smbclient -L xxxx, See also man smbpasswd (required). Do your
pings work with names not numbers? Check hosts & networks.
Not sure about 95 but NT has passwd encryption. This needs to be
matched in /etc/smb.conf.

sendmail hung at bootup for me but once I added:

-> 192.168.0.1 slick (this is my linux box.. during the network portion of
install I gave it this IP address on my network... slick is the hostname)

to the /etc/hosts file, bootup flew thru sendmail.
Doesn't sound like the exact same prob that you have but it's worth a shot.

Good luck

Subject: Control PPP with external switch/keyboard ???
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 14:27:07 +1000

I have this idea that's probably already been done before.

I'm using a dedicated 486 with IP Masq to control access to the Internet. I
have played with mserver, control and diald to bring the PPP line up and
down but these things are all still too clumsy.

What would be really nice is a switch - press once to make modem dial -
press again to bring link down.

I thought if you could hook up a 25c switch to the printer port and then
read its input - then run scripts such as ifup ppp0 and ifdown ppp0.

Is there anything like this out there ??? If not does anyone know of any
software/projects that would have some example code for reading external
switches connected to serial/printer ports ???

Thanks in advance,

Shaun Moran

I think both diald and dialmon need to be running. It looks like
dialmon needs to be running before you can telnet into 7002. I get
the same message as you did above. As soon as I start it back up,
I can telnet back into it.

Is this the result of some previously useful cron job? What is
in
the cron log. It would be helpful to have your top line for
the top printout. 0:27 is that the time and how long was the
fine going ?? was it 27 seconds? If someone has such a process
started for a good reason then its priority may be scaled back or
nice'd into obscurity.

Subject: Configuring system to have multiple ethernet addresses
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 13:18:55 +0800

I am building a distributed number crunching system, in which a lot of
data needs to be moved between machines.
In order to streamline the process and avoid bottlenecks due to
network/IO latencies, I am considering
using separate networks to handle the input and the output, that is,
each system reads from a different physical network
and writes into a different physical network. This would mean that each
machine have two IP addresses
that are configured on separate ethernet cards and can be addressed and
used explicitly.
1. Is such an arrangement possible? (That is, OS and IP support)
2. Are there existing examples of such a setup?
3. The arrangement might involve heterogenous platforms.
I am interested specifically on the possibility of such a setup on
NT/Linux running on Intel (Xeon)/Alpha.

4. Are there existing message passing API's (such as MPI) based on
TCP/IP that support such a configuration.

I would glad to get any suggestions in this regard.

On the win95 side in c:\windows\lmhosts
make an entry for the machine you want to connect to.

example:
123.234.121.23 remote

save the file and run nbtstat -R

then go to explorer and map a drive connection by hand.

//remote/sharename

You could always grab the O'Reilly book on Sendmail. But, configuring
Sendmail isn't for the faint of heart.
With RH 5.2, simply adding a user creates a mail account for them that is
accessible via pop3 (for retrieval).
If want send/ receive mail to/from the internet (you have a dedicated
account?), you'll need an MX feed from your ISP and you'll have to set up
sendmail to forward your mail to your ISPs smtp server.

Hi,

I and several others have the following problem :

- We have patched pppd with the mschap and cbcp patches
- Calling to and logging in into a Windows NT server works
- But if we specify a callback number, the NT server calls us back but
in the (new) ppp link between the NT server and linux the NT server
doesn't react to any LCP Confreq calls and the ppp links times out.

Has anyone solved this problem yet ?

If no, has anyone any idea what the problem is ?

I suspect one of the following things :
- Because the callback isn't handled by the same pppd as the pppd
which called the NT the encryption isn't the right one
- The NT Server reacts so quickly after the callback with a LCP
request that it is received before pppd is started and isn't
recognized by pppd. (I've logged a Win 95 to Win NT with callback.
Is this log the Win NT reacts with LCP request directly after the
modem link is realized)

Subject: very weird NIS problem/delayed login
Date: 21 Jan 1999 21:10:14 GMT

Hi!
We are using RedHat 5.2 on SPARC with glibc-2.0.7-29.
And we are using NIS. Our NIS-Server is not in the same subnet but it
is entered in /etc/hosts.
When ypbind is started authentification via NIS is done
correctly but it takes more than 60 seconds to login (telnet-timeout !).
Even when I am logged in as root and do a
"su localaccount"
is takes more than 60 seconds. When switching off ypbind the
problem disappears. But we need NIS for user authentification.
Tcpdump showed, that there are about 100 request to the
NIS-Server when "su localaccount" is executed.
When doing
"strace su localaccount"
it only takes about 10 seconds (this is the time
it takes to display the output of strace) and then succeeds.
Tcpdump then shows less requests to the NIS-server.
With a little trick I managed to let "strace su" behave like "strace".
So I could see that the function that takes about 5 seconds several
times is called "_newselect".
Anybody any idea ?
Please tell me which dumps/logs you need!

Ciao, TobiF

Robert,
That should never be done to that file. Are you doing things
like this on your systems?

ppp-2.2.0 will do PAP (and CHAP), there's no need to upgrade.

Try

USER_ID * PASSWORD

eliminates the need for configuring a peer (server) name.

If this doesn't work, then look at the ppp negotiation messages, perhaps
in /var/log/debug - it depends on the configuration of /etc/syslog.conf .
Post them and the chat script if you need to do so.

...

: Note that the ISP suggests using "name ktbnet" rather than
: "name USER_ID". I have tried both cases.

The person at the ISP is wrong to suggest using "name ktbnet" which
won't work. Either "name USER_ID" or "user USER_ID" should work for
PAP.

Also insure /etc/resolv.conf is setup. See PPP-HOWTO = very
easy.
cat /proc/net/if_masquerade.
What is the return from the ping? Are you pinging by address or
name?
Can you draw up a sample of what the net looks like with assigned
addresses?
Once connected do an ifconfig -a and see what ppp0 says. Was
your
default route left open for PPP0.
You did not mention what OS your running? So you may not have
the
configuration tools I have so mentioning them would not be
helpful.
If you have /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ipcfg-* and print them
out
and include them.

I'm a relative newcomer to Linux, can someone tell me if there is an
implementation of Access Control Lists on Linux ?
I'm aware of the NTFS project but that is currently still in Alpha.

thank in advance

rec.models.railroad removed :)... actually this is a know problem with
certain M.Boards and the 3c905B. 3COM / USRobotics said on their webpage
that this net card on some motherboards may not reset properly... As I
recall, they are working on a solution, but for present, keep powering down.
