That was a very poor answer.
If the guy is ever going to be able to configure
his boxes and network he's going to have to worry
about it.

I suggest that he go to the local store and look
up some books on IP networking. Almost anything
with the words "unix", "system", "administration",
"network" and such would have decent explanations
and several examples.

For online refs in no particular order, but all
about networking, try:

http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/IP-Subnetworking.html

That should be enough to get you going. Any LDP mirror

using pop3.

IS there a simple way to do this?

Hi there, everyone! I'm a newbie to Linux (RedHat 5.2), and tried to
configure Networking during installation. No good - it couldn't find my
NIC. After searching the web (and posting to another group), I finally
located the proper driver (http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ - look
at the D-Link DFE-530TX info). Well, it's a .c file. That means compiling,
right? Ummm...what the easiest way to do that? I've never done a compile,
so any help would be great.

I'm just using the standard _server_ installation of RedHat 5.2, so no
surprises there.

Thanks,

Aaron Dershem

Hi,

Why don't you try to read the PPP-howto? If that doesn't satisfy your
curiousity, you can also read RFC 1661. It has a lot of information
which may help to understand PPP. It also tells you about the LCP and
the NCP.

I have a client whom I trying to convince to set up Linux instead of NT
on their Server. They want to set up 5 regional offices each with it's
own LAN, and they want to tie them all together on a WAN. Each LAN will
have it's own Domain. They are wondering if Linux has the equivalent of
NT's Trust Relationships so that a user at one of the regional offices
domain can access another regional offices domain and resources and vice
versa.

Can NIS do that ? Someone else told me that the hosts.equiv file can do
that.

Any help ? Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Yes this is, be sure you have installed SAMBA and let it start automaitcally. Then
read through /etc/smb.conf and it will explain itself. Otherwise read man smb.conf
and man sambe

I agree
Some people are good at art I'm absolute rubbish at it.
I would not expect to paint anything a 3 year old would be impressed
with
except perhaps a door :-)
A friend of mine who is quite intelligent got a PC from a Company about
2 years ago.
He asked me to help him use it. He said he had got it set up ready for
me.
When I got there he had taken everything out of the cartons but not
plugged them together.
I showed him what to do and we then powered it up.
He could not even decide whether he should choose the 'Instore Demo' or
'Home User install'
He is not a fool but what chance would he have of ending up with a good
install?
Windows does have some good points After all many Company Directors etc
have been impressed with pretty screens
( nothing wrong with pretty screens BTW ) so lots of people have
computers.
I work in IT doing support work> We have around 300 PC's running Win95,
5 NT Servers and 8 Netware 4.1 Servers.
Netware is far easier to administer and all our Netware servers have
stayed up for more than 3 months.
None of the NT Servers have.
Linux from what I have read hardly ever falls over.
My own experience is that in the 3 months I have used it at home
alongside my Win95 m/c
Linux has never fallen over. Netscape 4.5 crashed 3 time in the first
week after I installed it
but I could kill it and restart with no other effect.
IE4 screwed up my Win95 box 7 times in 4 weeks so much I formatted the
drive and reinstalled
everything each time.
It crashed several other times needing a reboot to recover.
I put Netscape 4.5 for Windows on it and it has only crased twice since.

My Win95 PC at work often crashes ( at least once per week sometimes 3
or 4 times a week.

I have had problems with installs of Linux because I have not known the
right answers
But I want to learn and am prepared to struggle if I have to.
Anyone who doesn't want to doesn't have to. I expect I will know a lot
about Linux after say a year.
If you don't try your wont learn.

I am pleased to say that
I can now run netscape from both m/cs sharing the modem on my Linux box
I can map and mount the drives from one m/c to the other.
My sons in Toremolinos, Nottigham and here at home can ftp and telnet
onto my Linux box.
I can share my Linux printer with my Win95 PC. It only prints black &
white from
the Win95 box even though it's a Deskjet500C and Linux prints colour.
I don't know what is wrong yet but I am sure I will learn either myself
or with help
from someone in the newsgroups.
I want to set up another Linux box on which I want to set up some home
control
and moitoring software.
I don't have to but as a hobby I enjoy the challenge and
let's face it Linux has the power and lets me use it.

Don't get me wrong I'm not boasting just showing that even a dummy can
learn.

Hello all,
I have recently installed RH 5.2 and am having problems getting
my dialup connection to work. I had the same problems with RH 5.0.
Here is the general overview:

I used the net configurator to setup ppp0 and my isp telephone #
and nameservers. I have the chat -v option on, and kdebug 7 for
pppd. It goes through the waiting for / got / sending bit
ok and sees the leading ~ after this the log shows something
along the lines of

 : /dev/modem <==> ppp0
then out of the blue
 : modem hangup
every single time

Anybody have any ideas? I'm desperate, I've been trying
to get this set up for a week.

in your /etc/passwd file. this should do the job.

