Dear Friend,
I have a linux slackware 3.6 with a dedicated account. I use Motorola
Ext ModemSurf to dial my ISP.
I don't know why some time the connection is freeze.
The light on modem are still on, but data can not transfered. My
AUTODIAL script can not dial my modem. I think some think wrong with my
dial script and autodial script, because I have no problem when dial
another ISP with that modem.
Could some one show me how to make a permanent connection with my isp.
How to avoid get disconnect, auto dial-up when disconnect script. How to
kill pppd
( because when I use kill -9 processID it's not work)
Thank you very much !!

You mean telnetd (the telnet server)? If so, you should be able to
comment out the telnet entry in /etc/inetd.conf, I think...

Subject: Linux on PS/2 MCA with AT1700 Ethernet card
I've been fighting for months now trying to get my linux kernels to see
the MCA Allied Telesys 1700 ethernet card installed on my PS/2 in slot
2, IRQ 3, at some port number (0x0300 or 0x0330 or something).
The question is why can DOS and Win 3.1 drivers see the card, but not
the linux drivers? Has anyone else been able to get it to work?
I'd like to make a diskless/nfs root boot disk for the box and let it
boot of my server in the other room, but can't seem to find the silly
card. It'd be faster running as a dumb X terminal anyway. :)
Is there a special version of the AT1700 kernel driver I need to use?

Hi,
My computer is configured as router for my local network to the
internet. For maintenance reason sometimes the connection between the
internet and the local network most be broken.
How do I temporarily shutdown the 'eth0' and/or 'eth1' so that nobody
can access the network and nobody on the network can access the
internet.
ps. please don't post the answer in the newsgroup but directly to me.
Thank you.

Make multiple entries in your DNS for the server:
www.yourdomain.com IN A <ip of first dsl line>
www.yourdomain.com IN A <ip of second dsl line>
So that whenever your DNS is queried for www.yourdomain.con, the DNS will
reply alternately with first or second ip address.
This is how yahoo does it, for example. Try pinging www.yahoo.com
multiple times. It should cycle through www1 to wwwX. You won't get them
in order, of course, 'cause other people will be resolving the address as
well.

BTW, you have to wait about 15 minutes before trying the next ping 'cause
that's what yahoo has set their ttl to and you'll end up getting the
locally cached value (if you are running a caching DNS, that is).

It is included on any redhat CD set on the first CD in the RPMS directory

IIRC this should be:
make modules
make modules_install
Even if I am right....I doubt if this is your problem. I would just
use make menuconfig or make xconfig and be _very_ careful to read
every option to be sure you did not miss something. Other than
that....Its got me beat.

The readme (you read it, didn't you ;-) talks about using the root
account. I haven't looked into it yet, maybe it'll set the uid during
execution, so you might need to give it a user with at least permission
to modify the configuration files (if you try to admin via SWAT).

Multiple dots are as well being converted to underscores by Netscape
2.02
for OS/2 WARP.

As I didn't get a very good reponse to my post (i.e Nothing!) and others may
be experiencing a similar problem I'll post the answer!!
Firstly, as a matter of course, I upgraded to the latest 2.0.36 kernel and
went through tidying up the kernel config before recompiling.
Then, I set up forwarding (non masquarading) using ipfwadm. I was working on
the assumption that setting up the routing would automatically cause the
forwarding to occur - Can someone confirm this is the case?

You have specified the crtscts option in diald's config and not
merely your ppp options, haven't you? Otherwise the chat will likely
not be using hardware flow control... (I assume your TA is set to
hardware flow control :-) )

Yes crtscts set in diald.conf and hardware flow control is the default
setting on the TA.
What I am trying to do is to use the BREAK sequence in some way to generate
an alternate login sequence if the first fails ie if Bad Password is
received instead of Protocol: then to go to <CR> login: etc.....
unfortunately the man page is not entirely clear on this point.

Please help. I told my boss that Linux would work just as well as SCO
and HP-UX. I got his expectations up and now it is not working
correctly. If I can not get this working, I will have to SCO on to this
server.
Once a day my Linux server stops servicing FTP request. From what I can
find from the logs the following message is recorded.
inetd[293]: ftp/tcp server failing (looping), service terminated
FTP works well for three to four after this ( 3:41, 3:08, 3:56) and them
I get the following messages:
ftpd[11615]: User unknown timed out after 900 seconds at Wed Feb 3
10:30:21 1999
Feb 3 10:30:21 la200 ftpd[11615]: FTP session closed
Feb 3 11:06:40 la200 ftpd[11618]: FTP session closed
Feb 3 12:48:24 la200 ftpd[11621]: FTP session closed
The last two FTP session close messages do not have corresponding FTP
login from messages.
The server then does not respond to FTP request for several hours.
Is there a connection between the inetd and the ftp timed out messages ?
Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on.
The server is new, running RedHat linux 5.1. The process that is being
used to down load files works fine with SCO Unix and HP-UX servers.
