Subject: (Really) Kill a Process
Hi,
simple problem: How can I -definitely- kill a process. Sometimes even
kill -9 doesn't work.
A bit more precise: e.g. my netscape sometimes shows kind of strange
behaviour and doesn't react on anything anymore. If I do a 'kill -9 PID'
nothing seems to happen (same with -15, of course). The only way to
really kill the process, seems to be a reboot.
By the way, the process seems to use none of the recources (CPU,
memory), looks like a sleeping proc. (but I need to kill it, because it
uses my POP3-server on another machine, but that's not the point)
Any suggestions ?
thanks,
cr
PS
I don't think it's important, but I use SUSE6.1, on a 2xPII266 Machine
with 128M memory.

Subject: pppd error when trying to use diald
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 17:06:17 -0400
I have been trying for quite some time to get demand dialing to work and
keep running into new problems but I think that I am close but now I get the
following error.
pppd[1065]: Protocol Reject for unsupported protocol 0x7263.
My pppd scripts works perfectly and the masquerading for my network as long
as I manually bring the connection up. As soon as I have diald running it
dials and then fails to connect successfully because of the above error.
The other issue that I have with diald is that if I add proxyarp to the
diald.conf file then the connection only attempts to come up when there is a
request (the way it should be working). If I remove proxyarp from
diald.conf then as soon as diald starts it dials my ISP. It says that it
has a udp request from the diald interface to a random IP address outside of
my local network.
Any suggestions, help would be much appreciated.
Paul.

I'm kind of a Linux newbie, but I think I may have had a similar problem
with my modem locking up all the time. Whenever I tried to initialize it I
would get "/dev/modem is locked" messages. I found that if I deleted the
file /var/lock/LCK..modem (filename might have been different but that is
the correct directory) then all my problems went away. Perhaps something
similar would work for you... But then again, I am just an enthusiastic
newbie : )

No, there is no need to register another domain...
You must add an entry to the authoritative DNS for that domain name,
like:
venus IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (IP of the same machine)
then, if you want venus.fordfamilymarketing.com points to
another directory, you must configure Apache with a VirtualHost and a
different DocumentRoot like:
<VirtualHost venus.fordfamilymarketing.com>
DocumentRoot /whatdoyouwant
ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
</VirtualHost>
Excuse me if i'm not very exhaustive, but it's not simple to
explain...
if you dont know how to configure Apache, write to me.

Date: 11 Jul 1999 22:23:53 GMT
Hi!
I have a linux firewall/masquerading setup and I'd like to set up a time
daemon on the firewall machine. My problem is either
a) I don't know what IPs to set up for timed to look for a current
time
b) timed is self-configuring, but I am filtering out part of what timed
would like to see
Could anyone give me a pointer toward either a time server (anything from
stratum 1 to 3 should do fine) or give me any other hint as to where I am
going wrong?
Thx,

Subject: Slackware ftp problem
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 20:33:26 GMT
Hello, I have a problem with the 'put' command of the ftp program used by
Slackware 3.3 . I built a 2nd computer which I use to run Solaris 7 (its
host name is titan). I have it networked with my Linux box (host name
saturn) using a couple of NE2000 clone cards. The problem is this:
Whenever I use the 'put' command in ftp from saturn in order to transfer
files to titan, ftp tranfers a part of the file but then freezes. The same
thing occurs if I ftp to saturn from titan and use 'get' to transfer a
file to titan. On the other hand, 'get' on saturn to retrieve files from
titan or 'put' on titan to tansfer files to saturn work just fine. In
other words transferring a file from saturn (Slackware Linux) to any other
host causes ftp to freeze. Now if I perform any action on saturn, eg.
pressing the return key in a telnet window to saturn from titan, some more
of the file gets transferred but again freezes. If I keep pressing the
return key in the telnet window, the file continues to transfer haltingly
in spurts until done. I can also use 'ping -s saturn' from titan to
transfer the entire file in chunks each time ping accesses the ethernet
card (like I said any user activity on saturn causes the transfer to
resume). I'm certain the problem lies with Slackware 3.3 since I can use
both 'get' and 'put' between titan and saturn when I boot saturn into
Windows 95.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Perhaps it doesn't exist
in the current version of Slackware ? I've tried changing some things in
/etc/inetd.conf and upgrading the wu-ftp server program, but no luck. The
problem seems limited to ftp on Slackware. IP masquerading and forwarding
also work just fine for my network (the modem is on the Linux machine) so
this isn't part of the problem either. Telnet and ssh also work fine. I'm
using kernel 2.0.36 and I've upgraded libc5 to 5.4.46 and gcc to
egcs-1.1.2 . Both computers have Pentium 233 MMX chips.
Please also email me any responses.

