I use ip masquerading and I can get inbound connections. I believe it all
depends on what you setup in your hosts.allow and hosts.deny (or ip.allow
and ip.deny, whichever is the correct one). If you setup in hosts.deny
ALL:ALL then no one will be able to get in. So there's a degree of
flexibility there. You can allow some people from certain sites, and
disallow all others.

Even worse, I've found that Win95 will change the PNP settings of
some cards. I've got a Compaq Armada 7770 (laptop) with a 3C589D PCMCIA
ethernet card. When I installed NT on it, I had to first install DOS to
run the config program for the card. A coworker borrowed my card for use
in a Win95 machine, and when he gave it back, it didn't work anymore.
I had to re-install DOS to re-run the config program. :P The moral of
this story is either "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.", or "Don't run
Windows products." :)

Here's what I did to get rid of the "SIOCADDRT: Invalid argument" when
starting networking manually via '/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start eth0'
on my RH 5.1 linux box:
The problem, as someone on the group suggested (thanks! although I
didn't see it immediately), is (I think) due to a bogus default gateway
being defined for device lo. Below I provide the "detective work"
and below the solution.
Using
strace -f /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start eth0
I found that the /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifup script basically
ran twice, once for each of the lo and eth0 devices. I put in the
GATEWAY="xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" line in the /etc/sysconfig/network file
with the intention that this gateway would be used to configure
eth0 via the 'route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dev eth0' command.
What I didn't realize was that the ifup script also used this
command to configure lo, the loopback device, via the commmand
'route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dev lo'. The series of command
which do the work for both devices is below the '. /etc/sysconfig/network'
line, and looks like this:
if [ "${GATEWAY}" != "" ]; then
if [ "${GATEWAYDEV}" = "" -o "${GATEWAYDEV}" = "${DEVICE}" ]; then
# set up default gateway
route add default gw ${GATEWAY} dev ${DEVICE}
DEFGW=${GATEWAY}

(The 'dev' keyword may be missing, I also added that.) Adding a default
gateway to a loopback device didn't make sense to me, so I put in an
extra if statement to only try and add a gateway if the device being
configured wasn't the lo device. Thus the fix to the problem is a
rewrite of the above lines to:

if [ "${GATEWAYDEV}" = "" -o "${GATEWAYDEV}" = "${DEVICE}" ]; then
# set up default gateway
# ATD: do so only for devices other than lo
if [ "${DEVICE}" != lo ]; then
route add default gw ${GATEWAY} dev ${DEVICE}
DEFGW=${GATEWAY}
fi
fi
fi
Now when I do a '/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start eth0' I no longer get
the annoying "Invalid argument" message. The network seems to be working ok.
If there is any reason for preserving the 'route add default gw' command
for device lo, please let me know.

It is my understanding that the Linux networking does not
include a locking demon or something similar. I also get this
message when mounting an exported Linux directory but I have always
been able to mount this directory.
So far I have just ignored the message. This may be fixed with
the 2.2 kernel's, I'm not sure.

You have a dual function card: ether & modem. The ethernet uses the
3c589 driver (I'm sure you will find this in your library of drivers),
the modem has affinity for COM3 only (as far as I have been able to
tell).
You really shouldn't have to do anything tricky to make this work, there
should already be an entry for 3c562 that points to the 3c589_cs
driver... as you really have to do is verify that your card services are
enabled and it should fly on autopilot.
If it still wont run - do the following prioritized list:
Check the README. files in addition to the HOWTOs for extra information
on paramters that are used to ensure that:
1. your configuration will create TWO interrupts (one for each function
of the card!).
2. the card services poll the slots every second (if you dont think the
card is getting started, or if your box freezes when you insert/eject
the card)
3. you are ignoring particular interrupts which shouldn't be used for
either device.

I have set up a house LAN using TCP/IP with a linux box acting as a gateway
for the network. The problem is with telnet and mail. The WinNT clients work
perfectly but the Win95 clients work intermittently. They work for the
first half hour or so and then they stop. I can get them to work again by
changing their IP number but they will only work for half an hour or so. The
internal network is properly set up as per RFC 1918 (192.168.x.x addresses)
and the ipfwadm is configured properly. The problem is only with Win95
machines. I've removed all other daemon's from start up. I have kept squid
which is used for web browsing. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

I have just torn down a dedicated PPP internet connection with a block of
assigned IP addresses and moved the server to my office. Now, back at the
homefront, I have set up a brand-new RedHat 5.2 LINUX system...
My only Internet access now is a dynamicaly assigned IP address through a
dial-up connection. I want to set-up my LINUX box to dial-out on demand from my
Win9* boxes on the home LAN.
LINUX Box= 192.168.0.1
Win9* Box= 192.168.0.2
I don't need to be "spoon fed" the steps. I'd just like to get others input on
how they handle this routing scenario, security considerations, various
options, etc...
Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, I got some email from (Bill Staehle) who read this, he suggested
increasing the MTU and RTU settings to 1500. It worked.

I think I am close to getting my networks interacting properly.
Ultimately, I would like a laptop, running linux, to be connected via a
LAN to my desktop, also running linux, and be able to access the
internet.
My desktop is connected to the internet already through an ethernet
which
uses DHCP to configure IP addresses.
I think I am well on my way. I have two ethernet cards in my desktop.
Eth0 is properly configured to grab an IP using DHCP. Eth1 is detected
properly and configured to be an interface to my LAN at address
192.168.0.1/24. The laptop has an interface, eth0, which is configured
for the LAN with address 192.168.0.2/24. My laptop and desktop can
communicate back and forth properly on the LAN. (I can ping, telnet,
etc,
between machines.)
Now on to the last step. I want the laptop to access the internet as
well. I have compiled my kernel for IP-masquerading and loaded the
necessary modules (as outlined in the IP-Masquerading HOWTO). I have
set
up my laptop to use 192.168.0.1 as its default gateway. Lastly, I issue
the two commands:
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a masq -S 192.168.0.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
Still can't access the internet using my laptop though. Am I missing
something? I think I need to establish a route between eth1 on the
desktop
and eth0. I suspect this is the critical step I am missing. The
following
is my routing table so that you can easily see what route I am missing
if
that is the case.

As the subject indicates, I need to use something akin to Traffic
Shaper, but I need to be
able to set limits significantly higher than 256K in some limits.
Specifically, I'm running
a web hosting service (currently on FreeBSD). I'm now limiting web
bandwidth used
via mod_bandwidth, but I would prefer a non-Apache solution, and would
like to be able
to limit *all* traffic to a given IP address. Most of my users are
going to be at 256K
or below, but a few will be running 500K, and at least one will be
running a 1 Mb
limit. Can I do this with Traffic Shaper, or do I need to look at a
different solution?

Check your /var/lib/httpd/conf/mime.types file. There should be a
line that reads:
text/html html htm
If it only reads
text/html html
then add the 'htm' extension to the list ____/

Try looking at /etc/hosts. Is "127.0.0.1 localhost" in there? If not
add it!
Also, you should be fetchmail from your POP3 host (remote), not
localhost (local)...

If that does not help put the "syslog" option in fetchmail, then run it
and look at your mail log file for details.

Is there a way to VPN to a VPN server that is being IP masq'd by linux? I
have a NT machine on a private IP that uses IP Masq to get to the internet.
Is there a way I can get to that machine back throught the IP masq from the
internet? I'm using RH 5.1.

Sure, you need to switch to a separated hub, especially if your existing ethernet
has 10 Mbit/s speedrate. Since Ultra and Alpha are very fast machines, they
will overload your ethernet very hard, and other machines will not be able to
work correctly on network.
