Can someone tell me why my pppd dies when I use diald. I recieve the
following message "pppd startup timed out. check your ppp options. killing
pppd."
I have tried setting up-delay to 0,2 and 5 in diald.conf. Can someone tell me
how to correct this. ppp works fine by itself.
thanks

Subject: Need help with home network
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 01:28:39 GMT
I have two PC's at home that I'm trying to network.
One is named bipolar, and it is a triple boot NT4/RH5.2/FreeBSD 3.0 pentium.
The other is named skitzo and it is a 486 running Red Hat 5.1 Both PC's
have a SMC EtherEZ NIC with UTP cable running to a SMC active hub.
I can boot both into Linux, both recognize the cards using Donald Becker's
SMC Ultra NIC driver, and both get the cards assigned their proper addresses
and routing tables.
The routes to the local network, the private address space 192.168.1.0 are
setup. The IP address for skitzo is 192.168.1.254 and the IP address for
bipolar is 192.168.1.2
Neither card has any conflicts with IRQ's or I/O addresses (I looked into
the /proc filesystem). Each PC can ping it's own network devices, but
cannot ping the other machine.
Here's the kicker, when I sit at the console of either machine and ping the
other (by it's IP address, not it's name), I can see the lights on the hub
light up, the light for the cable from the PC I'm sitting at! My packets
are getting through, I know it because when I ping flood with ping -f the
light goes really fast, and regular pings are slower blinks.
Neither machine answers the other, though. I have a sniffer and I can see
that one machine is sending out ARP requests, not the ICMP echo packets I
would want. This tells me that that machine can't resolve the IP address
into a MAC address, and it keeps trying to figure it out.
Here (finally) is the big question: Do I need to do anything to make Linux
answer the ARP requests? I don't see any reason why the packets would go to
the hub and not to the other NIC. The TCP/IP stack should take care of
answering the ARP requests, right?
What is my problem? The routes are 192.168.1.0 for each other's IP address,
the mask on both is 255.255.255.0, and the broadcast is 192.168.1.255 for
both. I have gone over everything and can't find anything wrong. Any
ideas?

Subject: Help: RoadRunner Akron and Linux
Date: Thu, 04 Feb 1999 17:40:03 -0500
Hi all, we have a Linux box which we're using with RoadRunner in the
Akron, OH area. We are currently using rrlogind 1.3 on a RedHat 5.2 box
to authenticate to the login server.
Everything seems to work ok after we login...until the next day. I'm
guessing that the authentication server logs us off after x amount of
time and we need to re-authenticate.
I never had this problem on the Columbus, OH Road Runner, and it's not
outlined in the documentation at <URL:http://www.vortech.net/rrlinux/>
so I'm a bit confused.
Our current solution is to restart the machine everyday since we have
the command line:
rrlogind -v -u username /etc/rrpasswd login-server
entered into our rc.local file.
Any suggestions on this?

Hi, all:
I just set up a new Red Hat 5.2 machine, I want to use it as the primary
DNS server for my little network. But becuase my network is within my
company's intranet, I also need to lookup all the machines in the
intranet. I know in Solaris, we can define a DNS forwarder, just wondering
if there is also such mechanism I can configure in /etc/named.conf to
forward DNS requests.
Thanks a bunch!

Be careful with the security....
Then again samba's _sample_ config has stronger security than ur average NT
config...
never mind...

Hello,
Is there any simple way to check the speed my modem is connecting at
when using PPPd?
I've checked /var/log/messages, but it only shows the UART port speed,
not very helpful.
I've also tried running a dialer(minicom) and manually dialing the
number, but the responses I get are flaky at best.
Please help!

Subject: Creating a Linux PPP RAS Server for Win95 Clients
Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 23:15:55 -0000
I am currently working on a project to create a PPP server that will allows
Windows 3.1/95/NT clients to dial in and access our company's internal
network.
This will allow the users to collect their e-mail from the e-mail server on
the LAN and possibly browse the web.
I have managed to get a PPP client to work (i.e Linux will dial an ISP), but
I cannot get the PPP server to work. Also mgetty automatically answer's the
call but nothing seems to happen after that. I have recompiled mgetty with
support for AutoPPP.
I have read several documents on the net (including Josh Gentry's guide) but
there does seem to be a general lack of detailed documents on PPP server's
compared with those dealing with PPP clients.
The current system is as follows
AMD K6 233Mhz + 96MB EDO Ram + 512KB Cache
3.2GB Quantum UltraDMA Hard Disk
USR 33.6KB Sportster Modems (x2)
Software is as follows
SUSE Linux 5.2
If possible I would like detailed info on /etc/<files> configurations and
directives required when recompiling packages or kernel. Note, the AutoPPP
feature should also be enabled as the users dialing in will require the
connection process to be automatic as possible.
Any details about mgetty, pppd etc should also be noted.
If anyone has any advice on this matter I would be most grateful to hear
from you.
Thanks in advance

I have that card... use the dos software (Qstart) to disable pnp and set
a permanent address in eeprom.
Then go to your standard linux startup script (i use slackware, where
that is /etc/rc.d/rc.modules) and find/edit/insert the generic NE2000
module with:
/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x[ur card's io address here]
mine says:
/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x240
reboot and u should be fine. Point is, the KNE20PnP is prolly the
easiest nic to set up in linux once you turn off PnP.