Subject: Ping OK - no login
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 22:33:33 GMT
Hello,
I've setup a Red Hat Linux Server and connected a Win98 machine to it.
>From the Win98 machine, I can Ping Linux OK as long as I use the IP
address I assigned, not the domain or host name.
When I run TelNet on my Win98 machine I can connect OK but when I type
"Login" it takes about 1 minute before the TelNet window askes for my
user name and password. I then get "incorrect login" or whatever.
However I can logon directly on the linux machine. The only user
defined is root
Questions
1. Why doesn't the ping work with the assigned Domain or Host name?
2. Why does it take so long for response from the Telnet "Login"
command?
3. Why can't I logon via telnet when the same user/password woks
directly?
Thanks to anyone who can help
Regards...

Hi Lucas. The D-link 220 will work as a NE2000 compatible. But you have to
know the settings for the card. A floppy comes with the card to configure
the IRQ...ect...I have one kicking around if you want it.

Make sure that you have the pppd option crtscts. Make sure that the
device file is configured with spd_vhi for a 2.0.x kernel, check with
setserial /dev/ttySx, x=whatever for your modem.
If this doesn't help then you may have to provide more information,
things like the kernel version and pppd version, the configured pppd
options, and the pppd debug log messages. Unless you get lucky and
someone responds that had exactly the same problem recently.

You should revisit that. One of the greatest ironies of that war is the only treaty
that Hitler actually honored was his mutual defense pact with Japan. Hitler declared
war on the US in response to the US declaration of war on Japan, and ordered il Duce
to do the same.

It's like a regular ping to ensure you are still there. If it of worry -
e.g. because of idle-timer for hangup - you should contact the provider.
None of these should affect the ability to use the DNS servers. Did you
put the right IP numbers of the DNS servers into /etc/resolf.conf? Does
"nslookup <a_name> <IP_of_one_DNS_server>" work? Can you ping anywhere
in the world or just IP numbers of your ISP? Have you established any
packet filtering rules using ipfwadm?

....You guessed it, DNS isn't set up properly.
Fix DNS, and everything will go swimmingly. Briefly:
1. Set up BIND (that's what the DNS server package is called) on the
Linux box. You may only need to install a bare-bones "caching
nameserver" and then put the two machines' names in /etc/hosts. The
caching nameserver will pick the host names up from there.
2. Point the Win9x box at the Linux box for DNS, via the Network control
panel. Note that Win9x is not very bright about DNS: it can only deal
with one set of network addresses at a time. This is only a problem if
you have a second network interface on the Win9x box, such as a modem
for dialling into the Internet. In that case, move the modem to the
Linux box and set up masquerading. The firewalling scripts on my web
pages linked below may be of some use to you for this.
3. On the Linux box in /etc/resolv.conf, add the local IP number on a
nameserver line. RTFManpage if you don't see a similar line in there
already to copy.
Good luck,

I can't help you with diald but I've seen the kind of Protocol Reject
message you show above. The 72 63 hex translates to "rc" which are the
first two letters in "rcvd". The "rcvd" is the beginning of pppd debug
log messages for the PPP link negotiation messages that it receives.
This Protocol Reject shows up when such log messages somehow get into
the serial link.

chmod-ing the directories as readable to world might do the trick. (755)
However this presents somewhat of a security risk to you.

I have to disagree with you Anthony, the first world war was in the 1750's between
King Louie and King George. The Brits and Frogs were fighting on about eight fronts
in this war. Theatres included India and Micronesia (mainly naval engagements), The
middle east and mediterranean, the north atlantic, the carribean and the colonies
including Canada. In the US this is referred to the French and Indian War.

You forgot:
3. Remote root access is normally denied by default (for security reasons).
Do a adduser and log in with that.
