Ive set up a few networks with ipmasquerading on fixed
internetconnections, but now I have to setup a server that connects to
the net via isdn-modem.

the server should run samba to serve a few nt/win98-workstations and run
ip-masquerading to allow all workstations to connect to the internet and
should act as a kind of mailserver also.

is this difficult ?

I want it to dial up automatically, if anyone wants in the net and hang
up after a certain idle-time.
I DONT want it to dial up at every samba-request ;) (do I need a firewall
in that case ?, tips to set it up ?)
and I also want sendmail not to dialup whenever it should send a mail,
but collect mails local and send it every x hours. (and fetch mails from
the mailserver, but this is a job for fetchmail I guess)
Is there a way to autodetect existing connections and make
sendmail/fetchmail using them ?

I dont hope for a detailed instruction here, but I want to here how much
problems this one would bring me, what HOWTOS I should read. maybe I get
one or two nice tricks also that help me save a lot of time ...

Subject: Help: Linux Roadrunner setup in Charlotte, NC
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 20:11:56 GMT

Hi everyone,

I tried installing rrlogind-2.21 on my Linux box (from Redhat 5.2
distribution) using the instructions from http://www.vortech.net/rrlinux//
site. After the installation, my first attempt (reboot) failed for the reason
that cltsmslm.carolina.rr.com was used as a login server (as specified from
the above site). So I switched (booted) to W95 and then run Roadrunner
manager and winipcfg.exe to check for the IP of current DHCP server. I used
the current IP of DHCP server on my Linux and then reboot again.

The setup seems to be functional (the DNS in particular), however, I can't
FTP, telnet, or HTTP any outside host. I can only *PING* outside hosts. Any
idea what seems to be the problem?

Is there anyone there sucessfully installed Roadrunner on Linux in the
Chalotte, NC area?

Any help is appreciated.

"You can't do that".

DNS doesn't allow you to specify a port when resolving a domain name, just an
IP address.

Here are some ideas on what you can do instead:

1) Set up a 2-way NAT on your LAN's gateway, for the webserver, and point to
that IP address.

2) Run Apache on your LAN's gateway [on port 80], and have it proxy for the
actual webserver.

3) Create a DMZ outside your gateway, and move the webserver there.

HTH.

I''m sort of a newbie and have used redhat 5.2 and caldera. Redhat won't

I use my RH5.2 Linux box with ISDN and have 3 Win98 computers gaining
internet access via the Linux machine. I use IP Masquerade under Linux to
handle the data. If you have used a WinGate type program under Win98, I
think you will find IP Masquerade much easier. All my machines access the
internet as easy as if they each had their own modem/connection. It works
flawlessly for me.

As for cable, I use cat5 with a hub to connect all my machines.

I have no idea why you would need a router...maybe someone else can help
with that question. I have 3 Win98 computers and 1 Linux computer on my lan
and all the computers accessing the internet via the ISDN terminal adapter on
the Linux box.

Hope that helps...

All,

My Linux and win 98 machines are in a network and they both work fine.
Now my Linux machine is connected to my ISP. And a SOCKS V5 server is
running as a proxy. When i try to access the internet with the IP Address
through IE 4.0 it works fine. But if i give the domain names such as
www.linux.org browser says can't open internet site. I tried giving the IP
addr of linux machine as the gateway in the control
panel ->Network_>properties->Gateway and DNS as my linux machine and as well
as the ISP name server address. Nothing seems to be working. but the domain
names are accessible from the linux machine. What could be the problem.

Appreciate any help.

Subject: ppp under linux - pap problem?
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 00:08:24 -0700

Hi Gurus,

I have spent quite a lot of time already trying to set-up a ppp connection
on my linux box.
As I have shed a considerable amount of my hair in the process without any
success, I would be grateful
if one of you could just have a look at my config file and debug log below
and even tell me
what is wrong, THAT would be really great. I must mention that I have done
extensive reading
of all the accessible WEB resources on the subject before coming to this
newsgroup, and I
am (almost) confident this is not one of the common ppp pitfalls.
>From what I understood of the debug stuff, ppp insist on requesting pap
authentification from
the server, even though I specified noauth in the option file. How so??!!!
There are also a couple
of LCP ConfRej at the beginning that may have confused the server, but how
can I avoid these?
Thanks for your time,

LMN.

