Oops! I've corrected this - I hope.
My E-mail address was in my signature though:-)
Actually, I do not mind the single "NOSPAM" included in an otherwise
correct E-mail address.

I agree with this sentiment in general. I was primarily referring to
the " asked-a- thousand-times-before-question."
I quote from " A Primer on How to Work with the Usenet Community "
by Chuq Von Rospach, which, I believe, is posted by many ISP's on
their websites :
" One of the biggest problems we have on the network is that when someone
asks a question, many people send out identical answers...Mail your answer
to the person and suggest that they summarize to the network..."

The RH 5.2 kernelis compiled properly for ip-masq so you wont have to
recompile the kernel.

Subject: One Way Cable Modem Setup
Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 17:28:40 -0500
I need some help setting up a One Way Cable Modem with Redhat 5.2. I have
and generic 28.8 internal modem that is the outgoing data and a COM21 cable
modem for the incoming data connected via a hub to the server computer.
This works fine with WIN95/98. With Linux running I can PPP via the 28.8
just fine and the eth network works just fine to other computers via the
hub. IPmasq works just great to connect the network via a 2way PPP
connection to the ISP.
Somewhere I seem to need the connection (binding??) between the 28.8
outgoing and the cable modem incoming data. This in turn needs to get back
to the rest of the network either by some magic via the hub or more probably
via a second eth card (using IPmasq).
Thanks in advance

I also have had difficulties using PPP with Linux. I have tried Redhat 5.1,
Suse 5.32 and Slackware 3.3. with
the same amount of success, namely sporadic connection. I am now using Redhat
5.1 with Netscape 4.5 to
compose this mail which is a testament to perseverence. I have given up using
anything but the linuxconf
tool. which appears now to operate as expected. The problem I have encountered
appears to be due to
using the additional consoles tty2-3 etc. If you have any activity in these
consoles then there appears to
be a problem. Make sure that you only have one console active., ie the .inital
tty.
The problem apprears to be caused by one of the programs rewriting the host
name , to say ppp-999
which I assume is something to do with the dhcp. An active console seems to be
disturbed by this, and
no wonder. I've now sent away for the latest version of Redhat, which I hope
will solve the problems.

I have a RT328 I am not using it to connect to my ISDN to my network. I
would scrap the Netgear program and telnet in to the router. When you
telnet in you get a menu that is easier to use and doesn't crash like
their software does. I have called their tech support and they had me
use the telnet instead of the config program. I just telneted to my
router and saw these menu options (i don't have these configured because
I use it to dial out with, not to have someone dialin). 11. Remote Node
Setup 14. Dial-In user setup 15. SUA Server setup.
I'm sorry if you already new this, I haven't had a problem wit Netgears
support my self. I have all Netgear equipment here (NICs, hubs,
router).

That will only get run when a user logs in (and only then, if the

Well, I'm going to follow this up, even though I don't think anybody's
reading this thread. When I run fetchmail in verbose mode I get the
following error codes (my specific info goes in the angle brackets):
Enter password for <user@host>:
fetchmail: 4.4.4 querying <host> (protocol auto) at Fri Jan 1 16:57:07 1999
fetchmail: 4.4.4 querying <host> (protocol IMAP) at Fri Jan 1 16:57:07 1999

fetchmail: 4.4.4 querying <host> (protocol POP3) at Fri Jan 1 16:57:07 1999
fetchmail: pre-connection command failed with status 32512
fetchmail: post-connection command failed with status 32512
QUIT
fetchmail: SMTP> QUIT
fetchmail: normal termination, status 32512
Here's the command line:
fetchmail -k -m cat -p POP3 -v -u <user> -a <host>
Now I've searched the FAQ and the fetchmail home, but I can't find any
info on what this status code means. If I could get that info I might
get a lot farther with the reason for this failure. Normal POP3 mail works
with my mail host at my ISP, but I can't get fetchmail to get mail via
POP3 from the very same host. I'm very open to any suggestions.
Thanks!

Hi!
I have to use a Telesafe UTM ISDN-Card in my PC and would like to
use it under Linux. Does anyone know of a driver for this card?
Some of the chips on the card include
- Siemens HSCX SAB 82525N V 2.1
- NEC D70208L-10 V40
- CY7C136 (two of these)
- AMD AM79C30AJC/J
Maybe that permits educated guesses.
The card is running under Win98/NT, and I had ISDN working properly before
when I still had an ASUSCOM ISDN card.
I'd be grateful for any hints!

As a new user of this service (and linux) find all of this very useful.
Thanks for the posts guys.
I addition, you can find the User Manuals for the Cisco 675 at :
http://www.netspeed.com/techsup/telco/index.html
You are correct in the statement that they are using it solely as abridge
device and indeed
the biggest problem for home LAN users is the dhcp allocation of IP
addresses. I contacted
their Technical Support and asked them for 'suggestions', but they remain
clueless.

It's not very hard to use fwtk to setup a proxy service
if all you need to support one NT application - get the

the proxy on the linux machine, use linux as the gate.

I suggest buying a crossover cable from Belknap.
Alternatively you could make one - get an 8pin crimping
tool from Radio Shack for about $40, some cat5 cable and
some 8pin plugs from CompUsa or wherever.
If you cant find the crimping tool for sale study one
someone you know has and rig a temporary from a
screw vise or some clamps and wood, etc.
The most critical part is the manual insertion of
the wires - they must go all the way in.
There is also something called a crossover adapter
which works on the same principal but is more compact.
Or cannibalize a cable - only one side of it must
be altered.
You might even be able to rig the wires coming from
the receptacle of one of the NIC's.