Hi,
Logged in as root I could not get this to work. I have no password on
my root as it is an at home lan with no security need. So my log in as
root is username root password (nothing). It boots me out I presume
because you must have a user with a password. I will try this latter once
I have Samba working.
Cheers

You could try running SWAT in demo mode with the -a option in
inetd.conf on Slackware when you write in the SWAT line
<swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/local/samba/bin/swat swat
-a>

Short answer: No!
Long answer: The manufacturers of Winmodems have not released the specs for
the software necessary to make these into full function modems. Without
those specs, Linux developers are having a very hard time building drivers
that act like the windows DLLs supplied with winmodems. Thus, no support
for winmodems is currently available for Linux.
You're out of luck until (a) the manufacturers release the specs, and (b)
some happy Linux hacker builds a proper driver for your winmodem. Don't
hold your breath. ;-)
Sorry.

Subject: Set Rx mode to 0 addresses
Date: Thu, 04 Feb 1999 22:13:21 -0500
I'm trying to set up 2 NICs so that my linux box can be connected to
two separate networks.
The two cards are both 3coms eth0 is a 3c905b (PCI) and eth1 is a
3c509 (ISA). eth0 is 192.168.1.1, eth1 is 192.168.1.2
Both cards are recognized on start up. With both cards connected to
the same network I can ping both addresses no problem but if I try
to put one card on one network and one on the other - no go.
I looked at /var/log/messages and I when eth1 is intialized there
is the message Set Rx mode to 1 addresses. A few lines later the
message Set Rx mode to 0 addresses appears. From ifconfig it does
look as if eth0 is doing all the most of the receiving and eth1 is
doing most of the transmitting.
Am I missing something on the software side or is this a hardware
problem? Should I try a different brand of NIC?

Thanks.
The correct answer was to add the following to my options { }; block in
named.conf:
forward first;
forwarders {
ip1;
ip2;
};
That initially did not work. I had to repopulate my root.hints file (it was
previously empty). Apparently it uses this in conjunction with the forwarders
to complete the DNS request. I'll find out for sure later.

Subject: PPP problems under 2.2.1
Date: 4 Feb 1999 20:10:25 GMT
After upgrading to 2.2.1 (from 2.0.32), the PPP connection stopped
working. All necessary software has been upgraded with the kernel (the
system is RH5.2 based). Login and PAP authentication apparently succeed,
but nothing goes through. The "bad frame" errors (see log) keep coming
about every 30 seconds. Pinging any host also causes a bad frame
message.
The modem is actually a ZyXel external ISDN connected via ttyS2 with
high-speed serial card - in essence acting as a very high speed modem.
Everything was, thus, working perfectly under the old kernel & pppd.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a SurfBoard 1000 one way modem. My ISP has posted on their web site
the drivers for Linux. I am in the process of trying to get it up and
running.

It doesn't sound like you have IP Forwarding turned on. Or you are
missing route statements. Given the following:
LAN A (150.150.150.0/24)
|
ROUTER A ETH0 (150.150.150.100/32)
ROUTER A PPP0 (192.168.1.1/32)
|
ROUTER B PPP0 (192.168.1.2/32)
ROUTER B ETH0 (150.150.151.100/32)
|
LAN B (150.150.151.0/24)
Machines on LAN A must have one of these two route:
route add -net 150.150.151.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 150.150.151.100
or
route add default gw 150.150.151.100
ROUTER A must have these routes:
route add -net 150.150.150.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev ppp0
route add -net 150.150.151.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.2
ROUTER B must have corresponding routes.
LAN B must have corresponding routes.
I would expect that pppd would set up some of these routes (the ones for
192.168.1.0/24) automatically.
Hope this helps,
Luca

These problems are actually going to be releated to the entries in
/etc/resolv.conf. This is the file that specifices the name servers to
use, so you would want to add the CompuServe name server IPs in here.
Check out the resolv.conf man page. And, alternately, you can setup a
local DNS server in caching mode. Check out DNS and BIND for O'Reilly.
