Install, install, install!!! You'll make your OS killing mistakes (and
you will) now and not when it counts. From most of the SYSADMIN books
I've been reading, it usually takes 3 installs for someone to actually
learn the OS without killing anything unrecoverably.
Hint: As SOON as you install, make a user and always log in as that
person. Don't use 'su' or 'root' until you are SURE whatever it is you
wanted to do is the right thing.

Hey man, thanks! I'm currently looking into using another computer to
IPMasq my internet connection between several more, but don't have
enough monitors/keyboards to spare. So when I want to make changes,
I'll have to telnet into the router PC. Windows' telnet isn't exactly
the best when you have to edit files (which is the only reason I'd
pretty much have to logon to it), and this helps oodles. Thanks!

I dunno how to get a 2nd card going but I guess it's just as easy...
try this: ifconfig eth1 up
ifconfig is the utility that will give you the info about your
cards...irq's, hardware addresses, etc...
you may need to do a route add for the second card...not really sure
though. Good luck!

A friend of mine says his ISP told him that the links timeout after 3
days. Aparently it's in a standard somewhere. Friend has no more
details, but it seems to be a common theme.

The reason for this is you don't have the path to the /sbin directory
which root gets when you logon.
try doing
su -
and then typing shutdown.
Or, alternately, just use
/sbin/shutdown
when you use su

Problem resolved!
Someone's tip about using "tail -f /var/log/messages" led to the discovery
that my chat script was to blame for pppd's initial difficulty grabbing
the modem. I had failed to surround a send string containing spaces with
a pair of quote marks:
i.e. ABORT NO CARRIER
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
As for minicom and seyon, they had stopped grabbing the modem because I
had made some desparate changes to my isapnp.conf file, commenting out the
line that defined the modem's I/O port address.
Many thanks, Chris, for getting me thinking.

As somebody else suggested, find the parent process with 'pstree' or
'ps auxf', then kill -9 it.
Another way is to switch runlevel to non-graphical multiuser
(runlevel 3 in redhat), or even 1 (single user), if paranoid, by
'/sbin/init 3' or whatever number. Hint: check /etc/inittab.
Hope that helps,

Read the Firewall HOWTO which is available at from the Linux
Documentation Project at http://metalab.unc.edu/Linux/HOWTO/Firewall-
HOWTO.html and probably on your Linux box. It talks about how to set up
ipfwadm, which is probably all that you need.

Date: 11 Jan 1999 06:04:30 GMT
Can anyone tell me where I can get a Telnet client for Win95/98 which will
give me full functionality.
I have on my network, a Linux PC which is my SAMBA server. It has no
keyboard, screen or mouse - just a network connection. When I want access
this box to drive it, I telnet to it from a Win95 or Win98 system but when
I do, the terminal emulation offered by WIN95/98 is ANSI, despite the
buttons to change the emulation from VT100/ANSI to VT52. Changing the
TERM= variable to TERM=vt100 allows greater functionality but only F1-F4
work. Yes I can emulate these keys with the ESC-0-9 sequence but there
must be a better way. If I telnet to the SAMBA server from a Linux client
(Redhat 5.0 or 5.2) the session is exactly correct. All function keys work
and the colours are OK as well. Obviously the Linux Telnet client is a
better fit (the TERM= variable is TERM=linux). There are a zillion
freeware/shareware telnet clients a I don't want to try them all - all I
want is one that gives me all the function keys and gets the colours right.
PS. It would be really neat if you could run X via Telnet but this is
asking too much. BTW on the WIN front I use PcAnywhere for the same type
of function to access a WIN95 server and it works like a dream.

I'm in exactly the same position. Nobody seems to be answering this one,
so if you find out the answer, would you mind copying it to me?
I've tried recompiling my kernel to include packet forwarding and
masquerade, reading the masquerade, ppp and network howtos - still
clueless.
I have noticed an error in my /var/log/messages file (use tail -f to
view it) that appears when my pppd logs in saying "ARP Proxy error". DO
you have the same thing?
