I have been trying to install a static route with the following command
on a RH5.1 system and get
the following :
route add 192.168.10.163 192.168.1.169
SIOCADDRT: Operation not supported by device
Does anyone know what it means and how I fix it. Does it mean
Ipforwarding is not enabled ?
Thanks

I had a similar problem with oplock on samba 2.0.0-beta5. I think that
it concern only Win95/Win98, not NT4 clients.
The problem disappears if I diseable oplocks in my smb.conf in the
[global] section (oplocks = False). I don't improve the speed of the SMB
server (30% according to docs/Speed.txt), but I want to be sure that my
PC users don't loose their data when they try to save a file to the
samba server...
You can try to keep oplocks only on read-only shares...
Before that, I was using 1.9.18p7 and never had this problem.

HiYa Ari,
grep /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/* for that error message! Sounds like a

Hi,
I recently bought a USR sportster 56k and tried install a ppp link to
my local ISP. I successfully managed to get kermit to connect my
dial-in host (running SUSE 4.2 with elsa 28.8).
When I tried to lunch a ppp connection I got some error messages
regarding bad fcs frames and the connect terminated when detecting a
serial loopback without bringing any IP connection up. After I turned
off magic negotiation I got an IP ready link but any traffic across
the link results in bad fcs frame messages. :-(
Any suggestions or guesses??

LANalyzer is awesome, especially the ability to filter workstations on
the packet capture. Works similar to a packet sniffer, only a lot
cheaper.
I would think there has to be a similar tool for Unix, free might be
another question. I would love to have one if it exists.

I have an i386 RH v5.1(2.0.36) system that can correctly export a filesystem.
On the other side I have an alpha RHv5.1(2.0.36) system that can correctly
mount that exported filesystem.
The problem I have is that some of directories in the exported filesytem
show up empty on the NFS client when the directories are not.
Any ideas on what to try to get this fixed?
( I already tried changing the rsize/wsize to no avail)
Thanks for the help.

Can anyone answer a few questions about this stuff?
1. I compiled a SSL Apache and configured the test certificate x509. It
seems to only work with Netscape. By browsing and accepting this test
cert does that mean that everything is encrypted? Does it also mean I
can use it for non-commercial security or do I need something else?
2. I want to get a CA to sign a commercial cert request. After that is
done and installed will I now be able to support other browsers like IE3
or 4 etc?
3. When I https somewhere, does the fact that the security lock icon on
netscape being locked mean that all transmissions back & forth are
encrypted?
4. If I accept visa cards etc can I just write a basic FORM and put it
in one of my SSL directories? Will that mean that any inffo that was
filled out got transmitted encrypted?
5.When I have a CA sign a cert will I get stronger encryption that 40
bits or does my request have to be compiled first with stronger
encryption schemes.
Please email me any responses.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Also you must make the change in the following file:
/etc/sysconfig /network
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
Actually, you shouldn't have to compile the RedHat kernel. It's already
ready for Ipmask.

Use of downrev versions is discouraged, and I believe that 2.3.5 is

If that 3C359 card is a token-ring card, sorry, you're out of luck.
The only TR cards that work (to my knowledge) in Linux are IBM (based on
the Tropic chipset), Olicom (3136 and 3137), and SysKonnect (in Linux
2.1.x kernels and above). So you're going to have to get a different
card.

If you set 'ipparam' in your dial script you will get the name passed as
a 6th parameter to ip-up. Use that to select the right resolv.conf for
that connection. Note that if you connect inside a firewall you can also
reset sendmail.cf to use a smart mailer. I use dnsping to take a list of
valid DNS servers and convert them to a list of servers in the order in
which they responded (fastest response first).
This should solve your problem.

They charge. I don't know if there's any free dynamic IP address

Don't think so, proxyarp is an option that should be commented away in
/etc/ppp/options . You only need this option if the remote IP address
(remote side of the ppp link) is in the same subnet as the local lan IP
(ethernet). This is (almost) never the case with masquerading.

Subject: Re: PPP, lan, and routing
Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 10:45:54 GMT
Hi Dave,
The short answer:
You can manually restrict the eth0 device by changing your "route" command.
# route del default
# route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
# route add default gw <YOUR PPP ADDRESS> netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1
The long answer:
I'm not sure how RH initializes networking (I use slackware) but look in:
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and you should see the ifconfig and route commands used to
setup your networking.
The comments below assume that there are no routes defined, ie: these
commands would replace those currently in your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 file. You
should configure routing, via "/sbin/route", to define each attached network
interface + any specialized/custom routing + a default route.
Your message refers to your localnet as 192.168.0.x, so try something like:
> route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
You probably don't need any specialized/custom routing.
STOP: If you don't have any other interfaces you're finished with
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1. The ppp0 routing should be setup via either
/etc/ppp/options or /etc/ppp/ip-up.
To setup ppp0 as the default route via /etc/ppp/options make sure the
following line is in your /etc/ppp/options file:
> defaultroute
To setup ppp0 as the default route via /etc/ppp/ip-up make sure the following
lines are in your /etc/ppp/ip-up file:
> IF_NAME=$1
> DEV_NAME=$2
> SPEED=$3
> LOCAL_ADDR=$4
> REMOTE_ADDR=$5
>
> /sbin/route add default gw ${REMOTE_ADDR%.[0-9]*}.0 ${IF_NAME}
and in your /etc/ppp/ip-down file:
> IF_NAME=$1
> DEV_NAME=$2
> SPEED=$3
> LOCAL_ADDR=$4
> REMOTE_ADDR=$5
>
> /sbin/route del default # May not be necessary because IF is gone by now.
As usual there is no warranty on the above statements:)
Hope this helps,
J.J.

I've set up ip masq on my Slakware 2.0.30 linux box so I can share my
dial-up internet account with a Mac and an NT client. I'm using diald to
make the ppp connection on demand.
When I try to use Netscape on the Mac (or IE4 on the PC), I get http error
403, "access forbidden from this server". I've set up the browsers to access
the internet over the local lan and given it my gateway's IP address. I
haven't specified any ports in my ipfwadm commands.
>From either the Mac or the NT, I can ping external sites. DNS works, too.
tracert from the Mac lists every site between me and netscape.com or
sunsite.edu, with my gateway as the first hop. This means my IP masq is
working, right?
So why do I get http error 403? Could my ISP be denying my requests because
it can tell I have multiple machines on one connection? Is there something I
could have missed in my configuration?
