NT 4 can easily share volumes with Macs, you just need to add "services for
macintosh" in the network properties. This service adds three things; a
control panel applet called "Macfile", and a "macfile" menu to server
manager and file manager. Use the menus to configure mac accessible volumes
and the control panel to config the overall service. It's pretty simple to
use.
The service is using Appletalk over Ethernet, I don't know how you'd go
trying to get linux to route appletalk packets. But you should really not
share a file sys through a firewall, potential security hole. Seriously
consider moving the NT box inside the firewall, or get another NT and put it
inside the firewall (cheaper than replacing all the macs).

Hope this is helpful.

RRDtool 1.0.0

  http://ee-staff.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/ (Europe)

If you use/like MRTG, check out RRDtool. It is basically the
time-series graphing and data storage/management component of
MRTG, broken out and `done right'.

`done right' means that RRDtool is magnitudes faster than MRTG
                                   and extremely configurable.

RRD is the Acronym for Round Robin Database Tool. RRDtool is a
system to store and display time-series data (i.e. network
bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server load average).

RRDtool stores the data in a very compact way that will not expand
over time, and it can produce useful graphs based on this data.

RRDtool can be used either via simple wrapper scripts (from shell
or Perl) or via frontends that poll network devices and put a
friendly user interface on it.

RRDtool should run on most reasonable unices (it has even been
observed to compile on NT). Feedback/experiences to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RRDtool comes with a GNU license. Check:

        http://www.caida.org/Tools/RRDtool/license.html

RRDtool development was in part sponsored by CAIDA, the
Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (www.caida.org)
in San Diego, CA

Nope you got to install ftp server, theres one on the RH CD a RPM
file. Anonftp-x.x.i386 I think.

This subject would probably make an excellent "HOW-TO".

Anyway, I just installed RH 6 on a P90. In it, I've got two Bay Network's
10/100 ethernet cards. The first is set to IP address 10.0.0.5. The second
is 10.0.0.6. Both have a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0. And, I've added the
customary append line to lilo.conf.

When the machine boots, I see both lo, eth0 and eth1 interfaces start. If I
do a ifconfig on either of the two ethernet adapters, I see they are both
active and each has its own address and IRQ. And, I can communicate just
fine through eth0. The problem is with eth1.

The network lights are on for both cards. I can ping the IP address
10.0.0.6 from the linux box and get a reply. I just can't seem to be able
to ping the card from anywhere on the network. I can't even ping another
workstation through eth1.

I'm sure this has to have a relatively simple solution, but I don't know
where to start.

Can someone please help.

TIA,

Charles

D-Link has several VERY similarly-named cards. You've used DFE-500,
DFE-500TS, and DFE-500TX as synonyms, but without checking D-Link's site,
I can't be sure that there might not be two or more cards that do match
or come close to matching those three names. In some product lines,
D-Link has also varied the prefix letters (DFE, DE, etc.). Even if
there's only one board that could remotely match the model number of what
you've got, it's possible there's a mis-formed link that brings you to
the VIA Rhine driver for the Tulip-based board.

I do know this: I've got a DFE-530TX in one computer, and it DEFINITELY
works with the VIA Rhine driver (I'm using it that way now). I once
borrowed an earlier board (I *THINK* it was called DFE-500TX, but I may
be off on that model number), and it DEFINITELY used the Tulip driver (it
was an emergency short-term replacement for another Tulip-based board).

Services for Macintosh won't share over TCP/IP. MacServerIP from

Subject: Linksys 10/100 NIC questions
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 19:42:38 -0700

Greetings,

I have a Linux RH 5.2 PC running as a firewall for my home PC network. In
the Linux PC I have 2 Linksys 10/100 nics and I am using IP Masquerading.
Everything is working just fine, but I have a couple of questions regarding
some messages I am seeing at boot time and some messages that are being
written to the log files.

The boot messages look like this:

SIOCADDRT: invalid argument

I get one just before I see the messages that indicate that Linux has
detected both of the nics and I get another one just after it detects the
nics. Then in the messages log file I get an indication that the Linksys
cards are being set to half duplex mode.

I am using the tulip drivers for the Linksys nics, it is version 0.89H
(5/23/98).

My questions are:

1. What could be generating these SIOCADDRT messages and what can I do to
stop them
2. What is causing the Linksys cards to go into half duplex mode and can I
stop it?

The Linux PC connects one of the nics to a DSL 'modem' via a crossover cable
and the other nic goes to a 10/100 hub that connects to my Win98 PCs.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
TC

This comes directly from the FAQ included with the pppd source file:

========================================================================

Q: When I try to establish a connection, I get an error message saying
"Serial line is looped back". Why?

