Hello,
i am using masquerading and found out that my linux box does't
show the net traffic by "netstat -an" . In fact i can see the list of
connections on my pc where the application is running.
Why is this so? How can i see the hole traffic on my linux server,
which acts as my router?
Thanx,
Arash :-)

The other posters offerred some good advice, so I will just add this.
Are you using a normal user account to login? By default, the root user
can't log in remotely.

I need to masquerade 2 internal networks with 2 different IP addresses.
I have been fighting with iproute2 but have had no luck in setting this
up. Hs anyone here accomplished this? And if so, can you spare a few
pointers?

Hello!
I just purchased a DE-Link DE-650 Ethernet PCMCIA card for my notebook but
noticed that I can only get the 10Base-T port (TP) to work. The 10Base-2,
i.e. BNC, port does not work. As far as I can tell there are no packets
received or transmitted via BNC.
Do I have to configure the DE-650 in any way to switch between ports? If
yes, how?
Or is the transceiver module broken?
If anyone has a DE-650 and uses BNC I would be happe to receive a short mail
;) Any other ideas are welcome too...

I've installed the ssh 1.2.6 rpms from ftp.reply.com on two machines
running RedHat Linux 5.2:
[root@helena schwarz]# rpm -qa|grep ^ssh
ssh-extras-1.2.26-1i
ssh-server-1.2.26-1i
ssh-clients-1.2.26-1i
ssh-1.2.26-1i
now when trying to log in from the one (helena) to the other (luthien),
with an appropriate .shosts file being in place, I get:
...
helena.physik.tu-berlin.de: Waiting for server public key.
helena.physik.tu-berlin.de: Received server public key (768 bits) and host
key (1024 bits).

was 'helena.physik.tu-berlin.de'.
helena.physik.tu-berlin.de: Remote: Try logging back from the server
machine with the canonical host name using ssh, and then try again.
helena.physik.tu-berlin.de: Server refused our rhosts authentication or
host key.
helena.physik.tu-berlin.de: No agent.
helena.physik.tu-berlin.de: Doing password authentication.
what exactly is the remote server complaining about?
I'm not using an /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts on any machine. Might this be
the problem?
Loging into other machines where I have compiled sshd myself is no problem
without a machine-wide ssh_known_hosts on either client or server machine.
Did the maintainers of the ssh rpms use some specific options to enforce
some extra checks? Could I override it in sshd_config?
Could it be a resolve problem (hostname vs. FQDN)?
Any suggestions to clear the situation?

Cool, but will the current configuration match the default kernel (I
selected the option to use the kernel from the boot disk) after installing
Slackware? It won't do any good to save the current configuration unless it
matches the current kernel, eh?
Thanks for all the help you guys are giving me. I know I've drifed off
topic.

That would be an interesting thing. I have something similar I would like
to do.
I use a removable hard drive carrier. I would like to be able to pull it
out of my
work machine and put it into my home machine and boot up the proper kernels
and
use the proper initialization files, etc, based on the hardware it "susses
out"
I believe there is a way to do it from the LILO boot, but I was looking for
something
even more automatic.

Subject: ppp-2.3.5 install in Slackware 3.6?
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 22:35:22 GMT
I'm running Slackware 3.6, originally using kernel 2.0.35. I had set up a ppp
dialup using the ppp-setup script which worked fine. My only problem is that
it will not dial on demand (I have a second computer using Win 3.1 and I'd
like the Linux box to "sense" when it needs the ppp connection and dial my
ISP).
When I boot one of the messages I get declares ppp version 2.2.0 and reading
some docs and the ppp scripts created by Slackware, I think I need a newer
version of pppd (the docs mention that dial on demand was implemented in
versions after 2.2.0). I downloaded ppp-2.3.5 from sunsite but I can't get
my kernel to compile. After much fooling with it I tried with fresh source
for 2.0.36 kernel. Still no go. What am I doing wrong? Here is what I'm doing.
(as per the ppp-2.3.5 docs)...
./configure
make kernel (both these go fine)
Then to compile my kernel I use...
make menu_config (yes I choose all the networking and ppp stuff)
make dep
make clean
make zlilo (this is where it fails with the following)

Anyone know why I can't get the kernel to compile after pppd's "make kernel"
gets it? I have compiled my kernel several times before this with no trouble.
- OR - does anyone use another package for "on demand dialing"?

Subject: Importance of securing systems
Date: 13 Apr 1999 22:55:43 GMT
I posted this originally ot comp.os.linux.misc....I think it's
more appropriate here. Please excuse the duplicate posting if
you've already seen the original. jlm
A while back I had asked about suspicious network activity (that turned
out to be innocent). At that time I had volunteered to post a summary
of some of the activity I typically see. Since I was looking at the
log files anyway, I thought I would follow through and provide a
glimpse of what goes on.
Since I got my cable modem and my machine is on the net 24/7 I see
fairly active attempts to connect. Most times it's just a telnet,
other times there will be corresponding hits on finger, popper,
ftp, web, and several others. I generally keep 8 weeks worth of
log files. In the last 8 weeks I had 80 attempts to telnet into
my machine.
My machine is not advertized. There shouldn't be any web links to it,
I don't use the domain name assigned by @home in my email, net postings,
or anything else. I maintain my account at another ISP (Aracnet), and
use it for news and mail. My machine is just a random brick in the wall.
And it gets probed aften.
What this should say to anyone is that you shouldn't take your system's
security for granted. Don't believe just because you're anonymous
that you're safe.
Here are the attempts extracted from the log file(s). As you can see,
they come from all over:
