Hi, have trouble with this. Keep getting "setsockopt" error message
when trying to use IPPORTW or IPMASQADM. I upgraded from 2.0.36 to
2.2.1 and couldn't even use IPFWADM (got setsockopt error messages).
I reverted back to 2.0.36 but still no luck. HELP!

I have installed wu-ftp, but am having problems with logging in. I can
telnet and ping fine. When I try to login as a regular user I get the
error "421 Service not available" after I enter my password. I have
tried logging in as all of my regular users and receive the same
results.  I am running red-hat 5.2, kernel  2.0.36

Any help would be appreciated, thank you

Info from my system;

/etc/ inetd.conf for ftp reads:

ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd

I removed the default "-l -a" so that nothing is logged and do not use
the ftpaccess file(I believe this is default, I have tried -A too)

 /etc/ftpusers file does not have any regular users defined in it so
they should not be getting denied service

/etc/ftpgroups is empty

/etc/ftphosts is also empty (everything commented out)

Read the Masquerading HOWTO at www.linux.org under support. It'll tell
you how to hide your lan behind one linux box so that all the traffic
appears to come from the one ip address.

I would double check and make sure you are not running WDC's disk manager
utility. Secondly, double check and scan the hdd for errors. Thirdly, see if you
have any trouble installing linux on another hard drive, or try installing
another operating system, to test the controller and hard drive. You might also
have to format the drive too..

ipchains requires ip_forwarding to be on in order for firewalling to
work, this is mentioned in the doc. If you want to make sure that
no one is forwarding through your host, just do the following as part of
your ipchains setup:
ipchains -P forward DENY

This will set the default rule for forwarding to DENY.

or 2.2.1. Here are some relevant logs:

First, under 2.0.36 --

Feb 5 21:29:27 noodlenoggin pppd[225]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root,
uid 0

<magic 0x8d847a8b> <pcomp> <accomp>]

(it goes on to successfully negotiate a connection).

Now, under 2.2.1 --

Feb 5 21:32:36 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root,
uid 0
Feb 5 21:33:01 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: Serial connection established.
Feb  5 21:33:02 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: Using interface ppp0
Feb  5 21:33:02 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem

Feb  5 21:33:04 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xdc <asyncmap 0xa0000>
<magic 0xa2caebdf> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Feb  5 21:33:04 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0xdc <asyncmap 0xa0000>
<magic 0xa2caebdf> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Feb  5 21:33:05 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0xa0000>
<magic 0x99eb716e> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Feb  5 21:33:06 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xdd <asyncmap 0xa0000>
<magic 0xa2caebdf> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Feb  5 21:33:06 noodlenoggin pppd[146]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0xdd <asyncmap 0xa0000>
<magic 0xa2caebdf> <pcomp> <accomp>]

and it keeps this up until my ISP hangs up on it.

What I don't understand is that ppp seems to think the id on a packet
arriving *from* the ISP is different, depending on *my* kernel
version! Same scripts; ppp was compiled using the 2.2.1 headers.

Run the following command to find out which domains trigger
local delivery:

#sendmail -bt
>$=w

It seems that you have forgotten to add the following line
Cwandante.mn.org
To make andante.mn.org (and other?) a local domino.

Sendmail treats andante.mn.org as non local domain and
forwards its to smart host (back again)

Anyone know how to see how much traffic is being used by individuals
going through a firewall? Someone suggested ipfwadm, but when I see the
stats, I can only see a single count of packets - no users are
specified, but I probably used the wrong policy. Anyone know what kind
of arguments to use to setup the policy and query it later? I've been
through the man pages and they have zero examples.

I have recently stumbled over exactly the same problem. I changed the option
section to:

forward only;
forwarders { etc ... };

and had to remove the root zone to make it work.

Here's what I guess is happening (please correct me if I'm wrong - I'm trying to
learn dns): First bind tries to resolve names in local zones (master or slave),
if negative it consults the root zone and if the root zone servers (masters of
the Internet :o) can't answer bind gives up. Only if there is no root zone it
consults the specified forwarders. My isp firewalls out direct access to root
servers - perhaps your isp doesn't - in other words your configuration probably
makes bind consult the root servers directly, thus bypassing the forwarders
completely ?

Michael

Your NT staff is full of shit. Lease renewal is a client side
responsibility and, if you got the original address, then you will get a
renewal when you ask for it IF THE SERVER IS WORKING CORRECTLY. Sorry to
shout but dem's da facts.

The renewal is process simple, After the lease is half way expired the
client sends a DHCPREQUEST for the original configuration to the server.
The server is supposed to respond with a DHCPACK and renew the lease. If
for some reason the lease cannot be renewed, the sever will send a DHCPNAK
and the client must start the process all over at DHCPDISCOVER.

The dhcpcd 0.70 client has some bugs, but not renewing a lease correctly is
not one of them.

Subject: printing large number of jobs

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have RH 5.2, and I have HP LJ 5M connected to my box via a parallel
cable. I experience the following problem

I send a large number (say, 30) of small jobs to the printer. I see
the jobs piling up in the queue. The printer starts printing, but it
stops after twenty or so, says "Processing job", but does not happen
anything---even after a day. The last ten jobs disappear from the
queue.

A typical (though useless) example would be this:

Create the script. prtest.sh

#!/bin/sh
i=1
while [ $i -le 30 ]; do
    dvips $1
    i=$[ i + 1 ]
done

create and latex a simple latex file prtest.tex

\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
Hello, printer
\end{document}

and run

./prtest prtest

(The actual situation does make sense, but the above example shows the
problem).

My other printer, an Okidata 810eps did not show he problem---after it
was warmed up. But if I sent the jobs after the printer was idle for
say one hour---it started printing garbage.

I also tried to use the HP 5M as a network printer, but after printing
5 of the jobs, it started printing garbage.

I called HP, and of course they told me the problem is with Linux, and
they have to make a driver.

Here is my /etc/printcap (created by RH's printtool)

##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL POSTSCRIPT 600x600 letter {} PostScript Default 1
lp0|lp|PostScript|wd|ps|HP-in-207:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0:\

        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :af=/var/adm/lp0-acct:\
        :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/filter:

Thanks for any help
