Amazingly enough, the Windows-only technician at UUNet tech support just
told me I wasn't entitled to know whether UUNet's routers used sync or
async PPP. He also said they only had one other customer that used Unix,
and that "nobody at UUNet knows kermit." Sigh.

So does anybody out there use Linux with UUnet?

If you are just running one net behind the router, and you compile with
"optimize as a router" you are unlikely to have problems, at least not
to notice. The bandwidth should handle T1 or even E1 (2.05Mb) and I'm
not sure what cable bandwidth is these days.

Don't decide you should have print/fileserver/backup/DNS on this machine

Keep your firewalling simple! I would flat reject any packet from the
cable open a socket (see -y) and call that a firewall. You really want
to drop ICMP redirects, too, not sure off the top of my head how to do
that and still let ping work...

Hello,

I have tried the above and it does not work for my setup. Keep in
mind that I have three network connections (work and 2 ISP's) so I
must use the "name" parameter in pppd. Any time I attempt to set the
userid of the script that launches ppp and try the script from a user
other than root I receive the message that the name option only works
when the user is root.

Does anyone know of a work around to this type of problem besides
the sudo option? I have just recently installed sudo and it does work
but what I would like to be able to do is to create user accounts that
dial into what ever network I specify when I log in. I am attempting
to automate the connection so that my wife will be able to use linux
without linux getting in her way.

Cheers

group,

I'm trying to set up a PostgreSQL server under RedHat 5.2 (intel) and having
a lot of problems. I installed from the RPM, and I'm not sure that it got
everything. It's telling me that it can't connect to "template1" and when I
go to look for "template1" it's nowhere to be found.

I'm not sure that it's starting up, because if I do a "top" or "netstat", I
can't see it anywhere in the list.

When I log in and type "postmaster" I get this...
_____
[doug@gorf doug]$ postmaster
postmaster does not know where to find the database system data. You must
specify the directory that contains the database system either by specifying
the -D invocation option or by setting the PGDATA environment variable.

No data directory -- can't proceed.
_____

I decided to dig a little deeper, and ended up in the contrib directory of
the documentation. I found there a "postgres.init" file which I proceeded to
execute. The results were less than helpfull...

_____
[doug@gorf linux]$ ./postgres.init start
Starting postgres: Password:
su: incorrect password
postmaster []
_____

I didn't know that I needed a password?

psql was my next attempt, as I thought that maby it COULD be running, and me
not know it.
_____
[doug@gorf linux]$ psql
Connection to database 'doug' failed.
connectDB() failed: Is the postmaster running and accepting connections at
'UNIX
 Socket' on port '5432'?
_____

Nope.....

anyone have any ideas?????

Nope, OpenDos uses a Novell client, with IPX/SPX. But there are some

The problem seems to lie with the setup. I would suggest going through the
postgreSQL manuals. You can find more information at
http://www.postgresql.org//

>From the information here, it seems you don't have the environment setup for
postgreSQL. Also, you may not have a database administrator account setup
(usually you create one called postgres). The manual will guide you through
this. It is also a good idea to create a separate account. Don't run
postgreSQL as root as this creates a possible security hole in your system.

The account should have environment variables setup for postgreSQL - such as
where to find data and so on. I give an example that I have in the postgres
profile.

PATH=${PATH}:/opt/pgsql/bin
MANPATH=${MANPATH}:/opt/pgsql/man
PGLIB=/opt/pgsql/lib
PGDATA=/opt/pgsql/data
export PGLIB PGDATA MANPATH

You would need to find out where your installation has placed the postgreSQL
directories and modify my example as necessary.

Having set this up, and if running postmaster does not work, then you probably
need to initialise the system. To do this, you need to run initdb.

If you then run postmaster (preferably in the background), it should start up
ok. The recommendation is generally:

nohup postmaster -S -i >> /opt/pgsql/server.log 2>&1 &

or something like that - so you get an server log from postmaster.

postmaster is the postgreSQL 'listener'. Running with the '-i' option means
that you can access it over a network (e.g. Connect to it via ODBC). Refer to
the man page for more information.

Without postmaster running, you will not be able to connect to a postgreSQL
database (psql is a simple frontend that allows you to do things like
maintenance, simple queries and that kind of thing; like Oracle's svrmgrl)

Please look through the postgreSQL administrator's guide as this covers in
greater depth the setup and care for your postgreSQL installation.

Best regards,

JonB.

P.S. This isn't really a networking question. :)

possibly tcpd is not set up to allow you to connect from a remote machine.

Check hosts.allow and hosts.deny

man pages
man tcpd
man hosts_access
man hosts_options

note that redhat and slackware linux ship with a sligtly defective hosts.deny file.
The deny part works, but the notification part
doesn't work. after the ALL : ALL keywords, you might need to put the keyword "spawn"
before the shell command you want executed
(usually piping the results of safe_finger to the mailer)

/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_cuseeme.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_vdolive.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_quake.o
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -p deny
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
/sbin/route add -net 192.168.0.0

But the next to last line fails with the error I showed above.

The only way I can get ip-forwarding to work is to type

ipfwadm -F -p masquerade

AAAARRHHHHH........I don't think I want this like this..

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Christopher
