Subject: Proxy (Caching) News-Server?

Hi,

at work we'll change our ISP. Currently we run our "own" News-Server
(INN), get the news from our current ISP and store them -well, only
selected groups- on our local server.

I the future we'll have to access the News-Server @ our new ISP.

Unfortunately we cannot access that server directly, as we use 10.n.x.y
Addresses internally. Plus there is -amongst other things- a TIS
Firewall in between us and the Provider.

So, my current solution is to use the Plug-GW that comes with the TIS
Toolkit and have that connect to the ISP's News-Server whenever it get a
request @ port 119...

Btw: Do I have to start a different instance of the Plug-GW for each
possible user that might access the News-Server simultaneously or will
the Plug-GW fork itself when it's needed??

However, I'd prefer to use a "real" News-Proxy that's transparently to
the User and -if possible- should do some caching (like Squid does for
our WWW Access)...

Unfortunately I didn't find any while searching. So:

Does anybody here know of such a "caching News-Proxy Server"??

Thanx for any hints!!!

Change the IP address of MachineA temporarily to something else, then
ping the conflicting IP address. You can then arp the address and get
its hardware address.

I'm using RH6.0, and I also needed to load the module for ftp as follows:

/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp

This is before setting up any ipchains. I believe this means the module is
not compiled into my kernel...maybe yours too?

Hi Ricki...

Great - seems I'm not the only one at least. I don't have the data on
the
driver here, but I believe it _is_ the tulip driver, but the card is an
simple NE2000 compatible, Kingston I believe.

Let's see if someone appears with a solution.

Subject: IPCHAINS problem

After several hours of going crazy over the ipchains documentation, I
finally found the necessary example to get
my RH6.0 box working as an internet router on my home LAN (other
machines can access the internet through
the RedHat box's modem PPP link.)
This is the script I'm using:

#!/bin/sh

#IP FORWARDING SCRIPT

/usr/sbin/diald

/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 10.1.0.0/16 -d 0/0
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

It (almost) works perfectly. All my other machines
(RedHat, Slackware, WinNT) can do ping, tracert,
access the web, send mail, and telnet to machines on the
net. The only thing that doesn't work is FTP.
I can establish an FTP connection on any of the systems
that aren't directly connected to the net (have the RH box
as the default gateway), and login, but when I try to run
a commanc such as 'ls', ftp prints
'200 PORT command successful' and just sits there.

I think I recall reading about active/passive ftp mode
and how the relate to ip masquerading. Might
that have anything to do with what is going on?

Thanks,
Andrew M

I have the exact same OS, the exact same two cards, and went through the exact
same problem! I finally reinstalled RH with the 3c509 ONLY in the machine,
then added the 3c905 using linuxconf. The interface came up immediately, and
has worked beautifully since!

I don't know if you can reinstall, maybe try an upgrade with the 3c509 only in
place?

I understand that I have some version mismatch. Can anyone explain me

How did you configure your kernel? Did you use xconfig? Let's say you did, and as
indicated above you save your configuration to /home/kevin/my2.2config. You then:

'cat /home/kevin/my2.2config |grep CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL_CHAINS'
and see your setting.

There is an ipchains mailing list. Check out:

Actually, I just used "make config." After trying to grep out the
CHAINS entry, nothing turned up. That is, I NEVER have the option to
compile in CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL_CHAINS. This is sad. :( Should I have
patched the kernel to include this at some point?

Subject: Best mail client on dual-boot Linux/Win98
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 18:37:34 GMT

I have a crap dual boot machine (Win98/RH6.0) and I alternate between
the OSes quite regularly, so for email I would love to have a client
that:

- lets me store email on a vfat Win98 (linux accessible) drive
- allows for comprehensive "folder" support, to help organize mail
(optimally with a graphical tree widget for my point-and-grunt fetish)
- handles MIME attachments
- does POP3/SMTP
- has a common interface (looks and feels similar in 98/Linux)

Ok, I'm dreaming. So I'm starting to think mh for the mail storage,
and some Emacs mail system (RMAIL/GNUS/whatever) if I can figure out
MIME handling. Or maybe PICO/PINE.

Has anyone used Adora (I found it on Freshmeat)? It seems to be a Tk
thingy for dual boot, but I don't know how well it handles folders.

I'd love to hear some success stories.

I was having your same problem when I started using smbmount... Try this
instead:

smbmount //ntserver/myshare -U steven -I 192.169.0.1 -c 'mount /mnt -uid 0
-gid 0'

the "-I 192.168.0.1" would be the IP of the Windows (I am assuming) machine
you are trying to connect to... It sounds to me like you are using NetBios
within TCP/IP... Another way to correct this is to install NetBeui also on
the Windows PC...

Sure, I've had that discussion with RH Tech Support on another problem. And
I agree, it seems unreasonable to expect them to help setup, configure, and
administer every single package anyone might ever want to run on their
distribution but when they don't provide installation support for the items
they acknowledge are their responsibility; when their automated support
system is down for days; when the support engineers they hire know less than
you (a complete newbie to linux) that is when you have to question if
they're fulfilling the promise they make to you. After all, RH sells linux
solely on the basis of providing support. When they can't deliver what they
promise, that's when I question their efficacy. So while the actual problem
wasn't their fault, telling their customers how to fix it (especially during
installation) is (and I'm *still* waiting for their support system to
respond again... the last response I got from him was to check my BIOS' APM
settings??!?!?!)
