Subject: Madge TokenRing Card supported ?
Hi,
I'm currently evaluating installing linux in a customer's environment.
Their network is a 4MB TokenRing.
The network card I'd have to use is a Madge "Smart 16/4 AT Plus
Ringnode" ISA card.
Does anybody know about a linux distribution supporting this card ?
Thanx,
Henning Verbeek

I suppose we don't have a HARDWARE problem since no one of the
more than 10 Win-Netware clients have any problem, I don't have any
problem with the net using tcp/ip, nfs or login to netware
under dosemu. To the config changes I think the comp dep HAS changed
something (router upgrade) and a lot new win95/98 boxes on the segment.
(I heard that some special stuff in win98 - kinda loadable netware driver or
whatever - _could_ make problems). I think the packages don't come behind
the router ? I've heard from a couple of poeple (I think in linux-gazette?)
have similar problems.
I don't have any idea anymore...

Perhaps I am wrong, but I thought a hub simply made the appropriate
electrical connections. That is, to my knowledge, a hub does not
deal with packets, only with electronics. (If it deals with packets
and distributes them to their destinations appropriately, then it
is probably a switch. Granted, one could say "hub" and mean
"switching hub", but in those context (microhubs) that's probably
not the idea.)
So, in my understanding, you're *just* as likely to have packets
collide on a two host network whether or not you have a hub.

What's a proxy dialer? I'm masquerading as we speak but I don't got one of
these.
Have you compiled the kernel to include IPMasquerading and IPForwarding and
other things mentioned in the masquerading howto?
Have you used the ipfwadm command to tell it which IP addresses to accept
and masquerade for?
Hope this helps

Have a look at MySQL - www.tcx.se
It's free under many circumstances (although I'm aware your willing to spend
the big bucks, and If I was I'd probably look further) and itegrates
directly with Apache (www.apache.org) ,perl (probably came with your dist)
and php (www.php3.net) - which gives you a setup roughly analogous to SQL
server with ASP pages and iis - only not a scrap of micro$hit code ;^)
ODBC drivers are writen for it,which I have succesfuly used with access, and
the server can be administrated from a windows work station (by downloading
the tool) there is also an NT version also.
My caution is that this combination is out of the box - you'll have to
install sources, read readme's and complie files etc. I'm quite
inexperienced, coming also from a windows and VBA background and have
managed to get it sorted out on two intranets to date.
Good luck

So enabling the bridge functionality and recompiling the kernel didn't

So, on the Linux machine:

route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
This should work.

Hi,
Thorsten, I forgot to add that the netgroups we work with
are very large, we have hierarchical netgroups, of 17,000 users.

P.S. Nevertheless, it works fine on Solaris, Irix, NetApp filer.

Hi,
I have asked this question before in this newsgroup, some time ago, but
no useful reply came. For some time I am searching for a program with a
graphical userer interface, not netstat, with shows me all live
connections to and from my machine. Can anybody direct me to such a
program.

If you get compile errors, I think you are using libc5 ? There are some broken
versions out. Look at the NIS-HOWTO, if your version is know to broken. I think
it was libc 5.4.28-5.4.35 or so.

I routinely use dump to a remote workstation. Just simple:
create a user on both workstations and create your .rhosts files.
Become root (su root) and simply invoke your dump command like:
#!/bin/sh
echo "Tape status:"
rsh -l user_willy tapemachine mt -f /dev/rmt/0n status
read DUMMY
echo "dump level 3 of /dev/sda2 (/ root) running ..."
dump 3ubBf 126 150000 user_willy@tapemachine:/dev/rmt/0n /dev/sda2
