Samba will handle network logins. I believe I saw a reference to being able
to use profiles w/ Samba as well, but I've never tried to do it myself.

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.os.linux.security
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.security. This
is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time.
Procedural details are below.
Newsgroup line:
comp.os.linux.security Security and the Linux Operating System.
RATIONALE: comp.os.linux.security
The number of users of the Linux Operating System has grown
significantly over the last few years. A large number of these new
users are connecting their machines to the internet via modems with
little or no thought about the security of their machines. In
addition, the standard installation procedure of most Linux
distributions results in a machine with maximal capabilities but also
with a number of possible security holes. A search of a usenet
archiving site such as dejanews would quickly find a large number of
linux security discussion threads scattered across numerous existing
newsgroups.
The existing newsgroup comp.unix.security is useful but its
discussion content is aimed more at the unix admistrator level.
Therefore a newsgroup specifically aimed at the home/small business
Linux user would complement rather than replace discussion on
comp.unix.security.
CHARTER: comp.os.linux.security
This newsgroup is dedicated to the discussion of issues related to
establishing and maintaining the security of machines running the
Linux Operating System on all processor architectures.
Discussion of techniques and software for protecting machines against
remote attacks (via a network connection) as well as attacks from
untrusted local users are welcome. Discussion of ways and means of
breaking into Linux machines are not welcome.
The posting of commercial information to this group is permitted only
if the information is directly relevant to security and the Linux
Operating System.
Messages which are cross-posted to or from any advocacy newsgroup are
not welcome. Spamming, ECP and EMP of any sort is absolutely not
tolerated.
END CHARTER.
PROCEDURE:
This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase
of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups
should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue
for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For
Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion
warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.
All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.
This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How
to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these
documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any
questions about the process.
DISTRIBUTION:
This RFD has been posted to the newsgroups:
news.announce.newgroups,
news.groups,
comp.security.unix,
comp.os.linux.networking,
comp.os.linux.setup

Subject: named.boot & hosts files - are these correct use of
Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 18:31:14 +0000
Hi,
I have 2 machines on my network:-
10.0.1.250 win98
10.0.1.252 jilldando
jilldando is running named and win98 has it's TCP/IP DNS setup as
HOSTNAME win98 and DNS server as 10.0.1.252
I have ensured there is not C:\windows\hosts & C:\windows\lmhosts files
present on win98 (Renamed them *.sam)
I know for such a small network I should use hosts files on win98 &
jilldando but I want to get to grips with named.
So from win98 I hope to be able to enter any of the following and the IP
address will be returned so that the package can connect.
i.e. with ie agent typing the url http://www.shadow.home on win98 will
allow win98 to connect to 10.0.1.252 (jilldando) and so the Apache
server on that machine will then serve those pages. Once I know this is
setup correctly I can check /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf is setup
correctly which I believe it is using VirtualHost
Some resolving is happening, since Apache on win98 is not reporting any
resolving problems when starting up (Yes I am also run Apache 1.3.3 on
win98 as well as on jilldando), but it takes over 5 seconds to resolve.
Should it take this long?
The same happens with telnet jilldando, a wait of 60 seconds. If I
telnet 10.0.1.252 it is instant (Well almost). I cannot however telnet
to jilldando.linux.
NOTE: I want to use named service for local Intranet name resolving
(domain name translation into IP addresses).

Subject: modprobe error after kernel upgrade
Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 15:19:53 GMT
After upgrading my RH5.1 box from kernel 2.0.34 to 2.0.36 using the RH
RPM's, I've started getting the following error on bootup and
shutdown;
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-6
This error first shows after ipforward is turned off and then
reappears after the eth0 interface is enabled. The strange thing is
that earlier in the boot sequence the message "Finding module
dependancies....done" appears after the root partition is remounted.
Can someone please give me some clues as to where to look and what I
may need to do to fix this error. The box seems to be working okay
but I don't like mysterious errors.
TIA,
Scott.

Subject: 3c905B running DHCP in Red Hat 5.1
Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 09:36:56 -0600
Hi,
I am trying to bring my 3com 3c905B ethernet card up to run
with DHCP in Red Hat 5.1. However, in /var/log/messages, I
am seeing an entry by the dhcp client daemon saying "no
DHCPOFFER messages".
I then turned on the debugging option on the driver,
the following fhowed up after I typed dmesg.
Can anyone help me debug this? It seems like the driver
is trying to send packets, but after a number of tries,
it sets the card to promiscuous mode and then it seems
like the driver just went down w/ all the packets still
in its transmit queue.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

but that is not relevant
I also believe you like to do things the hardest way possible
!!!! you could print out the source code and hand assemble it onto the computer in
question
!!!!!!
I have a question or two to ponder...... which you DON'T have to answer of coarse.
Q. How much does it cost for your net connection per month ???????
Q. How much do you pay for Data/Phone charges
A Linux CDROM ( any flavour) costs a megere $3 to $15 here (Australia )
I now have purchased 6 such sets so far ( different releases/versions ), damn I'm
broke......
I even purchsed a Red Hat 5.2 CD for $15 of which I'm personally not that fond of but
non the less I have it... I don't consider that a loss either.....
I have foresight that I will indeed purchase many more in the future
I hate to have to say this....
But, GO BACK TO WINDOZE.....
it seems you will be happier there
At least you can get your free software, after buying the blanks to burn it onto
oh and the $200-$400 you probably paid (well maybe ) for burner as well.
My opinions are my own and not in any way representitive of that of my company..
