Should work fine though you typically will have to put some extra setup
strings into your connect script - ISDN modems have rather more complex config
options than analog...

I'd go with a 3COM USR Sportser. I personally use the USR Courier
V.Everything, but the Sportster is a less expensive alternative.
If your son does any online gaming, the winmodem will be a detriment to his
response times.

Maybe you have to add something like this in /etc/hosts.allow
on the server.

Subject: php & gnome
Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 10:08:02 -0500
OK, getting past the initial issues in dealing with linux, now getting down
to adding the things we want to make our system viable for real work. As
part of this I'd like to get php up and running. We're using Redhat 5.2 and
I have installed every package I can find that seems to even passingly
relate to php. I've cruised the HOWTO's and the mod_php html pages and done
most of what I can see in there. Used comanche to add the php module to the
list of modules known by apache - and still when I hit a php page
communicator comes back essentially asking me what to do with the php file
(save it... whatever). Cruised the php pages on the net - which also don't
seem to be shedding light. So, anyone want to walk me through the steps to
get this working?
Similar situation with gnome. Oh, tried getting kde from a public download
site and rpm complains about some libraries not being present. Probably the
Troll stuff (I'm guessing here) Any help with the gnome enigma?
One little comment here - I'm finding it to be a bit of a pain that I get an
rpm and it does not include EVERYTHING needed to make the given app work.
Instead there seem to be lots of dependencies. And yeah I guess I can spend
the time to find the things that are missing and put them in, but this is a
serious wate of time. I'm not out to become a ftp download site expert.
Another thing with rpm - is there a way from the gui part of this thing to
do a search and find out where in the hierarchy a thing resides. Getting a
little tired of cruising through the 'directory' like structure trying to
find some package I want to install. Again it's an issue of lost time. I
really want to get to the point where I can get Oracle up and running and
start to build our applications rather than fiddle with the os.
One last question and then I'll bug out - any linux experienced folks
willing to talk a newbie through issues in the Atlanta, GA area? There's a
linux users group that meets once a month down at tech, but I'd like to get
a person to talk me through the stupid mistakes I'm making. The sooner I
get linux doing what we need the sooner we can dump NT!

Hey, I have both the megahz modem card & 3com 3c589 ethernet card working fine
together, If you want to, send me your startup messages (/var/log/messages &
/var/log/dmesg files) after booting up, and I'll try to help.

Thanks, all of you, for your helpful answers! Looking back on my 1st post, I
came across harder on Caldera than I wanted to. I am very impressed with
Caldera's Openlinux, and if it weren't for all the glibc related problems
I've had with it, it would definately be my favorite. I'd like to compliment
Caldera more than complain.
Bob, I've been getting different stories from the @Home support (at
different times) about how static their IPs are. It seems that they not only
have configured client's machines rather differently here in my city for
their service, but they say they've changed how static their IPs are from
time to time. Over the past week for me, some versions of Linux during setup
have been able only sometimes to get a hostname (etc) from them. The other
distributions did not work with static IP during setup, but the same
sometimes worked after setup. E.g., Caldera's. For those times Linux did get
all the info "querying the DNS server," the hostname came in a different
form from what Win9x gets. The last time I spoke with their tech support, I
was told that for a while the IPs were very static, and soon they probably
willl be again. This is frustrating.
At any rate, many people report success with DHCP on Linux with @Home when
the -h parameter is used. People are saying that it was the pre-0.70 DHCP
clients that were troublesome. Have I got it wrong?
At the moment, static IPs are in fact working for me, but with @Home's way
of changing things around all the time, it would be nice to have DHCPcd
working to be prepared for "whatever."
Ronny, I look forward to your version of DHCPcd.
Lastly, I'm not sure what your point is (Bob) about my "posting with
Wintel." (Actually, it's WinAMD. It will be much more LinAMD once Linux
supports DHCPcd, greater Office suites, an even better GIMP, Enlightenment
15 final, and a game just like SingleTrac's Outwars. :)
Thank you all again.
Best wishes,
Luke

I just switched to adsl, but I have problems with connecting to internet with adsl.
My provider only gives support for windows :(
Here is my situation:
Connection to internet is made with a Virtual Private Network and PPTP to connect.
(In windows one just have to use the Micosoft VPN - drivers.)
Any suggestions are welcome,

Date: 04 Feb 1999 13:12:09 GMT
Hi,
I had the same problem. I'm not sure if it is because I upgraded ppp, the
kernel or both. To solve it, start the Linux Control Panel, click on Network
Configuration, click on Names. In Host Name, type whatever name you want to
give to the computer ( one word ). Save the changes then quit. If you change
the name back to localhost.localdomain, the problem will recur the next time
you connect to your ISP.
If you are running Apache, PostgreSQL or some other server, they may complain
about being unable to find the host. Since my machine is not on a network and
only connects to the Internet via a modem, I removed the services that were
complaining using the Run Level Editor in the Control Panel. Good Luck.