If you dont get any replys on this within three days, then it is obvious
no one have a clue so you should mail the problem to Becker first and if
he doesnt respond then you should try Cox and/or Linus...

in my linux box i am using linksys (fastlan is what i beleive it is called).
Works well, uses tulip driver, and have yet to have any problems. be sure to
either get a hub or use a crossover cable or else use a thinnet design of
network card.

We're running some linux servers running the Zeus virtual server software
and have recently been making changes to the dns configuration. Some of our

sometimes, components of the page, eg images, do not load.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this sort of intermittant

I currently run redhat 5.1 and have telnet disabled in /etc/inetd.conf. When
connecting remotely I use ssh. I now run an icecast server, and for
admistration of the server it uses telnet to port 8002. I'd like to enable
telnet to use 8002 and disable 23. Telnet is really only a security risk on
this machine if it's on 23. How do I go about changing that? Is it simply a
matter of modifying /etc/services to reflect the new port number,
rereading /etc/inetd.conf and starting the server? Or is there something I'm
missing.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

have password authentication from somewhere. You are referring to a workgroup
(GOTHAM) which has no password authentication service, so for user-level access you
would have to set up the Linux box to authenticate. (I've no idea how to do that).

and that doesn't help over at your windows boxes; they are looking for authentication
before allowing access to that printer. I wish that one of the "old hands" would jump
in here and comment on this.

You may have better luck loading a proxy on the Win box and setting
Netscape to connect to the proxy. Samba wont help you get on the net.

Have you edited your /etc/smb.conf? This is where you share directories and
set permissions in Samba. There is a man page reguarding the configuration of
that file.
Also make sure your are loading smbd. If not, then run smbd.
Then check Network neighborhood. Be sure to open "Entire Network" not just
your workgroup.
Using the default /etc/smb.conf you should see your Linux box with a share of
your home directory.

Again, maybe easier to run a proxy on Win Box.

Subject: eth driver installation, help?
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 08:35:10 -0500

I am running redhat 5.2, 2.0.36 and need to compile and install a 3rd party
ethernet driver. I installed the card in the machine, copied the tar'd
driver from the floppy and uncompressed it. But now I don't know where to
put it so when I recompile the kernel I can see it as an option to install
with make config? The un tar'd file made a "linelf" directory with a
Makefile and other stuff in it. If anyone could help it would be greatly
appreciated because I can only find information on just recompiling the
kernel with ethernet support, but I found nothing on installing your own
drivers. Unfortunately the help docs that came with the driver are of no
help either. Thanks,

Scott

Have you added a local net route to the network where your router
(default route) is prior to adding default gateway? If you have, try
adding a host route to the router.

Have you tried bringing up the eth0 interface with/without netmask,
broadcast etc. options?

Have you tried bringing up the routes with/without netmask, broadcast
etc. options, and tries several combinations with ifconfig?

Can I use it as a client or as a server? I want to use it as a client. The

Subject: help on NIS
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 09:23:14 -0500

Hello,
I have been banging my head on NIS for the last couple days and I
think I am near success. However, I am getting an error message when an
user login at the machine that is no the NIS server machine.

do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Remote system error

The error message only appears when the user is logon to a machine other
than the NIS server machine. Couldn't find it in any of the HOWTOs. Any
ideas? Thanks a whole bunch.

Another thing, when the user is at the machine that runs the NIS server,
the user cannot logon, by telnet or rlogin, to other machines that
connect to the same NIS server. I didn't run ypbind on the NIS server
machine since the HOWTOs does mention wheather if I should run ypbind or
not.

Any tips on the problem above will be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you.

Simon

Hi folks. I am trying to get ftp working on my RH 5.2 box (to go to an NT
machine and vice-versa). From the Linux side I can get to the NT box fine.
NT to Linux yeilds a 'connection made' message followed seconds later by a
'421 service not available' message. I've made sure the inetd ftpd line is
uncommented per my Linux Unleashed book and the only thing my RH book says
is to install anon-ftp which doen't help. I can by the way, telnet to the
Linux box and, when I 'open <Linux machine name>' (ftp to self, so to speak)
, I get the same results. What am I missing ?
