Has anyone been able to setup automount to mount a Win98 drive
off another machine? I've got smbmount running no problem, but
I'd like to take it to the next step with automounting. I've
got mount-2.8a, but when if forks the smbmount process, it
doesn't provide the appropriate command line. Should mount
or smbmount be modified to be more compatible or is automount
somehow able to handle smb mount?

Thanks,

Daniel

I have configured Linux SAMBA to be a member of a domain where I have a
Windows NT Domain server on the LAN. For testing purposes, I have shared
/tmp as available to all. When I try to connect to SAMBA from a Windows 98
machine that is logged on to the same NT Domain, it asks me for a password.

Any way to get SAMBA to trust the NT Domain?

I basically have demand dialing and ipmasq working, but I've noticed
something odd. When I echo $1 to a file from request-route, it shows an
address like xxx.yyy.zzz where the first (high order) byte portion of the
address is missing. Is this normal? Is there something I need to fix?

I don't worry. It's just an interesting data point. If I see someone
make repeated attempts I forward the log file entries along with
a complaint to their ISP; I figure if they're poking at my system they're
probably actively trying to get into other systems, too.

I wonder...I never thought about it before, but does going through
a proxy server mask your address?

Ipchains?

/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j DENY -s 0.0.0.0/0 -d icq.mirabilis.com

Assuming the boxes forward their stuff through the linux box. And
repeat that line replacing icq.mirabilis.com with the names of the icq

don't you need to export IPADDR to the environment.

setenv IPADDR yadayada for csh or tcsh
export IPADDR=yadayada for sh, ksh, or bash

Not the same thing. The "modem sharing" alluded to here refers to the
capability that
allows software to see a modem on a remote host as a local modem. I'm
not aware of anything on Linux that does this.

My Redhat 5.2 box is acting as a ppp and pop3 server. If a dialup
connection is aborted by the user midway through the handshake, the Supra
Express 56K external modem that is connected to cua0 is not being reset.
If you attempt to dial into the modem again, the modem will not pick up.
It will just ring and ring. Any ideas why?

Then to verify I run cat practice and view the text line. Then I enter
"chmod +x practice" without the quotes. This should create an executable

this time and time, but can't find what I'm doing wrong. I even started

executable. Any ideas??

Your local directory probably isn't in your path.
Add . to your path or execute it like this:

Actually, I try to avoid them even getting as far as being denied
by telnetd. I would rather have ipchains DENY the connection attempt
(this takes a few seconds/attempt). I basically have all incoming
traffic sent to the bit bucket. As an added measure, I still try
to keep the system as secure as possible (ie few login accounts, few
daemons running, etc), but two layers of defence are better than one.

However, from your logs, it doesn't look like serious attempts yet.
If someone is going at 3 or 4 ports from the same source address, I
would go after them... One connect attempt can be written off as
mistaken identity (eg their friend used to have that IP last week).

Subject: really slow 100Mb ethernet
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 21:45:54 GMT

Hello, everybody. I'm having yet another problem with my network, and I hope
someone can give me some hint's here. The problem being: My lan is composed
of several win9x, NT, IRIX's and a Linux, acting as a fileserver (plus other
insignificant thingies). The setup is pure 100Mb, i.e. no switches. Now, the
transfer rates between any 2 machines on the lan, excluding the Linux box, is
in the range of 1-5 MB/sec, but all transfer to and from the Linux box is ca.
200-300 KB/sec. Now obviously this is connection where speed is most wanted,
being a file server 'n all. I've been monitoring this group for a few days
now, looking for hints, but to no avail. Here's the setup of my box, and what
I've done so far: Compaq prosignia 200, bunch of ram/disk space, RH 5.2
(kernel 2.0.36), eth0 is a integrated netelligent 10/100 (tlan.o version 1.0)

* Double checked/changed all hubs and cables to and from the patient. *
Made sure neither routed nor gated are running * Forced full duplex / 100 Mb
on the NIC (just in case) * Ping-ed across the network 'till I was blue in
the face; no packet loss (even with sizes up to 512 bytes), no duplicates,
ever! * Checked for shared/overlapping irq/io * Checked ad nauseum
broadcast addresses, routing tables, etc. etc. you just nslookup it, I've
done it :p

One thing which I don't understand (well, there are more then one, but who's
counting :) is the frame errors I'm seeing when I ifconfig the nic:

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:73162 errors:387 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:387
TX packets:60522 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:7962
Interrupt:9 Base address:0x6480

What do these mean? Is there cause for alarm? (Note, these numbers are after
ca. 4 hrs of very little activity)

So the what I'm praying, nay, _begging_ for is anything not mentioned here, to
get me started on something.
Has anyone of you had any experience with this type of nic in a 100Mb
environment?
Is there a way to detect where the lag is (bad driver, faulty hardware, kernel
to busy n' can't be bothered, whatever).

I'm on my knees here folk's and I'm begging for clues, and it's really
humiliating. Any thoughts, however remotely plausible, however far fetched,
however utterly silly or even irrelevant, please, please, oh please.........

Network Address Translationto certain hosts on my inside network. For
instance, the IP to the world would be 206.247.11.8, but it would really
be a static mapping to 192.178.10.1 (or some other non-routable IP
address). My question is: Are there any tools to make this happen?
Could you use IP Masquerade in a special way?

i would think that this would work (assuming eth0 is your external
interface):

ipfwadm -F masq -S 206.247.11.8 -D 192.178.10.1 -W eth0

there's also a utility called ipnatadm that you could look for

personally, i'd stick with ipfwadm

btw, it's ipchains for 2.2+ kernels

Hello ive been tinkering around with my win95 box and my linux box for sometime now
and it always seems like im having 'quirky' little problems. Right now im having a
strange thing happen where
i can connect and ping with both through everything except when i try to connect
through my 'netbroke neighborhood' window. i usually use this cause my monitor for
linux isnt so much to be desired so i usually
look at files on ym win95 machine. Anyways when i try to connect i get a strange error
that i cant quite figure out. it looks like it identifies teh computer fine cause its
name is correct and everything but when i try and
connect i get this error:

//Mothra is not accessible

The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly and try
again.

so i tried setting up a new share(one for each machine) to no avail. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Burke
