pppd connect 'chat -f /root/erols.chat' /dev/modem 56800

You're giving pppd a strange baud rate (56800). When connecting at 56K,
you should specify 115200, or better yet do the following:

setserial /dev/modem spd_vhi
pppd connect `chat -f /root/erols.chat' /dev/modem 38400 asyncmap 0
crtscts defaultroute

The reason for setting 38400 is that the spd_vhi flag will cause the
serial driver to set the true speed to 115200 when you ask for 38400.

Note that the speeds we're talking about here (38400, 115200, ...)
aren't the modem CONNECT speed, they're the serial port speed from the
computer to the modem (yes, this applies even if the modem is an
internal one).

To see what speed you connect at, open an xterm or a console window and
do "tail -f /var/log/messages" before invoking the ppp script. You'll
see a log of what pppd is doing, including the "CONNECT 49333/ARQ/V90
..." message, which will tell you the modem connect speed.

Phil D.

There are a couple of possibilities here. One is that the linux box's
Samba workgroup isn't the same as the Win box's, which would cause that
problem. Another is that the Win box, even though it has TCP/IP
installed, doesn't have Windows File and Print Sharing bound to the
TCP/IP protocol. You can check this by looking at the properties of the
TCP/IP protocol in the Networking control panel -- File and Print sharing
must appear under Bindings.

Subject: ADSL and dhcpcd (3)
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 12:15:22 -0400

Anyone got Caldera 2.2 (kernel 2.2.5) working with ADSL?
It seems that the dhcp client (ver 1.3.17) is unable to get the IP
address (I have though both Rx and Tx packets!). Moreover, it's shutting

down the eth0 card (3Com509, correctly installed).
>From what I read in other NGs, it seems that I'm missing some files (I
wander why they were not created when I first choose the option DHCP?!).

I need to find out what files are needed/involved in the dhcp process.

!!! New: using tcpdump I found that actually I DO get an IP address, but

I guess dhcpcd fails to write in a file (file missing?)
I also updated to 1.3.17pl9-same thing.

I also created /etc/dhcpcd-eth0.lease (and .cache), made copies in
/etc/dhcpc and /var/db, - no progress.

Pls help, someone!

James,

Assuming that your login id was "foo" you could try something along the
lines of:

who | grep foo | grep 0.0 | cut -b 33-53

if this gives you the correct hostname then

export REMOTEHOST=`who | grep foo | grep 0.0 | cut -b 33-53`

man who, man grep, man cut should provide you with all the gory details
.......

You need to add a route for the address, e.g.

A card that makes the dsl modem unnecessary.

Dont know what "socket" there means. Did you try:

rsh child0 hostname

And got the remote host name as reply? If yes, it proves the rsh for
your account works ok. Then it is best to log on the the remote machine
and try "cat /proc/modules" there. If this does not work there neither,
it isnot a rsh problem.

Subject: Samba (nmbd) eats my RAM!
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 15:03:52 GMT

I have set up a linux/Samba file server for some windows 98 clients.
When I boot up the linux server, everything is fine, until a client
connects to the server. Then, they get access to whatever shares they
are allowed to access, but the nmbd starts at the same time to go into
a steep rise in the amount of RAM it takes up. From top, it shows nmbd
going up to 130-200 MB RAM and chugging processor power (although I
assume that this is due to the overhead for the swapfile). This seems
crazy to me, especially since as much as i try, i can't get the smbd
process to break a sweat. The computer has 128 MB RAM (yes, lilo has
the appropriate append="mem=128M") and a 128 MB swap file. In general,
nmbd continues to do this as long as any client is connected, and even
continues after all clients disconnect. Yesterday it eventually
returned nmbd to somewhat more normal levels of RAM use, when no
clients connected for a several hours. I am using Red Hat 5.0 with
Samba version 1.9.17p4, could the fsync Win98 bug be causing this? I
know that this version of Samba doesn't include a work around for this,
but I wasn't expecting such drastic results. That's why I'm wondering
if there is some other answer. The machine is an AMD K-6-2, and
besides nmbd it runs great.

Thanks for any help,
Stephen Muench

p.s. I'm going to try and get a more recent samba version, but i don't
like fixing a program by blindly upgrading. How does one know that it
is really fixed?

Hi all,

I have installed a SuSE Linux 6.1 on a 486DX/4. I have set up the ISDN
network and the automatic connect to the internet works well.
But surfing with NetScape causes the transmission rates pushed down to 0-100
bytes/sec (not KByte or MByte no, only bytes). Surfing with NetScape works
well immediately after rebooting the system, but with every klick on a link
it is getting slower immediately.

Squid isn't running, but NetScape is configured to use the providers proxy

What can I do?

Subject: Why are there so many slow modem issues?
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 17:06:03 GMT

While migrating from Mandrake 5.3 to Mandrake 6.0
I encountered several problems that I was able to overcome,
except for one.

While I was able to connect to Script and a CHAP based sites
using kppp, the connection was a 1/3 of the normal speed.

A lot of posts refer to possible IRQ conflicts, but I could
find any in my case. I tried moving the modem from
COM2 (ttyS1, IRQ 3) to COM1 (ttyS0, IRQ 4), but this
had no effect.

I looked in the /etc/isapnp.conf file to see if my sound card
had settings that conflicted with my modem, but I found
no conflicts.

Why should I suddenly develop IRQ conflicts from one
release to another? Is there a way to find out what IRQ's
linux is assigning/using?

No bugs have been announced that relates to this issue, so
while I'm tempted to try out Mandrake 6.1 (cooker), I have
zero confidence that this issue has been resolved.

Your linux box is probably unable to resolve the machines attempting
to connect. Add the IPs of the connecting machines in /etc/hosts or in
a nameserver, and it will probably work.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up EzPPP connection for a laptop since 3 days and

modem on the other side. But it dosen't actually connect to the modem. I

used it with and without the scripts. All the modem commands seem to be
fine. the PCMCIA card is 3-COM LAN + 56 K Modem. The dialog that remains

on the ezppp window is "EXPECTING: CONNECT", but nothing happens. And
also the ezppp won't connect to modem the second time. It stops with
"EXPECTING: OK" dialog on the ezppp window. I have to restart the
cardmgr to make it work. I'm running RH 6.0 with 2.2.5 kernel. I also
tried KPPP which comes with RH, even this is giving the same problem.
But kermit seems to be working. It was able to establish a connection.
Any ideas what could be the problem with ezppp and kppp.

Any help is appreciated.