A: Probably your connection script hasn't successfully dialled out to
the remote system and invoked ppp service there. Instead, pppd is
talking to something which is just echoing back the characters it
receives. The -v option to chat can help you find out what's going
on. It can be useful to include "~" as the last expect string to
chat, so chat won't return until it's seen the start of the first PPP
frame from the remote system.

Another possibility is that your phone connection has dropped for some
obscure reason and the modem is echoing the characters it receives
from your system.

========================================================================

I would suggest you search http://www.deja.com for the above error
message. I would think you will get several hundred hits to look
through for a better answer.

It may not be dialds fault. Which version of pppd are you running?
When I installed version 2.3.6 of pppd, the same thing would happen.
I start up fetchmail in my /etc/ppp/ip-up script and shut it down in
my /etc/ppp/ip-down script. The above version of pppd would run the
script but it would not kill fetchmail.

Five minutes later, fetchmail would want to check for email and
restart diald. After the link went down, another fetchmail would
be running. I ended up with 6 or 8 fetchmails running until I
stumbled across the problem.

I'm just guessing since I am not familiar with your card but most
network cards come with a DOS based software program that will let
you set parameters, etc.

Also, I would look on your disk or look in your manual and see if
maybe there are junpers, etc. that may need to be changed.

Hmmm...strange indeed. One thing that comes to mind when pinging from
your Win98 machine...if that machine is set up to access the internet,
could it be your ping requests are attempting to go through your ISP?
But it sounds like you don't even have any network services running on
or the other PC. Do an lsmod on your linux PC...do you see your NIC
module loaded? What does ifconfig eth0 say on your linux machine? Did
you NIC software install correctly on your Win PC? Run winipconfig.exe
on your Win machine...what does that say? It shouldn't be that
difficult, which leads me to think something basic isn't working
correctly.

Subject: linux-Xkernel broadcast problem
Date: 16 Jul 1999 02:45:29 GMT

Hi,

I'm trying to use the linux-Xkernel-2.0e package to boot sun3 xterminals
from a linux box. Everything appears to be setup pretty much correctly
however I have a problem with bootparamd.

Everything appears to work correctly. The boot image is correctly
tftp'd, the IP and NFS root are found (by bootparams), vmunix is loaded
and few boot messages are printed. After this, however, the client makes
another bootparam request and this time hangs indefinitely.

Reason: When the boot image makes the bootparam request it uses
132.181.255.255 as the broadcast address but when vmunix makes a bootparam
request it broadcasts on 132.181.0.0 which linux will not respond to.

(BTW: if I use an old sunos machine to run bootparamd then everying works as
it will respond to 0.0 broadcasts. It is a dying machine however)

This can't be a problem with the root images as I've monitored the nfs and
the only file it loads is /vmunix. I'm using the files supplied in
linux-Xkernel-2.0e.

I'm using stock RH6.0 with the nfs-server in linux-Xkernel-2.0e and have
tried bootparamd from RH and from the linux-Xkernel.

Any ideas?

Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 21:37:47 +0100

I have three machine's on my home network. One NT Primary Domain Controller
, One NT Workstation , and one Linux box running Mandrake 6.0. They are all
plugged into a 10mb hub (not switched). All my machine sit behind a proxy
"Wingate 3.0" and are routed to the internet thru my DSL router. Of course
my PDC is the default Gateway. I want to set up my LINUX box to be the
Gateway but there is one problem.. I cant ping my NT boxes from Linux, and I
cant ping the Linux box from NT. The weird thing is that the Linux box
running Samba is able to announce itself on the NT browse list's but I am
unable to access it. If anybody has ran into this and could help me I would
really appreciate it. I have spent many hours and have read countless man
pages and various documents. I have re-installed twice. I have configured
DNS instead of WINS. I would assume maybe a hardware problem, but the fact
it announces itself in network neighborhood. I have to assume that I have
configured the Networking portion of linux wrong. Here is what I have.

NT PDC (3c509)
IP 192.168.1.1
Submask 255.255.255.192 (when I configured DNS it changed the 0 to 192...)

NT WS (3c905)
IP 192.168.1.2
Submask 255.255.255.192
Default GW 192.168.1.1

Linux Box (3c509)
IP 192.168.1.5
Submask 255.255.255.192
Primary NS 192.168.1.1
Secondary 192.168.1.5

I entered all the hosts info in /etc/hosts... When I send out a ping I can
see activity between the hosts on the HUB lights.. They just dont recieve
responses. PLEASE HELP!!!
