Subject: Setting up @Home
Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 09:19:43 -0800
*** Sorry second post, not sure if first made it through ***
I am running Caldera V1.2 at home and am considering subscribing to @Home.
@Home is provided by TCI in my area and they do not support Linux as an OS.
Also they "require" that you purchase the 10baseT card from them. I
currently have all the machines in my house attached on a 10MB Lan(2 hubs),
(1) linux, (2) Win 95, and (1) Win98. I am sharing an ISDN line connected
to a Win95 machine across this configuration using WinGate.
I would like to share @Home across my Lan and am wondering how best to do
this. Ideally I would attach the cable modem to a second 10baseT card,
which I already own, on my Linux machine.
Is this configuration possible? What will I need on the Linux machine to
make this work? Can someone point me towards a mini- on @Home and/or Cable
Modems, setup/config info?
Thanks so much for any assistance. Stephen....

I have two network card in my machine but at boot time only one is
probed.
I edited the /etc/lilo.conf file and inserted the line ' append =
"ether=0,0 eth1" to force the second card to be recognised but it didn't
work !
I've then tried to use ' ehter=5,0x300, eth1' and it didn't work.
(Always running the command # lilo after each update.)
The card is at IRQ 5, IO 0x300 and it's working if I do remove the other
from the system.
The kernel is not a modular kernel but built in devices. The IRQ & IO
aren't used by any other device or at least is what I think from the
output reported here.
#cat /proc/ioports
0000-001f : dma1
0020-003f : pic1
0040-005f : timer
0060-006f : keyboard
0080-009f : dma page reg
00a0-00bf : pic2
00c0-00df : dma2
00f0-00ff : npu
03c0-03df : vga+
03f0-03f5 : floppy
03f7-03f7 : floppy DIR
1000-10ff : SMC EPIC/100
1100-11be : aic7xxx
#cat /proc/interrupts
0: 274420 timer
1: 252 keyboard
2: 0 cascade
9: 619 SMC EPIC/100
11: 1561 aic7xxx
13: 1 math error
The first card as you can see it's a SMC 10/100. The second it's a 3COM
EtherLink III. I disabled the PnP from DOS as suggested by HOWTO etc.
I've inserted the following to /etc/conf.modules, even thought i do not
need them because my kernel is not modular.
alias eth0 epic100
alias eth1 3c509
options epic100 io=1000 irq=9
options 3c509 io=300 irq=5
Can any of you out there give me some more advice before I do go crazy.
I use RedHat 5.1 with Kernel version 2.0.35
Thanks,

You can use the machine using wingate for your @home connection via
one of "two nic cards" on your in house gateway machine. I'm currently
doing this with 3 boxes, with NT running Sygate (NAT) base 10 nic to
the cable modem and base 100 nics and hub to the Win 98 & linux boxes.
You can run static or DHCP (@home sets up DHCP for you) on the box
running wingate or a Nat. As to your linux and other boxes, there is
no differences between the way you're setting up things with ISDN,
except that the second nic to the cable modem, will supplant the ISDN
connection. Try Sygate or Nat 32 though, as they're nearly completely
transparent, and very simple to setup, unlike wingate.

I am trying to do IP Masquerading with my Linux box. After a big fight I got
the box to recognize two nic's, compiled a new kernel, and now when trying
to run the ipfwadm program I discovered that I need a new version of
Net-Tools. I found the new version on sunsite.unc.edu but I can't get the
tools to compile and install right.

I've got RH 2.0.35 up, running and working well with being my primary
server for my M$ clients - bye-bye Uncle Bill.
I'm connected via cable modem and have a fixed IP and have access to
mail, news, etc and even have web services running via my registered
domain name that points to my server.
I would like to start sending mail from my box but in order to connect
via cable modem I need to provide a fixed (provided by the cable
company) domain and host name in order to get access. My registered
domain name is something completely different www.rvs.com.
How/Can I setup my server to hide my cable modem domain / host
information in the from info on outbound email and have it say it's
from [EMAIL PROTECTED] so replies work.
Then I can have my mail pointed to the same location and have true
email capabilies.
Thanks in advance,

That is very bad advice. When a situation can readily be handled
by ordinary routing then resorting to bridging is not a good idea.
I think, perhaps, Philip may have mean to say IP-forwarding.

