I'm a newbie to Linux as well as to Networking.
Currently I'm trying to setup a linux server.
I've got a small intranet with ip's in the range 192.168.100.n.
the linux server has the ip 192.168.100.200.
then there is a router connected to the isp via leased line.
it has the ip 192.168.100.100. and does network adress translation.
i've configured it so that all incoming requests are redirected to the
server.
from another computer connected to the internet I can
telnet, smtp, http, ftp the server.
yet now that i want to setup a samba server i've discovered some weird things.
the server does not answer to ping requests, wether from outside nor from the
server itself.
i can't telnet from the server to the server.
when doing a telnet localhost I end up with a connection to the router.
I guess something is really wrong with my configuration.
Maybe someone could point me to some possible errors that I made.

Thank your help. But we can't add Samba as BDC in our site. In fact, we
don't want to make change to the server, and what I want to do is access the
NT volume so I can R/W to it, and access the Internet though MS Proxy
Server. Is there any suggestion?

anything outside the www.demon.nl network, I get an endless wait...
I can ping, ftp, traceroute, etc everyone, just http won't work...

site, netgear.baynetworks.com). I just re-installed slackware one of my
other machines that was using 2.0.29 and it now using 2.0.36. It
appears that the tulip.c in 2.0.36 version of the kernel works because I
didn't have to use the one from the driver disk.

Here is a patch for chap and chap man pages that allows manual entry
of a PIN and password. It is not mine and I haven't had occasion to
use it so I can't vouch for it but the code seems reasonable. The idea
could be warped into other types of manual entry that might be necessary.

Subject: chat modification for SecurID support
I have to use a SecurID "one time password" authenticator to connect to
my employer's network. Since the password changes every minute, I can't
put the password in a script or file. So, I have made a small change to
the chat program to allow the password to be typed in when requested.
The syntax is simply \P, which causes a password prompt to be issued to
the controlling terminal. I use this with the "updetach" option to pppd
to retain the terminal connection until chat completes. My employer's
system also requires a PIN; this is simply added to the \P. For
example, the expect/send string:
Password: 12345678\P
will send 12345678 concatinated with whatever password is typed in. I
have attached the patches to chat.c and chat.8. I'd like to request
that this change be made to the official source, as I imagine there are
other folks using SecurID authenticators who would benefit.

You could try:
(i) do "netstat -r" - the result should look something like:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1500 0 0 eth0
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 3584 0 0 lo
(the Destination on the second line should be the network address for
your local network, and there may be more lines if you have configured
routes to other networks).
If not, it needs fixing via control-panel and the network option.
(ii) failing that, monitor the link for a bit with "tcpdump -i eth0" and see
what turns up. You might have to install the tcpdump rpm if you haven't
already.

I am able to get port forwarding to work. However, I can only reach
my internal webserver using the real IP address. Is there a way to
have it resolve to a domain name? I have been working non-stop on
this and can't get it to work. I am on a cable modem using IP Masq
and wish to have my web server on the inside using a fake ip
(192.168.1.3). Please help

I have an internet provider which offers me Internet access only over a
proxy
server so I am behind a firewall. For my intranet I have my own proxy
server,
but all requests for outside I want to forward to the providers's proxy
server.
For this I am using squid-1.NOVM.21-6 with the following squid.conf:

But it doesn't work. Can somebody help? Please answer to

Yesterdat I have noticed something weired when installing linux as a
internet-gateway on a leases-line (RS232): Rip-packages jumping back and
forth on the PPP-link using port 520!
This happens at least every 5 seconds.
Since they do not exist on my private-account (modem) I was wondering how
they can prevent to exist, or at least banned to keep my demand-dialing
active!
I have tried to deny them by defining input-rules, but they keep coming
although having a complete block on the input-firewall of the ppp-interface.
This phenomonom is described in the 'active-filter'-part of the man-pages of
pppd-2.3.5.
And it's solution is not working for Linux, because this option only works
for NetBSD.
Any suggestions?
