Sounds like a communications problem, probably you have the wrong baud rate
set. If you don't get even a "login" prompt, but instead get trash, more then
likely that's what it is. Try using minicom, and set your modem at different
speeds, then redial. If this all fails, try dialing into another ISP in your
area. You don't need to have an account with them, just know what their dial
up number is. Using minicom, you should be able to repeat the same tests on
the 2nd ISP. IF you never can get a "login" prompt, then theres something
wrong with your modem/and or setup. Its not a "winmodem", is it?

Hello,
I have an intel etherexpress 16 in my linux 2.0.36 box
with no problem, I got the new kernel 2.2.0-pre4
and tried my intel etherexpress 16, sometimes I now
get this error
i82586 startup timed out, status 0100, resetting
and keep getting that.
Once in a while it will actually boot, but more not that it
does. Anyone have any ideas?

I just compiled 2.1.132 yesterday (hmm.. downloaded it a day before
2.2 .. damn ;)
but now I have some troubles with my pppd ...
I can't connect right because it says it can't create the default
route ... the error is:
ioctl(SIOCADDRT)
the kernel docs said I needed to upgrade to pppd-2.3.3, but I run
RedHat 5.1, and it allready has 2.3.3. (all woks fine with a 2.0.34
though)
I don't have a default route and when I type route I get like this:

Now it's funny that you mention that because I've just started looking
at setting up my server for mail but it complains that it can't find
the ipop3d program as well. Sure enough, when I looked for it it's
nowhere to be found. What package does it come with, I'm a RH user,
or where can it be found?

Anyway, I guess he doesn't have any real problems (at least not with

played around with some settings and still can't run the following command
from a SCO Unix host to the RH5.1 Linux host:
rcmd linux_host who
I get the error
internet:connection refused.
I have the sco_host in the hosts.allow and hosts.equiv and in ~home/.rhosts
Any ideas ?

I am no expert, but I beleive that your second MX record (smtp) must
point to an 'A' record instead of 'CNAME' record. E.G. - change 'smtp
IN CNAME smtp.mydomain.co.uk.' to 'smtp IN A 1.2.3.4'.

I take it your machine is dynamically allocated an ip number at boot time -
bootp. So you probably do have specific IP's for each machine. I have not seen

Samba impliments microsoft networking (netbui) and should appear in the network
neighbourhood of your specified "workgroup". It has little to do with IP
allocations, unless you are testing a specific machine at IP x.y.z.x.

Samba can be a pain to configure, simply by the fantastic number of options that
have been implimented. I have found that searching in this news group will
generally reveal smb.conf files that you can modify for your own purposes.
