Thanks for the info. This will be a big help. With regards to the GATEWAYDEV
parameter, I am wondering if I should specify the nic card that is connected
to the DSL/ISP? I am using a Gateway through my provider, but the dev was
not specified in the file that you mentioned.

I tried to send this earlier but our news-server had problems - apparently
it never got out...

HELP! I bought a new HP Pavillion system to use as a Linux server. I also
bought the 3C905B-TX nic card to handle communications and RedHat 6.0 Boxed
Software. I have been unable to get the 6.0 release to boot up (it goes
into an initiallazation loop and goes brain dead before completing daemon
start-ups) so I went back to a RedHat 5.1 release that I had runn8ing on a
laptop. The 5.1 release at least boots up sucessfully.

Both systems fail on trying to start the network interface. I need help to
tell me how to configure the system. The card works fine under windoze 98,
but in both Linux systems the boot messages are:

Which implementation?

There are probably a dozen ftpd implementations, probably three or
four of which are in common use.

Good news....

Setting the GATEWAYDEV=eth0 (the nic connected to my DSL modem) cleared up
the SIOCADDRT error messages. As for the half duplex issue, it doesn't seem
to be a problem at this time. I get good speeds across the net.

Thanks for the pointers

any problems (network speed, speed of box itself) if I run the box on a 486

$30-40 to get a new one. Think it would be more advantageous to spend the

The machine I'm trying to list services from? I named the Linux machine
linuxbox, but typing smbclinet -L linuxbox gives me this:

I'm not sure abotu the kit you installed, but the appropriate routed is
available at /usr/src/linux/net/ipv4/route.c

This should be the router for you. Also... you really need to determine whether
this is needed for your system at all. Many folks get all bound up over stuff
that occurs naturally in linux without really needing it at all.

They can ALL operate in non-promicuous mode. Most of them can run in
promiscuous mode.

Is your question: "What current NICs can NOT operate in promiscuous mode",
with the reason for the question being trying to prevent users from sniffing
packets on the network.

I don't know the answer to your question. I just wanted to make clear what

I'm running my Win98 webserver w/ a 1-way cablemodem connection. I have my
redhat box going through the win98 machine to the internet, and can use
netscape in Linux to cruise the web.

Install Wingate on your windows machine, and proxy to the windows machine to
gain access to the internet.

I realize this is backwards to what the Linux community reccomends, but I've
tried numerous attempts to get the internal cablemodem working, to no avail.
I'd love to have my linux machine performing it's native abilities, but I'm
still new and for now this setup suits me fine until I learn the ways of the
penguin.

Hi,

I've just setup a Linux proxy server using squid which I'd like to use as a
transparent proxy server to restrict access to certain web sites etc. I
have a private network behind it on 10.x.x.x

What do I need to do so I can have the private network access the web
normally (ie, without entering a proxy setting in IE or Netscape at all) via
the Linux Squid machine ? Do I set it up as a gateway and get something to
monitor port 80 etc ?

Your help is appreciated,

With thanks,

Sorry for the intromission, but no, it won't.

He is asking how to connect to his NT FTP server from outside his own
network, not how to connect to an external server from inside.

The good answer is: get an utility called ipmasqadm, the Linux
IPCHAINS Howto (which has plenty of examples) and, of course,
ipchains.

Then you use ipmasqadm to tell your Linux gateway that inbound ftp
connections should go to your NT server... the good part of it is that
the NT server will be completely unaware of all this and will happily
log the connections with the clients' real IP addresses.

Bye.

Hate to break this too you dude, but ipchains DOES NOT handle the

Hey RTFM!
And the ipmasqadm is merely a tool for ipchains.

the way i understand it the modem has to have the same nic card used in it
when it was last reset because of the MAC address of the nic the modem looks
for it. so if your hooked up the modem directly to the hub it should not work
unless you only have one machine on the hub, because of the MAC address(
can't be changed either).

I have a strange problem

I have 2 Mac, the server running linux 2.2.x and the other Mac OS 8.6

I have PPPd diald on demand working just fine, and i'm now trying to set up
IP-masq, to allow internet acces from MacOS.

Initialy it works fine (that is after setting masq up). But once my modem
disconnects, i'm unable to use the internet on the computer running MacOS.
pppd (linux) detects a requst from macOS and dialds, but somehow ip-masq
won't allow acces to the internet.

I'm not sure wether pppd is the problem or ip-masq, as it works fine the
first time.

My ip-address is dynamicly allocated from my ISP
Does anyone have the samme problem - and a solution????