Subject: Linux to ISDN router to ISP: sendmail can't send
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 13:15:20 -0500

I've got what should be a common problem. I know I could research it
and find the
answer, but time is short.

I have a private home network as follows:

  bp.home.net (Linux) 192.168.100.10
  tr.home.net (Win95) 192.168.100.40

These are connected to a Zyxel prestige 100IH ISDN router, which then
connects to
an ISP with dynamic IP address. I can use netscape, telnet, ftp,
remote X clients, fetchmail, etc.,
but cannot send mail. The error message is

Jan 25 00:32:09 burning-plasma sendmail[8130]: WAA07607:
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,              ctladdr=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

relay=mail.datatone.com., stat=Deferred: 451 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>...
Can't resolve your DNS name. You don't exist and are probably ... error,
contact your site administrator and have him fix DNS and mailer
configuration for your host.

The only thing I have changed in sendmail.cf is the DM entry, where I
have put in my domain
from work so I masquerade as if I'm at work.

However, Win95 can send mail just fine. There must be a way.

The Zyxel is set up with the Linux box designated as a "server", so that
all packets sent
to the dynamic ISP address of the Zyxel get forwarded to the Linux box
bp.home.net. The
Linux box has the /etc/hosts file containing all the host names and IP's
on home.net. I'm
not running named or anything fancy (should I be?).

My home IP addresses are of course private and not registered.

Thanks for any help,
Darin

You can add a second ethernet device to your router. Then you can put
the Computers
with an official IP address to a net which is not masqueraded and the
other Computers
to another net. The other net should be masqueraded and thats it.

Have a lot of fun...

You should setup your network correctly. WHen this happens it means that your
hosts can't resolv hostanems either via WINS, DNS, Hostsfile and then the last
resort is broadcast.

I had diald running on my NT network and never had this problem except for 1
time, that someone typed the WINS address wrong. When you do a ipfwadm with
full list, you can see wich IP addresss opens the gateway.

I will do this as soon as I can. I've tried adding routes to the routing table
using 'route add XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX but this din't change anything. I'm sure I have
something screwed up. If I'm only using the /etc/hosts file does it even use the
routing table?

Hello

Using Debian, you should be able to autodetect both these PCI cards,
if they are using the same I/O Port and IRQ One or Both may not load.
Make sure you load the proper modules in /etc/modules .
If you know the settings for both cards you may be able to set or
change them in your bios settings under PCI .
I'm no expert, but hopefully that helps.
Oh yeah, try 'modprobe ne'

Subject: Re: Printing on EPSON Stylus 740 very slow
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 21:31:46 GMT

I'd try some different drivers. I haven't looked into the support from
Ghostscript, but used to work for EPSON. The 740 is not a full ESC/P2
printer. It uses a subset called ESC Raster. It is very dependent on the
driver for instructions. Probably, the Ghostscript driver you are using is
only instructing it to fire a couple of nozzles. If this is the case, all
you can do is wait until EPSON and some Ghostscript guy get talking about
which instructions to use.

Or it could be a Samba problem or something, but I don't want to get out of
my depth or anything. I have my own printing problem to sort out...

Good group by the way. Lots of fruitful discussions.

find out if your accessing you mail via "internet" (i.e. POP3 or IMAP) or
"corporate" (i.e. MS Exchange). if it's the latter, than you can access
exchange via IMAP as well.

then use netscape messenger (for both IMAP or POP3 support) or pretty much
any unix mail app you want that supports POP3 or IMAP. alternatively you
can get fetchmail and grab your mail that way, and then use any unix mail
app. i'm currently using the messenger approach--getting mail from an
exchange server, but i plan to do the fetchmail approach if i ever find the
time to set it up....

hope that helps.

Subject: Network at home, please help....
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 13:50:00 -0500

Hello everyone, Yesterday, I downloaded Red Hat 5.2 Mandrake (Red Hat +
KDE) from ftp.linuxberg.com (Toronto FTP :-0) and damn it rocked, my
connection was anywhere from 80 kBytes to 112 kBytes. Secondly, I would
like to connect the following:

- Ibm Aptiva (has HSE now, running Windows98)
- Fujitsu Lifebook 735DX (pcmcia ethernet card [getting one soon],
running Red Hat 5.2)
- Intel PII 450 (running both Win98 and Red Hat 5.2)

I was just wondering, how would I go about connecting all these comps to

Sympatico HSE (ADSL). I know I need a hub, but what exactly would I
require to accomplish this task.

Thank you very much,

Websurfr
