I'm not a Mac expert, but isn't Ethertalk, AppleTalk over Ethernet? If
so, Linux will not route those packets to the best of my knowledge.
However, if MacIP wants to be compatible with the rest of the world,
which it probably is, then it is using standard IP packets. Linux will
route them. Look into IP forwarding, routing, and masquerading. If IP
is all you are interested in (with the data embedded in the IP packet)
then Linux will work.

Linux doesn't natively support the NOS used by MS Windows machines (Microsoft
Windows Network). This NOS protocol is called SMB (for Server Message Block),
and can be provided on Linux through a third-party daemon called Samba.
Samba is free, and available at ftp://samba.anu.edu.au/pub/samba. There's lots
of documentation available; check out the Samba-HOWTO.

Subtract 1 from the output of
%ls -l /proc/####/fd | wc -l
Where #### is the process number you are looking at. When run on a
current bash, I get 5 (or 4 open descriptors).

Yes - forgot to mention I did "killall -HUP rpc.nfsd rpc.mountd" after
changing /etc/exports and before attempting the mount command.

Subject: routing problem? - help needed
Date: 8 Jan 1999 18:19:36 GMT
I dont know if this a routing problem or something else.
I had a working network setup using diald and ppp. Recently I have upgraded
my machine, new hard disk, mother
board and modem and since then my network connection with my ISP has not
worked fully. I put the new modem in the same place as the old one (i.e.
same com port and DMA) and a move the location of Linux around from one
disk to another.
The problem is this: I cant get any web or email connection. I have a
ppp-on script that uses chat and that works OK. I can start it up with
ppp-on and ping my ISP but Netscape complain no such domain whenever I
enter any web address. Other applications also give errors like unknown
host and fetchmail gives connecting to host: Connection refused. I get
the error message instantly like it did not even attempt to connect to my
ISP even if the ppp link is up. Diald gives no error messages and tcpdump
show that the only network activity is on lo nothing on the default slip
interface for diald.
Ive checked the network files a number of times and can see not obvious
errors. This is to me a bit odd as all the files are the same as they were
when it all worked before I upgraded. Somewhere along the lines I must have
failed to copy something or altered something but I cant see what. In some
ways it sounds to me like there is no default route set up but route says
there is or something else is wrong with the routing. I include some of the
results from ifconfig and netstat if that helps:
netstat -i

The Ethernet interface is a 3Com Ethernet card. It has been in my machine
for a while but I havent finished building a second computer for it to
talk to. It was there when my network was working.
The host file is setup with the localhost and my machine and domain. The
host.conf file just has order hosts in it.
I have nag and the normal HOWTOs but they have not been of much help. Most
of the problems I have had with Linux I have fixed my self but this one I
am at a bit of a loss. Any help appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

i have a few linux boxes around here and also a sun (solaris 2.5.1).
i use kernel 2.2pre4 with knfsd and kmountd. i export e.g.
/home sun.my.domain(options)
/home linux.my.domain(same options)
i can mount it without problems from any of the other linux stations but
not from the sun. the sun gives the error message:
nfs mount: linux: NFS service not responding
nfs mount: retrying: /home
but on the linux box (the nfs server), the message in the logfile reads:
linux mountd[66]: authenticated mount request from sun.my.domain:672
so it seems to be accepted. what's the difference between sun and linux
mounts?
thanx in advance,

If you're really adept at this Linux stuff, set up an IRC server. You

I regularly use SecureCRT to connect to sshd version 1.2.26. It works

Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 07:53:54 GMT
Hello,
Is there a UNIX commandline utility for monitoring system resources? I'm
writing a program that I want to optimize based on system resources such as
network card throughput, cpu usage, memory usage...etc. In particular, I
would think that the NIC would be the bottleneck in this application so some
good numbers on outbound/inbound and general load nic would be great. I could
live with getting the rest of the info from proc.
Thanks,

I do this all the time.
<ctrl>-a then 'q' ---- leaves minicom
then from the shell
# /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem 115200 default route
(115200 is the baud rate I connect at, it can be any baud rate, but must
match the minicom setting you dialed at)
Good luck

That sounds reasonable. I'm running Slackware 3.5.0 and my system lets me
telnet in as root. How can I set it to disallow that? I'm trying to
discourage myself from logging in as root.
Also, Samba allows root to connect from a Win95 box with Microsoft
Networking. I don't do that, but I tried it once and it worked. Any
suggestions on how to change that, while I'm on the subject?
The FTP and AppleShare servers do deny root logins.

I've just cracked this nut myself with some help from this NG
create a .fetchmailrc file.
#BOF
poll pop.server.com proto pop3
user popuserid, with password secret, is local-user here;
#EOF
fetchmail -f /root/.fetcmailrc
in the .fetcmailrc file just repeat the two lines and change userid,
password and local userid.
fetchmail stores the incomming mail in local-userid's /~.
Then just use pop3 to collect mail from your server to the clients. If you
are using RedHat remember to install imap rpm.

I know that is possible connecting as root !
But the root user must be able to do it, it must be configure "ad hoc" to
connecting via telnet.
