is:
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
-O6 -c tulip.c `[-f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`
Notice that this command line uses ` instead of '!
When done, you'll have a file called tulip.o in your current directory. Move
it to /lib/modules/linux-current-ver/net
In my system, linux-current-ver corresponds to 2.0.35-1
If the very last part of this process seems confusing and your system isn't
configured like mine and the 2.0.35-1 directory or whatever, run
locate tulip.o
And move the newly created tulip.o file to the directory where the old one
lives.
Happy New Year!
