I currently have a RedHat 5.1 box running on a permenant ip and it has a
samba shared directory up and working fine (on all networked computers
I've checked on campus). I have no idea if the network the linux box is
on is behind a firewall. Its a large university, so I suppose the
network probably is. However, I want to allow another machine (not on
campus) to mount the samba shared drive. Both machines have perm ip's
and internet connections. If someone could give me a nudge in the right
direction, and things to watch out for in terms of security, it would be
appreciated.

hello all,

i have a machine set up with redhat 5.1, kernel 2.0.35 running
ip masquerading. just about every application i use (web, ftp,
telnet, realaudio, aol instant messenger, etc) has worked fine
without any intervention on my part.

icq ALMOST works. it connects, i can send and receive messages
from people (haven't tried it with files yet), but it refuses
to allow me to use the chat feature! it just times out waiting
for the other party to respond. or vice versa. has anybody
experienced this problem or found a way to fix it?

do i need to use ipautofw? i have read a lot of pages that
say you have to install ipautofw to do a lot of the things that
i can already do without it, so i thought maybe the ip masq
support in newer kernels made ipautofw obsolete.

any help would be appreciated (please cc to my e-mail if at
all possible -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

thanks,

Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 03:44:27 GMT

We have just migrated our server here from Netscape Enterprise under NT to
Apache under Linux. I am wondering if there is any way to run multiple
servers on one IP address. I have been told that although no official
solution exists, it is possible. So, for example, the server is x.com, and I
want to have server1.x.com and server2.x.com both with the same IP, 1.2.3.4
while the DNS entry only points 1.2.3.4 to x.com

Is it possible (not just under Apache), and if so how. Please CC the reply
to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I am not a regular reader of this
group. I would also like to know if this newsgroup has a FAQ, because I
could not find it.

Thank you for your time,

I have seen this also when you have the BIOS set for PnP OS = YES (if you have
a plug & play BIOS that is.) If you have the option in your BIOS Setup, set
it to "No" or equivilent.

It can run under Wine. I do it all the time. Just install wine and
use the command

wine -winver win95 -dll -mpr agent.exe

(cd into the agent.exe directory first)

This is weird. How in the world were they able to put an entry into
/etc/passwd? It should be writable only by root. There must have been
some other root exploit which allowed this to happen. The fact that ftp
allowed a passwordless root logon is small potatoes compared to this
problem.

Have you installed all of the security patches for your version of
redhat? Certainly 5.0 5.1 have a number that have to be installed.

RH 5.1 came with ncpfs. verify that it is installed

rpm -q ncpfs

There are a bunch of commands that are included in that package. But
the two you are probably interested in are slist, which gets a list of
servers (file and print) on the network, and nprint, which is pretty
obviously the printing part.
I am going to assume that you have your ethernet card up and running.
To configure IPX, hopefully, all you will need to do is set auto-primary
and auto-interface on

(this may allready be done, check with ifconfig and see if there are
some lines in the eth0 listing regarding IPX.)

setup the interface

bash> ipx_configure --auto_primary=on
bash> ipx_configure --auto_interface=on

rerun ifconfig after a few seconds or so, to give the interface time to
configure. Assuming that IPX is now up and running, you can get a list of the
servers

bash >slist

picking whichever one is your novell printserver

nprint -S servername -U username file_to_be_printed

you will be prompted for a password, if any, and then the file should print.

note:

A standard unix textfile will probably come out stairstepped, read the
printing-HOWTO for ways to fix that. I cat the file through a filter
(the filter is int he HOWTO, a simple perl job, awk, sed, and probably tr
would be able to handle it also.)
There's a primer, hope it helps, there is an IPX-HOWTO in the /usr/doc/HOWTO
recommend you read both the printing and ipx howtos, they will be invaluable
to you in integrating linux with the novell system. The above instructions
are pretty crude, there are more elegant ways to do it I am sure, this is
Linux after all :)

Subject: Cannot ping win95 from Linux
Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 00:35:05 -0700

Greetings.

I have a simple 2 node ethernet. There is a Linux-only server
(192.168.0.1) and a Linux-WIN95 dual boot client (192.168.0.2). They
are connected with 10-Base-T cross-over cable.

When the dual boot machine is running Linux, I have no networking
problems. I can ping, telnet, ftp, etc between both machines. Because
networking works great on Linux, I assume I have no problems with
ethernet cards or x-over cable.

The problem is (of course) windows 95. I cannot ping, telnet, or ftp
the Linux server from MS-DOS window. Ping reports:

"PING: transmit failed, error code 10043"

Looking on Microsoft's web site, this socket error code means that my
TCP/IP stack has not initialized.

I have added both IP addresses, fcdn and aliases to the 'hosts' file. I
am not using WINS, DNS, or gateway. I have the following settings for
windows:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Microsoft client for networks
Ethernet adapter
NetBUI protocol
TCP/IP protocol

Issuing a netstat -r shows no active routes or no active connections. I
tried the following route commands in ms-dos, but still same PING
message.

     route add 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0

also

     route add 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0

Finally, from the Linux server, any ping request to the win95 machine
times out.

The "Networking Troubleshooter" in win95 is useless. If anyone can
suggest some place where I can get information about how to set up the
windows portion of this network, I would appreciate it.

This user can easily connect to his folder via network from WfW3.11.
But he doesn`t from NT Workstation 4.0. He has an account on NT workstation,

While trying to access his folder from NT, it writes "Incorrect username or

My Linux box has only passwd file with encrypted passwords, without

No, but you should change the IP of the NT box. 223.223.223.0 is
the NETWORK address so it should not be used for an individual host
interface. That is why NT won't accept your netmask setting. The
BROADCAST address for the network is 223.223.223.255. These are
standard TCP/IP conventions. Some programs expect these settings to
be the case.

I know you don't want to hear this again, but read through the
Networking-Overview Howto and the NET3-Howto for more info on this.
Networking-Overview will give you an easy intro. NET3 introduces the
ifconfig and route commands to set up your NIC.

> Do I need to run ypserv for dns, what about ypbind?

Nope. these are for NIS, the Network information service. you need
only configure resolv.conf for simple name service.
/etc/resolv.conf
domain communique.net
nameserver 204.27.64.10
nameserver 204.27.64.11

namservers provided by my ISP. you probably already have this setup
though since you're utilizing PPP.

Hi,

I'm busy trying to configure my Linux Box to get a PPP connexion to my

Ok, after a few try I get authenticated to my RAS server and it call me
back.

Yes, you have to specify in your ppp options script "callback [any number]"
(I put any number because my NT server is configured to call a administrator
specified call back phone number)

My modem answers the call. But after a while pppd stops without establishing
a ppp0 device. When I look to the log, I see that it's not a well known
problem like "device is looped back".

Have you successfully establish a call back connexion ?
How did you do ?
