A quick follow up to what I've already posted:

I've also noticed that ifconfig seems to indicate I'm getting a significant
amount of errors compared to actual transferred packets.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:21:65:83:D5
          inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Bcast:206.228.186.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:40469 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:39137 errors:152903 dropped:1323 overruns:0
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi,

Is it possible, or will it possible, to change the MAC address in the
outgoing packet on a per-packet basis?

(I'm trying to build a device that's COMPLETELY transparant, so it has
to send out packets with the same MAC address as the incoming packets)

Oops - I forgot to ask:

Is there any way that I might be of help with this? Or would you prefer
to just do things by yourself - and in your own good time?

Anyway - I look forward to it!

I've used at least a dozen different brands of NE2000 compatible NICs with
Linux and have never had a problem....Do you have the setup disk for any
of them?? Did you set the config on them manually??

I would have to agree with mark the NE2000-compatible cards are
good (I have 2 systems on them), also have no problems with the
old 3com 3c509's (3 systems on them), and 2 systems running the
ISA linksys NE2000 compatible card (all you do is turn off PNP on
the linksys card and specify your IRQ and IO). I prefer the old
NIC's, I have better luck with them.

Subject: DHCP renewal not allowed on firewall
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 16:16:11 GMT

(Not sure if this went through the first time..)

I recently setup a RH 5.2 based firewall largely using the information from
Robert Ziegler's web page at http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/linux/index3.shtml
and am having trouble configuring it to allow DHCP lease renewal. The
firewall sits between a private networking using the 192.168.x.x address
range and a DHCP connection on a USWest DSL line in Portland OR.

The problem with my setup is that the DHCP renewal process is getting blocked
and 4 hours after the initial connection, the external interface is disabled.
Up until that time, the computers on the internal network can access services
on the outside world quite normally. I am using the rc.firewall script from
the above page (inputted with my relevant IP info, obviously) which is called
from the dhcpc-done script also from the same page. Looking at the actual
firewalling rules, it appears as if the renewal process is quite explicitly
allowed so I was hesitant to go in commenting out rules until things worked.

What is the best way to troubleshoot this kind of problem? Could there be
another file on my system that I may have not configured correctly that would
be an accessory to the problem? (I have already compiled my kernel with the
necessary firewalling and networking support.)

Here is a snippet from my log file. 172.16.5.180 is the DHCP server and
X.X.X.X is my external IP address.

Anyone know how to determine how many file descriptors a particular
process is currently using? I have a few processes running all the time
and I'd like to run a cron job to keep track of how many file descriptors
they are using at various times of the day, etc etc. I imagine it would be
somewhere in /proc/PID somewhere but I can't find any reference to it.

Or even better a FAQ/HOWTO etc with fairly detailed lists of the info I
can dig out of /proc ?

Subject: PPP - Can connect but can't go anywhere
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 15:01:19 -0800

I've been having an odd PPP problem.

I have two linux boxes. On my main box when I dial up using the script my
ISP
gave me, it will connect, but I can't get anywhere most of the time. On a
rare
occasion I can connect to places, but it never lasts. When I try to run
nslookup it doesn't even bring up a prompt. When I run ping, only a couple
(if
any) packets get out. Traceroute ususally gives up. And netstat and route
both
refuse to display anything.

But, when I switch the modem to my other linux box and run the same connect
scripts again, they work perfectly everytime.

Both boxes are RedHat 5.2 and are running kernel version 2.1.132.
It is worth noting that the box that is having troubles connects perfectly
when
I boot it into Win95.

Any suggestions?

                               Seth.

Are you saying you can't connect with the second box to those sites?

Is IP forwarding on? Are you using a web proxy (which I highly
recommend as masquerading doesn't work too well)? Do they have the same
IP subnet so that forwarding rules work?

traceroute under RH 5.1 and later uses the eth0 by default. You have to
explicitly say that you want it to use your ppp0 device.

traceroute domain.com -i ppp0

You need to allow ftp access.

If you are using the inetd superserver, then check the /etc/hosts.allow and
/etc/hosts.deny files. In these you can specify things like:

    in.telnetd: 203.46.81.128/255.255.255.192
    in.ftpd: ALL

    ALL: 203.46.81.128/255.255.255.192
    ALL: ALL

Otherwise, you also need to set the /etc/ftp* files.
/etc/ftpusers - usernames that are not allowed to login
/etc/ftphosts - access rules for hosts attempting to login
/etc/ftpaccess - rules about what can be done.

These are the main two. Check out the man pages for ftpaccess, ftphosts for
more detail.

There is another way to do so: Install a minimal /usr on each computer
that holds just those files (with correct path of course) that are
needed until the nfs is available. When you mount /usr via nfs the
original one is hidden and any new access to /usr uses nfs. Any files
on the old /usr (which is hidden) that are already opend when nfs is
mounted remain open and accessible for those processes that have a
valid file descriptor to the file. Once they close and reopen the file
they get the new one from nfs (if present).

Of course you must make sure that
a) any files on the local /usr do exists on the remote one too and
b) all executables, shared libraries etc. are the same
otherwise you might experience strange behavior (although I have not
yet tried out, it might work without this).

Bye,
Michael
