My guess is that eth1 is a pnp card and is changing the IRQ on you.
There should be some errors in /var/log/messages related to this.
You probably need to make sure that pnp of off on the 2nd card and
is set to what you want it to be. Usually best to use DOS based utility
that came with the card.
Althoug there are somethings I don't understand from you data.
What kind of system are you using that has an IRQ 17??

Subject: Eicon DIVA T/A Modem and Linux
Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 08:50:44 -0500
Below is pppd debug output from two connect attempts. Linux kernel 2.2.5
on a machine with a BOCA Turbo 650 (16650V2 UARTs) serial card. setserial
2.15 gets the UART and 230400 speed correctly. I am trying to make a
multilink connection with pppd 2.3.7 using an Eicon DIVA T/A Modem, which
is a single external terminal adapter/modem connected to the serial port.
The unit uses "AT" commands and for the most part should act just like a
(fast) modem.
The first debug log shows a successful connection to my ISP with the Eicon
unit set up for "async/sync PPP" (time/date stamps removed from log lines
to avoid wrapping)...

Script /etc/ppp/ip-up started; pid = 20257
Script /etc/ppp/ip-up finished (pid 20257), status = 0x0
Then in the Eicon unit I change "async/sync PPP" to "Multilink PPP". This
can be done with "AT" initialization commands or by way of Eicon's VT100
terminal config utility. On my next attempt the connection fails due to an
authentication failure. This next log shows a failed connection attempt
after setting the Eicon for "Multilink PPP"...

My pap-secrets file is correct. My ISP doesn't do CHAP; he is answering
the lines on a Livingston Portmaster. My phone company, my ISP, and the
manufacturer of the Eicon T/A all insist that my Linux kernel and/or the
pppd are responsible for the lack of ability to connect in multilink mode.
My pppd options file follows...
/dev/ttyS0 230400
name mylogin
passive
-detach
crtscts
modem
mtu 4096
asyncmap 0
debug
defaultroute
connect /etc/ppp/chat
noipdefault :
The chat part of my dialup script follows...
/usr/sbin/chat -v \
ABORT 'BUSY' \
ABORT 'ERROR' \
ABORT 'NO ANSWER' \
ABORT 'NO CARRIER' \
ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' \
'' 'AT' \
'OK' 'ATD555-1212' \
'CONNECT' ''
When I set up for multilink mode the line 'ATD555-1212' gets changed to
'ATD555-1212~555-1313', although the results are identical with one or two
numbers. The change affecting the connection is based on the change I make
to the T/A's setup profile.
I can connect to either of the 2 phone numbers individually. My ISP claims
he can multilink connect to both phone numbers with a 2.0.x kernel and
pppd version 2.2.x using the same hardware. Maybe I'm looking changes made
to pppd between 2.2.x and 2.3.x that might misinterpret a PAP auth request
and change it into a MS-CHAP auth request.
What about pppd or the T/A would mis-understand a PAP request from my ISP
and somehow make it into a CHAP request before it attempts authentication?
Thanks,
Greg McNeil

Okay i understand, but one more question.
When i do:
/sbin/ifconfig ipp p0 | /bin/grep 'inet addr' | /usr/bin/cut
-f >2 -d: | /usr/bin/cut -f 1 -d' '
from the prompt i get the ipadres indeed. So the syntax is good.
But when i put it in a script like:
export IPADDR=/sbin/ifconfig ipp p0 | /bin/grep 'inet addr' |
/usr/bin/cut -f >2 -d: | /usr/bin/cut -f 1 -d' '
echo $IPADDR
Then i get the whole string back instead of the ipaddres.
So what is in IPADDR when the script executes?
The string or the ipaddres?

For the Compex adapter, the generic Linux NE2000 driver just works fine. You
might need to program the card's EEPROM with the Compex driver disk properly
to make it work under Linux. You can download the driver disk under
www.compex-inc.com.
I hope this helps,

That was a great tip for Linux newbies (like myself) who haven't found time to
read all the docs! Learn something new everyday ... I've been disabling
services by mucking in /etc/rc.d ...

However, there seems to be a problem if you compile the 2.2.x kernels,
they do no seem to support the ipxripd package. Does anyone know how to
overcome this problem?

If the downstream router is dropping your packets, maybe you're using
IPs that are for local networks only. ie. 192.168.x.y
If so, you'll need to add IP masqurading to your router.
OR
Is forwarding ON, on your router? under RH look at
/etc/sysconfig/network
OR
Do you have a route to your local network?
netstat -rn

I just solved my Samba-not-visible-on-network-neighborhood. It turned
out that my samba guest account (which is used for browsing) wasn't
correctly set up.
* My smb.conf said:
[global]
guest account = samba
* My /etc/passwd said (this was copied from a working machine):
samba:*:406:103:samba:/dev/null:
* But my /etc/group didn't contain group ID 103. Now, I just added it:
samba::103:samba
And whooooo!! - my samba server just popped into the Neighborhood!! ;-)

Try: http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/PPP-Tips/PPP-Tips.html
You may be denied permission to this address, just back up until you get
there.
Try especially section 6, "Using the Red Hat 4 Network Configuration toll
(netcfg)".
In section 6.2, when it asks for your machine name, try 127.0.0.1, and
good luck in trying to wrestle your ISP's default gateway out of 'em.
I called my ISP three times, and each time, the tech support person on the
other end didn't know what the default gateway was. So, I poked around for
an afternoon on their web site, and there, stuck in a nook, was the
number. Is there a way to ask this question so that tech support people
will more immediately recognize what is wanted? Or, is this as blunt as it
gets? >>> Andrew

Subject: Transparent Proxy with Bay Networks
Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 07:38:02 -0500
We have been running a Squid server now for some time now for several
obvious reasons. The way it is set up now, we have the browsers
configured to pull a config file off of one of our servers. The only
problem is sometimes the users discover the little setting and deselect
it, because they don't want us to know where they've been going. Then
of course there is the problem with them installing a different browser,
and not having any proxy server settings whatsoever.
So, we've been toying with the idea of redirecting all http requests to
the proxy server on one of our routers. The router that we would like
to do this on is a Bay Networks Baystack running software version
11.01. Does anyone know if it's possible to do it with this one, and if
so, what is involved?
Any help is appreciated,

True, but why not get in there before they do. Surely there
must be someone either from samba, apache or linux advocacy who
could draft a good argument as to why this report should be ignored
and then submit it to Computing and the like. Computing give linux
a pretty fair crack of the whip (there are 2x4 page articles on linux
in this weeks edition 15/4/99) and will possibly publish it??
Who knows, worth a try surely?

Subject: ipfwadm problem

Hi,
I've tried to compile ipfwadm, but it runs into errors. There are
a lot of redefinitions errors (linux/socket.h, in.h), a few conflicting
types (asm/byteorder.h, in.h), some parse errors (linux/ip.h) and
some dereferencing pointers to incomplete type.
According to the download site, it cannot be compiled with libc6 which I
have installed on my system. The small, required modification I have done.
The problem seems to be in the header files, or isn't it? I hope it will
compile with libc5 (which was installed during system installation
(RH5.0)). Problem is that I don't know how to make the necessary
modifications, so that it will be compiled with the correct files.
Anyone knows a solution?
Grtz, Arthur
