I have solved problem by installing of DES library.
I just wonder how my system could perform login process without DES routine.
Anyway, I appreciate your help.

The only issue that I'm trying to work out is how to assign a specific ppp
interface to a particular serial port/modem (it always seems to use ppp0
regardless of the number of callers). Anyone with ideas on solving this
problem...your input is MOST welcome.

You should do a make aboot when your kernels are to big.
Or what is better you should make stuff in modules format. about 40% of the
stuff you put in to your kernel aren't used on a regular basis. So modules
keep the system fast. And when you need any you can invoke a insmod an
done.

Anyon have any problems configuring apache with commanche on RH 5.2 with
kernel 2.2.0pre7? I get the following error though it might not be
because of my kernel version. But I have had apache working before.
If I try to configure apache with commanche I cannot save any settings
it will pop up a window and say
Error: Child process exited abnormally.
I uninstalled apache and commanche and reinstalled them and I still get
this error. Has anyone seen it before?

Subject: PORT MAPPING
Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 22:32:35 +1100
Hello all ...
my Linux system gets better and better with the help of this group and to
the detriment of my marriage :)
I am running red hat 5.1 and apache and need to map a few ports so my icq
will work on the win95 machine and the mail and news will work oon the same
machine, through the apache proxy.
I know linux has those ports reserved but i think apache is stoping the data
going through the pop3 and smtp ports.
How do i set things up so i can just point my smtp and pop3 mail program on
the win95 machine to the Linux machine (which has the net connection ) and
send and recieve mail???
any help appreciated.
thanks

You are pretty well informed for some one who clames not to know much about
email.
I davice you to install RedHat for IMAP and POP3. They run standardly after
install. (Usaually I advice SuSE) but I know what I'm talking about.
Your Sendmail it's deliveryagent does the actual mailtransport. When you
send a message it will be send to either a smarthost or delivers it
himself. When a message comes in, it will check if the recipient is a user
on that system. If not, he will check if it is an alias and if so he will
put the message in /var/spool/mail/(username)
Your POP3 or IMAP server wich also runs on that system will check the
mailbox of the person by going to the directory /var/spool/mail/(username)
and will send the mail.
The POP3 and IMAP servers do not depend on your SMTP server. So you don not
need to configure sendmail any differnt for POP3 or IMAP access. Since SMTP
is no postoffice protocoll server.
I don't know if you have a leased line? Or that you have dial on demand.
If you have the latter I advice you to find a provider that does "bsmtp /
etrn". This allows you to create as much mailboxes and aliases locally as
you want.
Any mail send to @yourdomain.com, will be stored at your ISP's server until
you invoke the etrn.pl scripts (standard in sendmail package). When the
smtp server of your provider gets the etrn yourdomain.com message it will
send all stored mail to your SMTP server and delivery agent. Your delivery
agent (a part of sendmail called mail) will then check if all the names
before the @ are users and if so store them in their mailboxes. We use
bsmtp/etrn to get our mail every 30 minutes. And when we are online serving
f.i. all mail send then will come directly to our SMTP server.
If you have a leased line you do not need etrn since all mail will be
deliverd directly to your SMTP server.

I would choose for SuSE. SuSE has the most packages and the best manual for
the novice or beginner user.
I have tried RedHat, Caldera, Slackware and SuSE but SuSE is in most cases
the best choice on second place comes RedHat.
When you think of using Netware 4.10 ontop of Linux (native netware!!!)
then you should buy Caldera it has kernel patches and extra things for
netware 4.10 on Linux.
I work with SuSE now for over 1.5 years and it is great. You should buy the
SuSE 6.0 distribution it is the newest and it also has glibc support just
like RedHat.

You do not need sendmail to get POP3 mail from a POP3 server.
You should download fetchmail it is a very smart POP3 client wich downloads
POP3 mail from a server and places it in a mailbox on your server. Then you
can use Netscape or Pine to read the mail "locally"
I advice you to read the fetchmail man pages first!

Depends on how your POP3 client has been setup.
If your /var/spool/mail dir is empty, it would most commonly be stored in a
home dir in a file called Inbox or sent-mail. Check the home directories!

Most null modem cables are no good. This is how it should be wired;
RXD--------\ /--------RXD
X
TXD--------/ \--------TXD
RTS--------\ /--------RTS
X
CTS--------/ \--------CTS
DTR--------\ /--------DTR
X
DSR--*-----/ \-----*--DSR
| |
DCD--+ +--DCD
GND---------------------GND
The screen of the cable should be connected (soldered) to the connector
shell at both ends of the cable.
So for 25 pin connectors at both ends this is;
3 --------\ /-------- 3
X
2 --------/ \-------- 2
4 --------\ /-------- 4
X
5 --------/ \-------- 5
20 --------\ /-------- 20
X
6 --*-----/ \-----*-- 6

Have a look at the leased line mini howto and skip the modem part.

Well if your ISP doesn't support baseband modems. (These are special modems
that increase bandwidth by adding onather modem that finds the baseband
carrier) then you are out of luck.
I advice you to either go to ISDN with bundeling 128 KB/s of hire a X25
line and you can go up to 2 MB/s

The obvious thing to check is the setup string being sent to the modem, or
the saved setup within the modem. The usual cause for FCS errors like this
is an internal buffer overrun. This happens when the modem doesn't
recognize RTS flow control properly, or the system's serial port driver
isn't set up to generate or recognize hardware flow control.
For PPP, you have to use RTS/CTS flow control in both modem and Linux.
For the Supra Express, try adding "&K3" to the modem setup string, or get
into a terminal program and type:
AT Z
AT &K3 &W
to condition the modem to assert RTS/CTS flow control.

OK. I missed that one, then.

I'd not call this a backdoor.
If you have a system with shadow passwords installed
and manually edit the /etc/passwd file to have an entry with an empty
password string and no corresponding entry in /etc/shadow, then you'll
always be able to login without password. Try it. Add a user manually
and login. I just tested it on a SuSE 5.3 system, using login.c v. 1.4 .
Using an FTP account to actually access the system is just a way to hide
the intruder(s) from the eyes of the sysadmin. But the damage is already
done.
