It looks like you have some problem with TCP/IP setup...
Do you realy need IPX and AppleTalk? If not remove them from the kernel.
Recompile the kernel, check the ppp hwo-to
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO.html

I have just configured two ethernet cards to connect two linux machines.

I can remotely telnet to any of the machines, but not as root to either.
Just as a regular user.

Is this normal or I have misconfigured smth?

Thanx a lot!

I have played around with EQL and I have found out that I need
a Stacie IP to do this, but I have not given up on the idea of Multy
ppp links if not for one connection but for separate client ?

what I am trying to say is to use my firewall to use the each link
( ppp0, ppp1 ) for different computers on the local !

can it be done if so what do I need to do to get this up and running ?

Thank you for your time !

But you should then probably add all /dev/ttyp? as the specific tty name

Well, my modem wasn't ISDN. My problem was with netmask. I was using
255.255.255.0, whereas I needed 255.255.0.0.

At first you have to connect the right "route", you found it in
/etc/route.conf

Subject: Anyone use Pipex Dial with Linux PPP?
Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 09:46:37 -0000

Hello,

Does anyone out there successfully use Pipex Dial with Linux PPP? I have
been trying to set this up for a few days now (using RedHat 5.2) using the
instructions in http://www.dial.pipex.com/support/connect/linux/, but
without success. I've got it to dial in, but it eventually fails, writing a
"Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean" message into /var/log/messages.
According to the PPP-HOWTO this means that PPP has not yet started at the
server.
My modem is a Hayes Accura 28.8 V34+FAX.

Thanks in advance,

Colin

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Networking problems with 2.2.0-pre4
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 02:50:53 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've compiled a new 2.2.0-pre4 kernel, and modules. I've installed the
2.1.131 version of modutils. I've run depmod to create the necessary
dependencies. When I boot I have a couple of problems. 1) I get a couple of
messages: x2

modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-4
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-4
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5

2) Eth0 and eth1 load. However, eth0 is ne, and eth1 is ne2k-pci. When they
load I get the following message.
ne.c:v1.10 9/23/94 Donald Becker ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x300: 00 00 21 65 83 d5
eth0: NE2000 found at 0x300, using IRQ 10.
ne.c: PCI BIOS reports Realtek 8029 at i/o 0xde00, irq 11.
*
* Use of the PCI-NE2000 driver with this card is recommended!
*
NE*000 ethercard probe at 0xde00: 00 40 05 a1 dc f3
eth1: NE2000 found at 0xde00, using IRQ 11.

I was under the impression that /etc/conf.modules (which follows)

alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300 irq=10
alias eth1 ne2k-pci
options ne2k-pci io=0xde00 irq=11

would prevent the above from happening. I have both ne and ne2k-pci compiled
as modules, and I want my ne2k-pci to be loaded as an ne2k-pci and not as a
ne. That's what I thought the /etc/conf.modules did?

So then, I notice that my eth0 which is dhcp'd fails. That may not be a big
deal as I can still connect, but I'm worried that I'll be in dire straights
when my IP lease expires.

I also noticed that my default gateway which is normally set to eth0 is gone,
and I had to add it back by hand, which I can't quite figure out.

I'm running redhat 5.1. and I've configured my network with redhat's network
configuration tool, and I've specified that eth0 should be my default gateway,
so why isn't my network understanding that.

Any ideas on a step I may have missed in my setup would be greatly
appreciated. I must have missed something.

Thanks for any assistance.

RedHat puts its scripts into something like /usr/doc/ppp-xx.xx/scripts, for
some strange reason, while the HOWTO suggests putting them in
/etc/ppp/scripts. Although even looking at the ones in /usr/doc I haven't
found any correlation between them and what I typed into linuxconf. I've
given up using linuxconf for PPP and have been following the HOWTO, like
yourself.

Not that I've actually managed to connect successfully yet though...

I suspect that the garbage is nuthing more than plain PPP traffic :)

you probably use PAP authentication; which does not give you a login=20
