Hi,

thanks for the advive. Disabling plug and play worked!

My RH 5.2 found my 3com card and all seemed well with the install. BUT not
able to ping to another machine. All I did was disable the PNP and it
worked. I didn't even change the IRQ or i/o address. just disabling the pnp
did the trick.

With redhat 5.x you don't need to recompile the kernel unless you need
ipautofw (which is needed for games and conferencing). Just install redhat
and run the ipfwadm commands.

Did you switch off PnP?
Did you try with just the Io320/Irq11 card?

This sounds a little bit like a mistake in the smb.conf file. Did you try
testparm to check the smb.conf file? Otherwise it could be possible that
your samba server is not the master browser for your domain.

Hi,

older versions of samba (and sometimes newer versions ??) cannot be
seen by WINxx without a first (initial ??) connect.
Don't look for the linux-machine, just try to connect to a filesystem
on the linux-server:
e.g. open explorer, menu network connection, select a letter for the drive,
and connect it manually to your linux-server:
    networkdrive: //linux-server/tmp

If you have still problems, increase debug-level (smbd -d 2, I suppose ??)
and have a look at the logfiles.

After lurking in this newsgroup for a while, I was able to set up my
linux/win98 home network except for one problem.
In my smb.conf file I have made a public directory. One win98 machine
can get there just fine. The other win98 machine gets a "not

Any ideas?

Subject: eth0 IRQ conflict choices
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 15:45:58 GMT

I am running RedHat 5.0, and I am trying to configure for a 3com Etherlink III
ISA 3c509B-TPO. I was able to re-compile the kernel and modules and make LILO
happy, but I have a conflict on IRQ 10 with my SCSI card.

As I understand things I have two major choices:

1. Make a windoze boot disk, and run the utilites to disable PNP, then
configure the card manually to avoid the conflict.

2. Upgrade the 3c509.c program to the latest version which supports the:
   ether= ...   command as a LILO instruction.

I am inclined to take choice #2, and I have gotten the new source for the
driver, but I don't know how to make LILO swallow the ether= syntax. Where
does this go? Do I need to upgrade LILO, or other parts of the OS for this
to work right? Should I just cave in to cowardly choice #1?

I am seeking guidance on this... any ideas?

Thanks,
Kurt

This is a bug from PAM/pam_pwdb. pam_pwdb doesn't look at /etc/nsswitch.conf.
You should convert your PAM configurations files to use pam_unix_*
(Look at the NIS-HOWTO, section NIS+/login and PAM). Then root should be
able to login. But it will need some minutes and 5 do_ypcall errors, you
need to wait for the RPC timeouts.

I would like to be able to attach my computer (dell laptop) running
Linux to a WindowsNT network. My computer has an ethernet card (PCMCIA)

and it seems that Linux correctly identified and setup the driver for
this card. However, it doesn't connect me to the network. I need to be

able to obtain a dynamic IP each time I boot up (the NT network uses a
DHCP server). Here are a couple of relevant (I think) messages from the

/var/log/messages file:

kernel: eth0: 3Com 3c589, port 0x300, irq5, Auto port, hw_addr
00:A0:24:E2:D1:8A
cardmgr[194]: executing: './network start eth0'
cardmgr[194]: + usage: ifup <device name>
cardmgr[194]: start cmd exited with status1
PAM_pwdb[284]: (login) session opened for user root by (uid=0)

kernel: eth0: autodetected 10baseT
dhcp[447]: no DHCPOFFER message
PAM_pwdb[454]: (login) session opened for user root by (uid=0)
login[454]: ROOT LOGIN on tty1
PAM_pwdb[454]: (login) session closed for user root

I used linuxconf to try and set up the eth0 interface. I checked 'DHCP'

because our network assigns IP addresses with this (I have a laptop
which is not always connected to the network, so they want me to use get

an IP dynamically each time I boot). I chose 'eth0' as the net device.
I left the kernel module blank since my ethernet card model wasn't on
the list. When I pressed the accept button on linuxconf, I received the

following error message:

/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/s10network reload
This commands takes more than 15 seconds to execute, odd
    Left running in background

Can anyone help? I am new to Linux so I find a lot of this stuff
confusing. Thanks a ton.

It will work fine. The only thing that doesn't really work is using Linux as

I have a 200mhz Pentium system with NetGear NICs acting as a server. It
works fine. My Mac has no trouble. Neither does an old 486 with an
Intel EtherExpress16 running Win95. The problems start when I boot
Linux on the 486.

Under Win95 I can ftp to the server machine, and I get transfer speeds
on the order of 250KBytes/sec server->486.

The same hardware, running Linux (SuSE 5.3, kernel 2.0.35) gets roughly
1/10 the throughput, or about 25KBytes/sec.

The IRQ/IO are the same as Win95. I've checked for possible IRQ conflicts,
but haven't found any. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Be sure to do "make kernel" in the ppp-2.3.5 directory. In some instances
this won't move the new ppp.c to the kernel source tree and it has to be
moved manually, but first read below.

There is known error in the file ppp-2.3.5/linux/ppp.c for a pristine
package. Starting at line 3079 in such a package the code is

#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE < VERSION(2,1,86)
#define FREE_SKB(skb)   dev_kfree_skb(skb)
#else
#define FREE_SKB(skb)   dev_kfree_skb(skb, FREE_WRITE)
#endif

Change the "<" to ">=" . Then copy the modified file to the kernel
source directory /usr/src/linux/drivers/net, replacing the old ppp.c
there, and recompile the kernel. RH may have mucked with the code so
you might find this code near line 3079 rather than starting there.

In the past there have been other things wrong that were introduced by
RH, but I don't run RH and don't recall what they were.

You can use (convert) X fonts for use with the Mix X server. I think you
just copy the desired font into a mix subdirectory on your Win box and edit
a file (font.dir?). Sorry for the lame description but I don't have access
to my Win box right now, there is a faq or howto at the mix site describing
the process.

absolutely
illegible (the username and passwd prompt - i could make that out).. and
the system hangs after
sometime and I have to reboot. The system hangs with the chat script
also.

I dont have any IRQ or port conflicts.. I think that I dont have the
right init and connect strings for my modem. I would appreciate any
help.

thanks
Partha
