Subject: e-mail doesn't get delivered on Linux system [?]

I have a simple 2-machine system connected with ethernet. FTP and
telnet work fine, using either the machine names or the IP numbers.
Normally these machines are not connected to the internet, though
occasionally I do a PPP login on one machine; either machine can use
this login to communicate over that connection.

The problem is that I cannot e-mail from either machine to the other.
This problem occurs whether I use the machine name or the IP #.
However if I telnet to the other machine's port 25, then I can
successfully e-mail (in either direction). Also, e-mail works if
the sender telnets into the receiving machine, and sends the mail
to a user on that machine.

Using tcpdump, I can see that the normal e-mail method (using plain 'mail'
and exim [these are Debian/slink systems]) is making some attempt to
send the mail. Still, no mail appears to be received, since the sender
complains that the mail could not be delivered. Again, this occurs
without regard for the form of address (e.g. the host name or the IP #).

If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might further diagnose this
problem -- please tell me! Thanks!

I am thinking about buying the Sony Vaio 505 laptop but I am concerned about
the modem/network card that it has. The card is the Platinium MC220 by COM1.
It is supposed to be a card that supports modem, ISDN, GSM and Ethernet
connection.

I have found in <http://www.snafu.de/~wehe/modem_linux.html> that this card
works as a modem but I am not sure if it's fine as an Ethernet card.

Any body had any experience with that?

Co-ax. I take it you are using t-pieces & terminators.
First thing is to ping the system you are running ping on.
Run "ping localhost". Does this work?
If so then, run "ping machine1".

Where's your parallel port? I ask as it can use IRQ 7. Maybe this is a
factor?

Why on earth would you have chained print servers/queues? What is the
difference (to Windows) between sending the job to a Linux queue (and
thence on to the JD) or sending to the JetDirect queue? Do you
specifically want a slower and more complex print setup? I get the
feeling you don't have a solid grasp of what a JetDirect is. It's not
just a network interface, it's a standalone print server and queue all
by itself.

Did I misunderstand you?

Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 12:36:47 -0000

What I do is I pass the arguments from /ect/ppp/ip-up.local to my
firewall script. One of the arguments $4 or $5 (man pppd) is the
assigned IP address of the PPP link. The script, ip-up.local is
called from /etc/ppp/ip-up each time an IP interface is brought up.
This way you can reset your rules each time the PPP link is restored.

Carl Filpo wrote in message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>...
I have set up particular firewall rules with ipfwadm.

My problem is that when the ppp link dies and comes up again the
rules are forgotton (or a new set of default rules are deployed).

I currently have some ipfwadm commands in my rc startup file
but the rules no longer apply once the ppp link is brought down,
then up again

I would like to have a particular set of firewall rules deployed each
time the ppp link is brought up. How can I do this ?

I believe that many potential respondants assumed that you meant
"Linux installations" when you said "other installations". If you
meant that your modem works under Windows but not Linux, then you may
have a win-modem: less than a modem in the classical sense, it's a
Windows-only modem. A modem that dumps much of the processing onto
the CPU instead of doing it itself. That slows your computer down
some. To make a long story short: a winmodem will not work under
Linux. You can look it up on www.dejanews.com if you doubt me.

My .htaccess file looks like this:

order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from <mydomain>
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/htpasswd.conf
AuthName "Nicht fr jeden !"
require user <myself>
Satisfy any

However, when I try to access the directory via Netscape, I get error messages
like this:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to
complete your request.

When I look into the httpd.error_log file, I see a message:
order not allowed here.

When I remove the order, deny, allow lines, the access to the directory is
unlimited. How can I make it work ? The htpasswd.conf is configured.

Any help appreciated.

Howdy,

I was hoping someone could point me to some documentation (if it's too
lengthy to explain via email) on how to setup a linux system (debian 2.1
in this case) to support multiple IP's per network interface. in this
particular case it will be multiple IP's for one ethernet interface for
the purpose of using IP based virtual hosts in apache. It looks like it's
easy enough to configure apache for this, but I have no idea how to
configure the network interface to support more than one IP. I've checked
the HOWTO's that looked relevant but couldn't come up with anything.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Response codes are there (it indicates I'm connecting at 28800, which is
correct). It appears to be sending the username/password, because the ISP
isn't timing out the connection. It seems to think it has a serial <->
ppp0 interface, but it just never shows up.

Windows connects just fine (I'm presently using a Win box for a gateway,

I had similar problems with a WD8013 some time ago.

Make sure the ram at 0xB0000 is available for use in the
bios-settings, and isn't shadowed. On my motherboard i had to make
'ISA ram under 1mb' available (never seen that one on another
motherboard before, but this was at a time I almost gave up on the
stupid thing and were to install some other netcard)

If you have the dos-diagnostic stuff you can also make sure that the
right connector is used. I think it's something like. Choose
automatically between UTP and BNC

I don't know if this still holds true in PCI times, but certainly in
the old ages the RAM address of these cards should be between 0xc0000
and 0xEffff to prevent collisions with videomemory

Yes I did. I said that the US lost more troops in WWII than the population
of England.

I am not debating that, never have, never will. I said, and I'll keep it
simple for you, "... how many US troops died? .... it was more than your
entire country." Now, where in there do I ever mention the US Civil War
or compare the number of US dead in WWII with the Civil War?

AFAIK, the wisecom isdn-adapters (tigerjet chip) are not supported by
Linux.

Hi Jef,

This sounds like your B box is not relesing the LP port for plip
to work with, try modprobe lp, then modprobe -r lp to clear the
port for the next device to use.

I use plip all the time from a 5.2 box to a 6.0 box, if you need
more help post back to the group
