Not Quite, yes you can have more than one ip address per nic
it's called ip accounting, refer to the linux net-3-howto
good luck

Subject: Problem connecting Windows95 with Linux Samba over SSH
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 10:19:59 GMT
Hello
Hello
I recently bought 1 user license of SSH Tunnel&Terminal for Windows95.
Prior to that I was using a trial version for about a month. I want to
set a VPN between my home computer and office lan. The office lan
gateway is Linux (Debian) running samba while at home I use Windows 95.
When I was using the trial version, I was able to tunnel to my company's
lan via my internet connection. After I bought the version, it does not
work at all. I am tunneling port# 137, 138 and 139 (netbios ports). The
gateway machine at our company is Linux box running Samba while I am
using Windows95 at home.
There is also one another strange behaviour. I have two internet
services at home. One is dial-up (28.8K) while another is cable modem
(Ethernet -Static IP Address).
I can map the network drive of Linux on my PC using dial-up connection
but cannot map the same drive if I use Ethernet (cable modem)
I am not sure whether the tunnel is not working or whether samba cannot
resolve the netbios name, etc. etc.
There are some shared directories on Linux machine that I need to access
at home.
Can someone help.Any help will be highly appreciated
Regards,
Vipul

Wait...I haven't read the message, but based on the subject line, let me
guess--you are running Red Hat! Looking further into your message, I see
that I am correct. (Why doesn't Red Hat fix this braindead behavior??).
You have to install the IMAP RPM. The pop3 daemon is in there.
Good Luck

Subject: ~user accounts
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 00:07:51 +1100
Hi all
Okay so.....
I have the Apache server running and the "Its worked" page comes up now i
want to create ~user accounts so people can have their own web space.
using xwindows i have created an account named "matt" and given it a
password. I can log into this account and its own dir was created. I can
telnet and ftp to it. I have a Index.htm web page in there but Apache wont
find it.
This account and the directory is called "matt" not "~matt" so how and when
does the "~" come into things?
Even a web page url with an explanation on the ~user accounts issue would be
a big help.
Thanks Matt Chipman

I setup my Toshiba 4020CDT laptop with 16-bit 3COM ethernet card,
dual-booting Linux (Redhat 5.2) and NT 4.0.
In NT, the network card works fine.
When I installed Linux, I chose not to configure networking.
However, when I boot, I see lots of messages that networking
services were started.
But I can't ping anything on my local subnet.
(PPP networking works great, by the way).
Is there a way to configure networking without reinstalling Linux?
Thanks a bunch,

Hi
The ppp0 chat script is in "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts" directory
and the name of the file is "chat-ppp0". Go edit this file and start
using the control panel Activate/DeActivate.

You are in luck today. The scripts RH uses are in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
in all their glory..... The scripts in /usr/doc/ppp-xx.yyy
are there for documentation purposes.

On RH 5.0, the scripts configured by netcfg are located at
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. So long as you don't call them or
use a special RedHat program for calling them, then they don't
function.
The scripts at /usr/doc/ppp-xx.xx/scripts are the same as those
found on some other distributions.

Hi Matt,
The apache module that controls this is documented at
http://www.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_userdir.html and you will probably also
find it at www.yoursite.domain/manual once you have seen the default apache
page.
The entry involved is in the srm.conf file that is put in different places
depending on whether you installed an rpm or compliled it on yourself. I put
mine in /etc/httpd and I've seen it in /etc/httpd/conf as well. Here is the
section of the srm.conf file that determines what 'subdirectory' under ~user
contains the html files.
# UserDir: The name of the directory which is appended onto a user's
home
# directory if a ~user request is recieved.
UserDir public_html
All you need to do is locate this file and view the entry and then create a
subdirectory under the /home/matt (or wherever you put ~matt). Make sure
that the directory you create has world permissions r-x and the files within
also, I think. This should do it.
Hope this helps
Greyman

Many, many ISPs and companies use Squid. It is not immediately straight
forward to install and configure correctly, but it works great. You can find
it at http://squid.nlanr.net along with plenty of info.

Also, I'm having some trouble setting up the config files. Does anyone

Subject: SPX sockets (kernel 2.2.0-pre5)
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 13:23:54 GMT
Hi,
I have to write a small client for a server that uses SPX. All I need to
know is how to get an SPX socket and how to connect to the server (I know the
adress and the "port"). I would also like to know how to "bind", "accept"
and "listen" but that can wait since all I have to do is the client side.
I wrote to the developers of the kernel module but have gotten no answer yet
and I thought that maybe one of you out there know how to do it.
Thanks in advance.
PS: I know how to go about it when it is a TCP connection, so you don't need
to go into the fine details if it is like that.

Subject: Linux as PPTP Server for MS PPTP Clients?
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 08:55:35 -0400
We are evaluating Linux to supplement/replace our NT servers. At present
we use Microsoft PPTP to allow remote NT clients to access our office
network via our Internet connection. My question is: Is there a
combination of NT client software and Linux server software to allow
VPN/PPTP type connections? In my search of Linux HOW-TOs, etc. I have
come across Linux-to-Linux VPN connections and even a Linux client for
MS PPTP ( http://www.pdos.lcs.mit.edu/~cananian/Projects/PPTP/) but no
Linux PPTP servers for MS clients. Ideally we would like a Linux daemon
that would work with the standard NT client.
Any suggested solutions?