PROBLEM: my machine's IP goes instead of the domain name and some of the
people

messages bounce back with "<<< 501 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Sender

Our mailserver is SendMail rpm v. 8-8-7.7-17 running on RH Linux 5.1
box.
I guess I should use some kind of IP masquerading technique along with
SendMail
What should I do and is there a HOWTO for that?

If you want a book on Samba get Linux Network Toolkit.
They have a very simple very step-by-step method for the simplest (read
insecure)
samba shares as well as production/corporate level file serving.

I can't help specifically with JDBC, but does your pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf
file allow the host you are coming from access to the database? Is the
authentication method there (e.g. "password") compatible with the JDBC
client? Can you connect from the server system itself with
"psql -h localhost -u template1" which forces it to go over IP?

Subject: slirp dumps core, why?
Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 03:40:25 GMT
Hello folks, I am using slirp to access internet thru an account of mine on
campus, it's a Sun Solaris 2.7 system, I complied slirp on the system and set
up the necessary ppp stuff in my RH5.1(kernel 2.0.35) box, after issuing the
command ppp-on, I get connected to the host and slirp started, /var/log/messages
tells me the serial connection has been set up, and I can run netscape, ftp,
telnet, ping,etc... The problem is, no matter what program I run, it dies(stops
responding) after a while(maybe 5 minutes or even less), this happens when I am
transfering data thru my 14.4 internal modem. The system dumped core, gdb
indicates that the core was generated the comand "slirp -b 38400" with a
signal xx, which is a bus error, and the dump point was at some function ip_enq.
Has anyone experienced the similar problem? Is it possible that I set something
wrong? I'd like to debug the problem but really can't start without a hint. Any
help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The new version of Bind that ships with red hat 5.2 uses the
"/etc/named.conf" file as the primary configuration. It's pretty straight
forward. This file is read at boot and points to the location of your zone
files. These typicially go into "/var/named/??" there will already be some
files installed. You should be able to almost copy what you need.

I'm trying to connect to the PowerPC server at work from my home

use Seyon but, even though it will connect, I can't get to the login

Thanks Larry. This was a realy good explanation 'bout LRP. I'm realy new on
this so every information I can get helps.
I have seen the rules in /etc/inet.d/network.sh and used the to forward
packets but I thought that I had to use ip-up because I don't have a static
ip so the only way is to do a firewall script that uses the ip adress I get
from pppd at the time of each connection.
Can this realy be done from /etc/inet.d/network.sh? If so can anybody
(Larry) post some examples on how this should look with dynamic ip.
TIA /Jonas

Subject: PPP: how to answer a callback from a NT RAS ?
Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 21:00:41 +0100
Hi,
At least, I've configured everything on my Linux Box to establish a PPP
connexion to my office's Windows NT RAS server.
I'm begin authenticated by NT and ... it call me back ! Yepee !
But now, how can I handle the call back with my modem ?
I've used 'chat' script to establish the connexion with NT thru pppd but I
don't know how to make my modem answers the calls after that..
Could someone post me a script or any other method to establish the
connexion with the call back feature ?
Thanks,
PeP

I have had the same problem exactly. This was because my SCSI card and
Ethernet cards were using the same IRQ.
I solved the problem by going to the BIOS setup, and changing the option
"Update ESCD" to "Enabled". It is available throuhg "PNP, PCI & Onboard I/O"
menu (my BIOS is AWARD). This forces the BIOS to update IRQ's for every
device on the next startup. Then this option goes to "Disabled"
automatically.
Hope this helps.

Actually, I've seen the same problems with the Adobe Acrobat plug-ins. They just
don't work. Everytime I download a pdf, I'd have to save it somewhere on my home
directory, then start up the Acrobat application, then view the pdf. Does anybody
know if there is a specific version of Acrobat that works with Redhat 5.x?

Subject: Problem: SuSE 6.0 und dauerhafte SLIP-Verbindung
Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 21:21:33 +0100
Hallo!
beim Systemstart laden lassen?
Habt Ihr vielleicht eine einfache Anleitung mit der auch ein Anfnger, wie
ich, zurechtkommt?
Vielen Dank im Voraus.
Mit freundlichen Gren
Henning Ahlers

You could try libnet, at
http://www.infonexus.com/~daemon9/Projects/Libnet or do a search for it
at http://www.genocide2600.com/~tattooman/index.shtml for instance.
It has both C and x86 optimized versions of TCP&UDP&IP checksums I
think, plus a whole host of other functions to aid in building packets
from the ground up.
