1. network the two machines together. Read howtos at www.linux.org/help
2. Connect the Linux box to your ISP. The gateway must have 2 network cards
in it, one for local network, one for the Internet.
3. Read IP masquerading howto at www.linux.org/help

Does anyone know what the base address and interupt is for the Compaq
Armada Docking Station?

I am trying to configure LINUX to run on a Armada 4120 but have not been

able to configure it yet. I thought I would try the "ne" driver, but I
would need the above first. Windows does not report either in device
manager.

Using scanpci inder Redhat 5.2 does not show any network devices.

My experience using a windows NAT solution (ie ip-masquerading ) is that the
surfing is faster! because the machine behind the firewall does not have to cope
with the modem etc. Sorry I know that doesn't answer your question fully!!

But how would the "backup" dhcp daemon know when to start offering IP
addresses? How does it find out that the primary dhcp server is down?
Because it can't copy the dhcp.leases file (via NFS mount, I would
think)? Unless I'm missing something, it seems to me that these are
equally important technical questions to answer.

Actually, there is a much easier way. On the command line, dhcpd can be told
which
ethernet device to monitor. Check the manuals, but I think you can just say:
dhcpd eth0
to get what you want.

Hope this helps,
Darin

Subject: Using a Linux box as a router
Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 20:55:49 GMT

I just ordered an ADSL line and ISP service w/5 static IP's. I don't want to
spend $1000 on a router when I have a trusty Linux box sitting here. What I
would like to do is set up this box as a router. By this I mean I want to
still be able to use it as a Linux workstation/server, but have it route my
network also. And I mean ROUTE, not do NAT (masquerading), just route.

I am aware of the Linux Router Project, but this turns a stripped-down Linux
box into a router only w/o all the other functionality that I want/need so
this isn't the solution.

I am hoping someone can point out some documentation, give hints, etc. to get
me started.

TIA!

Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 04:23:44 +0100

Hello.
I've have a problem connecting to my ISP using my ZyXEL omni.net
ISDN modem. I've read the ISP-HOOKUP-Howto and other howtos
but haven't come up with a solution for the problem.
I've used netcfg to configure network, and set up a ppp interface.
When I use usernet to connect, everything looks fine, the modem connects and
it all looks ok. (the usernet ppp0 goes green)
But I can't use netscape It looks like I have no connection to the DNS,
and when I try pinging the DNS, it doesn't return any packages.
I'm very new to linux and I don't know much about ppp and networking.
If anyone has any idea about how to solve this, please reply.

to make it so that brie.com point to your IP

Do not where there is a rpm. I copied the driver and recompiled
the kernel. Look around here

I have setup the network with all the info from my 98 machine. BUT I
think
I have a problem in the route tables, because i'm unable to ping the
gateway.

Anyone here on TCI.NET's @Home service and is successfully running
Linux Redhat v5.2 wanna give me a hand? I'll post as much info below
as possible.

I belive my routes are not right, if someone wants to help me with the

it's your host name perhaps?? it should be just c1005424-c

ok I see a few problems

this looks wrong to me try this and I don't know what the any is for(anyone
care to help me here?)

any net 24.2.197.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 24.2.197.1

I am no expert...but if my conversion from slackware is correct this should
work...you had your gateway address in where your network address should go
and your IP where your gateway should have been...be sure you make a copy of
the file before you make any changes..I could just be some insane person

You're absolutely right. I got the 3c905b because I went to #linux on efnet
and asked what's a good network card. I couldn't get to redhat.com for a
few days for some reason, so I never saw the compatibility list. I'm
getting an NE2000 today and I'll try that instead.
