walter,

i have mediaone express and never had such problems with dhcp.  i did,
however,
decide to change the IP of my internal subnet  (i use two network cards,
one for
mediaone express, and one for my internal network)  I found that the
"gui"
that linux gives your for setting your ip is somewhat lacking.  it
changes your
ip address alright, but still leaves your "network" set incorrectly. 
your post
does not stipulate what your dynamically assigned ip really is. if it is
in
24.29.240.0/21 (/21 first 21 of address fixed, or netmask of
255.255.252.0) then
you should be able to get out.  the good news is that whatever damage
you do with the
route command is undone when you reboot.

it is possible that the default router is not being set when you get
your dhcp
setup.  in my case, i noticed that it was blank when i used netconf and
viewed "client
tasks", "routing and gateways", "set defaults" so i filled it in.  it is
most likely, in your case, 24.29.240.1.  try filling this in.  no reboot
required.  in fact, there are
scripts down in /etc/rc.d/init.d for starting and stopping the network. 
you almost 
never have to reboot.  

view, understand, then edit your config files:

look at /etc/dhcpc/hostinfo-eth0.  it should have all the proper
information already
filled in.  i don't think you should edit it, just view it.

also look at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.  in there are the scripts
that set your
routing, etc.  back these up before editing!  remember you have to be
root to edit them.
changes you make in /etc/sysconfig are persistent after reboot.  in my
case, when i changed
ip addresses within netconf, the netconf utility failed to change the
network entry in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifconfig-eth0.

view /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifconfig-eth0, 
all of its entries should be blank if you use dhcp, like this:

2 reasons:
1. No home networking means no connection sharing, hence potentially more
money for them
2. Winblows has zero security, esp. if it's networked. All those Winblows

which one your linux or win98 access some websites? if win98, try to put
your isp dns first?

I'm about to buy several of these cards, but I have one reservation. 
Somewhere, deep in the bowels of my consciousness, I seem to remember
reading that not all Netgear FA310TX cards use the DEC Tulip chipset. 
My uncertainty is reinforced when I look at the hardware howto and it
says:

  Netgear FA310TX (tulip)

Which suggests to me that maybe the tulip part is not standard on the
FA310TX. I'd be grateful if someone would allay my fears.

Hi:

I have an older HP 4M LaserJet printer that is attached to a Mac G3 via
ethernet. I have cabled (10BaseT) this original Mac LAN to my new Linux based
LAN (RedHat 5.2: 2.0.36). This tie works since the Mac has Internet access
over this LAN via IP masquerading on the Linux box which also serves as a
firewalled gateway to my ISP.

If I string a parallel printer port cable across the room on the floor, then
I can configure lpr to print from the Linux box to the printer directly
(locally). I have also configured two more Linux boxes on my LAN to lpr print
(remotely) to the printer using the first Linux box as the printer server.
This was really just minor manipulations of the /etc/printcap files on the
Linux clients and the /etc/hosts.lpd on the Linux server.

But, instead of having a 25 foot printer cable strung along the floor (a
tripping hazard), I'd like to utilize the LAN, get rid of the printer cable,
and allow all machines to print to the HP printer. How can I do this by the
simplest means possible?

I was hoping to use lpr to remotely print to the HP LaserJet from any of the
Linux boxes. But I believe that I need some information that I'm having a
difficult time finding. In particular, I think I would need to know/assign an
IP address to the JetDirect card in the LaserJet printer in order to set it
up as a remote printer for lpr. I can print the SELF TEST page on the printer
which identifies the ethernet card's hardware address, and even gives the
Appletalk Name (LaserJet 4) for the printer, but it does not give any
assigned IP address. I've tried various permutations of the Appletalk
Name/HW_ADDR in the /etc/printcap and assignments in the /etc/hosts files,
but none seem to allow remote printing.

I've tried to see if I can get the Mac to identify the assigned IP address of
the printer, but I couldn't figure out how to do this. Is there some way,
under Linux, to query the LAN and read both the hardware addresses and the
assigned IP addresses? Is there a way to have Linux assign an IP to the
JetDirect ethernet card in the printer which will still work for the Mac?

Ren;

Looks like you correctly answered your own question. However, PPP
doesn't have to be compiled into the kernel to be used. It can be
loaded as a module into a running kernel.

The module name would be ppp.o and be located in the /lib/modules/2.x.x/net
subdirectory.

Check the man page on /etc/conf.modules and the HowTo on loading
modules. Also check the manpage for "insmod"

You might try using netcfg that comes with RH 5.2.  It is a xwindows program
just type netcfg and you can specify which interface to use under
interfaces.  It also allows you to specify DNS entries.

Don't know exactly what you did, but you have to recompile the kernel
with ne2000 selected for the network card. I have a cheap ne2000
compatible card ( be aware all are not as compatible as they should be )
Plug and Pray can complicate things. What I did was boot DOS, use the
DOS configuration utitility that came with the card to change it's mode
from PNP to ne2000 and set the IRQ for the card, then recompile the
kernel with ne2000 support, providing the selected IRQ ( usually 10 for
a NIC )

Thanks, changed to IRQ 10 but no luck yet.

I would have thought that if it works under Win 95 with IRQ 9 that would
rule out a conflict...

Also upgraded to 2.2 kernel, that got rid of the errors in the messages log,
but still no link LED on the Ethernet card, same behavior as before.

wasn't immediately able to get it working at 10MB either.

Next step is probably going to be to put in another Ethernet adapter, but
this is a real pain.

On the chipset that you asked for Jim,
On the main chip ( the one with all the spider leg looking things radiating
from it.) is marked
RMC    RTL8019AS

There is also a big block looking thing that has pins that run through the
card and are soldered on the back. It is marked.

Along with the error messages and the fact that I do not have the DOS driver
disk for this device, will this be enough information?
Sorry so little. The NIC was a freebie from a friend. Windoze is seeing the
NIC and it is intended for the Windoze partition. I just wanted to configure
peer to peer networking in Linux before I get brave and started fooling with
SAMBA.
