Subject: Apache 1.3.3 - multiple cgi-bin/ dir's without ScriptAlias?
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 07:00:35 GMT

Thanks for bothering with me on this one...I think it's rather simple
but none of my attempts have worked.

I am running Apache 1.3.3 on RedHat Linux 5.1 (Manhattan) with kernel
2.0.35. I have successfully setup several user directories, and I
want each to have its own /cgi-bin/. Do I put a dir called "cgi-bin"
in the UserDir (for me it's /home/user/html) and put a ScriptAlias in
srm.conf. My question is this: can I setup a "directory mask" such as
/home/*/html/cgi-bin/ somewhere in the conf files for all user
cgi-bin/ directories? I plan on having MANY users on this system and
I do not want to overload my srm file with that many ScriptAlias
lines. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello all,

I have 2 win9x PC's in a IPX network, one of which can dial into
internet via an analog modem. I would like to share the account and
thought of using a linux box for the internet connectivity. What would
be the requirements for the linux box ? Do I need anything else besides
a normal distribution, if i don't want to share files between the linux
box and the win9x pc's ? Where would I find a more or less step by step
solution(book, magazine,url, ..) as i'm as you could guess quite a
newbie to linux.

Thanks in advance,

Sven Biebaut

Thanks, this is exactly what I've been looking for. I suppose fd should have

detailing
more of the info available under /proc would you ?

Subject: Linux ip accounting problem
Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 19:53:23 +1100

I am running a Debian 2.0 system with kernel 2.0.35, and I am having trouble
with IP accounting.

I have managed to set up the rules that I needed, and the IP accounting
system delivers the information I want, but after a few minutes the
information resets to 0 bytes for all rules and starts again. It keeps
resetting to 0 every few minutes, making it impossible to use the IP
accounting system to gather bandwidth usage totals.

Is there some reason the IP accounting system is behaving like this? Is
there some way to fix it?

Go to http://metalab.unc.edu/Linux/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX-3.html#ss3.1 and
read the HOWTO's. They should get you started. Specifically, read the
Firewall HOWTO, Modem HOWTO, PPP HOWTO, DHCP mini-HOWTO, IP Masquerade
mini-HOWTO, and the ISP Connectivity mini-HOWTO.

I have a linux box acting as gateway for three other machines and
everything is working fine. Here's how I'm set up:

    cable modem
         |
     linux box
         |
  ------hub------
  | | |
 box1 box2 box3

linux box:
eth0 (connected to cable modem)
 ip_addr 24.bbb.ccc.ddd ETH0_IPADDR
 netmask 255.255.ccc.0 ETH0_NETMSK
 network 24.bbb.ccc.0 ETH0_NETWRK
 gateway 24.bbb.ccc.ddd ETH0_GATEWY
eth1 (connected to hub)
 ip_addr 192.168.1.1 ETH1_IPADDR
 netmask 255.255.255.0 ETH1_NETMSK
 network 192.168.1.0 ETH1_NETWRK

box1:
ip_addr 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

box2:
ip_addr 192.168.1.3

box3:
ip_addr 192.168.1.4

I needed to recompile the linux kernel with the following extra options
turned on (I'm using debian linux with kernel 2.0.34):
IP: masquerading
IP: ipautofw masquerading (EXPERIMENTAL)

Then, I told the linux box which networks it's connected to:

# localhost network
route add -net 127.0.0.0
# cable modem network
route add -net ${ETH0_NETWRK}
# internal network (via hub)
route add -net ${ETH1_NETWRK}

Next, I told the linux box what it's default route is. This may be what
you're missing. Your internal boxes can send packets to the linux box but
it doesn't know what to do with them. The linux box needs to know who to
route packets it receives from the internal network to.

# default route of linux box
route add default gw ${ETH0_GATEWY} metric 1

Finally, I set up ipfwadm and ipatufw to masquerade and to port forward
certain protocols to my other boxes.

# deny everything
[stuff deleted]

# accept traffic from internal network to linux box
ipfwadm -I -a accept -S ${ETH1_NETWRK}/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -W eth1
ipfwadm -O -a accept -S 0.0.0.0/0 -D ${ETH1_NETWRK}/24 -W eth1

# accept traffic from interface attached to cable modem
ipfwadm -I -a accept -S 0.0.0.0/0 -D ${ETH0_IPADDR}/32 -W eth0
ipfwadm -O -a accept -S ${ETH0_IPADDR}/32 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -W eth0

# now masqeurade between the internal network and the cable modem
ipfwadm -F -a masq -S ${ETH1_NETWRK}/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -W eth0

# forward www packets to box2
ipautofw -A -p tcp 80 192.168.1.3:80
ipautofw -A -p udp 80 192.168.1.3:80

etc etc etc

BTW, you could patch the kernel to use ipportfw. I think its a better
tool than ipautofw.

Hope this helps,

Luca

I had the same problem some time ago. On my machines, I had installed
TCP/IP _AND_ IPX/SPX together with the NetWare Requestor. I removed all
the NetWare Stuff (Protocoll IPX/SPX and Requestor) and everything
worked fine... Maybee this is like the situation at you..

I haven't, particularly as the two machines have now "shaken hands"
from a distance using a parallel cable and PLIP. They still can't
stand each other's company though, and the RedHat installation grinds
to a halt. I'm sure I'll get it, but any advice from someone with a
similar setup would be most welcome!

Cheers :)

P.S. Linux is supposed to be network friendly - right! :)