I just found out my new Viking modem is one of the WinModem models. I wish
these vendors would own up to this stuff on the box's "required system"
section so we could avoid buying something that only works in Windoze--yet
another reason I want to move away from Win related technology! I simply
abhor having my choices made for me. I will put the Viking in my son's
computer, upgrading him from 33.6 to 56K--he'll love it--and I will still
not lose the money invested in the junkie modem. Ah, that's not true (I'm
just angry at myself for not knowing more about h/w than I do), it's a great
modem, but only for Windoze.
At any rate, does anyone wish to recommend their favorite modem for
Linux/Win use. I say Win [98] because there are still a couple of
development tools I use which do not yet have a Linux port or counterpart
available. Since I make my living as a web developer, these tools are
necessary. With Linux's rise to prominence, I look for a port of these tools
(or a Linux tool coming out with comparable features and functionality) to
be available quite soon.
Any recommendations appreciated.

I have a Linux 2.0.29 (Intel) serving as a firewall to the internet. I have
two NIC cards w/ two IP's. My network is a collection of NT and 95
machines. The Linux box serves as a gateway to thet net. I have the
following line in my rc.inet1 file:
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.2.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
Most internet services are accessible through my workstations (http, telnet,
etc). FTP works using the "passive" mode from WS_FTP pro.
My trouble is with a 95 application called COM/IP. This creates a virtual
serial port and virtual modem that allows me to emulate serial connections
over IP. It uses port 26500.
I am able to successfully dial (connect) to a host, but then communications
stalls. It appears that information is not being routed back to my client.
I have tested this configuration fully on a network with no firewall and all
seems to work well.
I don't know if it's a question of masquerading or ip forwarding or what.
I'd appreciate any help.

Hello all.
I have been running Squid proxy 2.0 on Linux 2.0.35 behind a packet-filtering
firewall for some time now, and everything has been just fine.
However, I have a user who just visited a site that had a Verisign
certificate, and their Internet Exploder 3.02 browser on Win95 gives the
following message:
"The internet site you are viewing uses a security certificate that was
signed by an unknown authority. The page cannot be viewed."
When I view that site directly, through NAT (network address translation).
It works just fine. Is this a Squid problem or a site problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi there
Before attempting the following, I would like to know if it is possible.
I do not have a lot of time for experimenting, about four days on the
outside, so please bear with what would normally be a redundant post.
I would like to setup a dialup Linux server with dynamic/static
ip-addressing for a Class B TCP/IP network, which would act as a gateway
into a WinNT LAN. I then intend running VNC servers on the Win95
workstations. As you can see, I am trying to emulate a Citrix/Metaframe
setup(without the money :-). I have had innumerable problems with NT RAS
in the past. Apart from the fact that it is slow, it just totally bombs
out half the time.
This way also looks like the obvious scalable solution. Today a dial-up
server, tomorrow a dedicated Web-Server providing my clients with the
ultimate in global roaming, Linux Style.

Hi Ken..
Just a thought.. I don't know what distribution you're using but the mt-st
tools in a stock RH5.2 distribution are (verifiably) whacked..
I rpm -e'd them and built and installed mt-st-0.4-5.src.rpm and
everything is working fine (Adaptec2940, HP SureStor).
The stock 5.2 mt-st (mt-st-0.5-1) bombs on fsf commands and possibly
others.
Cheers

Hi Ken..
<br>Just a thought.. I don't know what distribution you're using but the
mt-st tools in a stock RH5.2 distribution are (verifiably) whacked..
<br>I rpm -e'd them and built and installed mt-st-0.4-5.src.rpm and
everything is working fine (Adaptec2940, HP SureStor).
<br>The stock 5.2 mt-st (mt-st-0.5-1) bombs on fsf commands and possibly
others.
<p>Cheers
<p>Jim

They hire out their first two tech-support tiers to some company that
just functions as a tech-support calldesk (for many companies). What
would you expect?
Sounds like Clay finally got to somebody in the 3rd tier local/uswest
support people that actually knows something other than `double click'.
