Last try:
a) On a system with shadow password enabled, an empty string in the
password field in /etc/passwd (and no entry in /etc/shadow)
will let you login without a password prompt.
b) You can't login via telnet as root due to the standard security
precautions that prevent logins with EUID 0 (aka root) via the network
(/etc/securetty) .
c) WU-FTPD doesn't look into /etc/securetty . Why should it ? It doesn't
open a tty at all. Therefor, FTPD doesn't reject root logins that way.
Fact: Your system has been compromised. Backup your vital data and
reinstall , using the latest RH edition and the updates from the errata
page .

I'm thinking about a combination of "netstat -na" and "ps -xla".
If my problem is still not clear:
"netstat" gives me a list of open/possible connections.
"ps -xa" gives me a list of processes
How can I link this two outputs together ?

Well, actually this is the default configuration of nearly all linux (if
not all Unix variations) distributions.
There's nothing special to take care of.
SMTP and POP3 do not really interact directly with eachother.
POP3 is only beeing used by clients to read mails, while SMTP is usually
only used for sending post, as well as for general server to server mail
transfers.

ICMP is connectionless so knowing connections won't help.
Looking in /proc/net/rt_cache will show you what IP addresses your
machine has recently been talking to. You can get the "iproute"
program to ake this more readable.
This information is probably useless as only a complete idiot would
launch a DoS attack without spoofing their IP source address.
You need to get the ISP admins involved.

I've never looked into the IP accounting facilities but they may help.
I think there's a way to have entries from the route cache passed to
some user space process before they are deleted - but I may be
dreaming.

Change the defintion of UT_HOSTSIZE /usr/include/utmp.h.
In fact the code is already in there for a new improved utmp but it's
ifdef'd out.
Then just recompile your libc and anything else that may include
utmp.h.
This is, of course, impractical.
More realistically you could probably modify the finger to call
gethostbyaddr() on the value in the ut_addr field of struct utmp.

The fact that machines one and two can talk means that you have most of
the hard stuff done. Your problem is probably confined to the firewall
rules and/or the route instructions. We need more information about your
server's configuration. The output of the following would help:

Thanks a lot. So far in one day I have not been assigned a new ip address. I
will use the subnet method instead of having the dhcpc server calling the
script.
Two new problems:
1. Last night, my LAN hosts were able to get on the net and web browse even
though I could not ping to an internet host by name (I had to use the ip
address). Today, for some stupid reason, I can't even browse. I can load up a
web page by typing in the ip of the site, but that's it. Something to do with
nameservers I'm sure. I didn't change anything on the windows-host (LAN) end,
I'm sure. I used tcpdump and saw that when netscape loaded up on a host on the
LAN, NOTHING came through to either network card. I just used tcpdump in
default mode so it was supposed to see everything coming. So for some reason
netscape isn't even asking the linux machine to go look for things. When I ping
from a LAN host to something, like scf.usc.edu, tcpdump reports this:
mindwalker.netbios-ns > 10.10.10.255.netbios-ns: udp 50
and the overall ping doesn't work. I don't know if these two issues pinging and
web browsing) are related.
2. Last night, when browsing was working, ICQ didn't work from the LAN hosts
either. I'm not sure if that's because of the nameserving problem or because of
more involved proxy/firewall issues having to do with icq.
Any and all help is much appreciated :)

Yes, with 0 packet loss. AFAIR this also increases the Tx/Rx packets on

yes 192.168.1.2 (AKA frodo) can ping 192.168.1.3 (AKA samwise) and
vice-verca, they can also exchange files etc.
'pinging' 192.168.1.1 (AKA gandalf) fails from both other machines.
the failed 'pings' don't give the error 'network is unreachable' (or
whatever) they just sit there. (I left it for 20 minutes and still
nothing)
'pings' into 192.168.1.1 make the traffic led flash on the back of the
machine.
'pings' from 192.168.1.1 don't produce any visable effect.

is this set in the routes.conf file (SuSE distribution)

The first line above, beginning with TIMEOUT, has a space after the `\'
and if this is the case in the actual script, then delete the space.
The `\' is an escape for the end-of-line and there cannot be anything
between it and the end-of-line. And you should have only one `\' on
each line, *except* for the last line which should not have an escape.
If this fails to get you further along in the connection process, then
maybe it is something indigious to PCMICA - which I know nothing about.

This is a timeout alarm on the chat default timeout of 45 seconds.
Timeout alarms are a classic symptom of a bad chat script. The TIMEOUT
in your script should have generated a message and didn't do so, the
timeout was not changed to 3 seconds either.

No. nfs is for mounting other UNIX shares. It's a different program
entirely.
You want to use smbmount.

smbclient is for looking at the share. smbmount is for actually
mounting it. You don't have enough slashes because backslashes ("\")
must be escaped. You do that by preceding it with a backslash, so \
would be \\. But no matter, because you can use forward slashes. So,
smbmount //win95box/c will do the trick.

Hi,
I am new in the Linux world... I am trying to put
Linux machine in our UNIX environment (SUN, HP and SGI).
I would like to set up Linux node as NFS server. It's
working correctly but sometimes i have the following message
in Solaris log file :
Jan 18 11:36:21 Solaris_node automountd[146]: No network locking on
linux_node : contact admin to install server change
When i have this error message, the acces to a file or directory
isn't possible. The very strange thing is that i can see the file
with a "ls" command but a simple touch and/or vi aren't ok. Futhermore,
the problem occur sometimes and not always...
What's wrong ?
Solaris nodes are under 2.5 or 2.5.1 and linux node under
Redhat 5.2.
