Running 2.0.35 I can't get CU-Seeme to masquerade. I've loaded the mod,
even downloaded the dotfile for ipfwadm and double checked that things
were appropriately set up. CU-Seeme can find the chat rooms but can't
actually connect.
I've tried opening 7648 and 7649 by hand using ipfwadm, and this doesn't
seem to get me anywhere. Is anyone successfully using CU-Seeme (or any
other videoconf software) with success on a 2.0.35 system or later? Can
you tell me what you did to get it working?
Thanks in advance,
Gregory Sorensen

When you order, they send you a FREE 3COM PCI or ISA (you decide) NIC.
No reason not to take a freebie. You can then use whichever you want,
the key is that they won't "support" a card that they don't provide to
you. Interesting, because the fellows that came to my house didn't look
like they could walk upright, let alone support a NIC. (OTOH, the
people I talked to on the phone at the BA ADSL office were very
knowledgeable and helpful).
So take the free NIC and then use it or not. It is, after all, free
when you purchase the Westell ADSL modem. BTW, $200 for that was also a
good deal.

Mine didn't. I had to call and then wait for a day for my service to
start properly. Per my other post, they will happily provide you with a
PCI 3com 10 card with your Westell ADSL "modem".

hmmm, you say DOS utils???
i once tried that with windoze....hmmm, the diagnostic-program(the one that
came with the net-card) said that the connection didn't work, and there was
a RAM(what?) failure on the net-card......
it couln't connect to the other machines diagnostic program......but somehow
i could transfer over 600 mb over the net in about 20min......how could i do
that when i just tested that with the diagnostic program.....hmmm wired,
right? i guess it wass because of i was running windows:-))
i tried to run the diagnostic program from a "clear" dos-command and from a
dos-prompt within windows....no succes at all....
my advise: do not trust 100% in these diagnostic-programs.....they may help,
but sometimes they don't.....
Best Regards

Problem resolved! The IMAP package was installed and running fine, it
turned out that the machine decided that all:all in /etc/hosts.deny was
worth paying more attention to than the specific IP addresses I allowed in
hosts.allow. After commenting it out and restarting inetd, all started
working again. Why it stopped, I'll probably never know, but the
configuration that stopped was the configuration I had been using since
time began (or at least since I switched from Slackware to Redhat a couple
of years ago).
I had commented out the POP2 line a long time ago, but POP3 was in there
and kicking all along.

I don't believe RH supports Mo chips. You can get it flavored for Intel or
SPARC, but not 68k.
At one time, there was a project underway to port the Mach Kernel to the
Amiga, but I don't know what happened with that.

Hello,
I have 2 PC with RedHat 5.0 and a null modem cable. I want to connect them
with the cable to have a network (IP adress and ...).
I've read HOWTOs about SLIP, PPP, PLIP, net and I don't find anything about
the subject.
Could someone explain me how I must build this network or give some neat
references about the subject ?
Thanks a lot.

Subject: client software for modem pool server?
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 08:43:49 GMT
How would you implement a dial-out modem server?
I have a client wanting to attach a pool of modems to a computer on
his 25-host LAN, and let that machine become the modem server for
everybody. It would displace the current several modems on individual
workstations where those guys can dial out all they want and the rest
of them can't dial out at all.
Assuming I can outfit the intended server with a multiport card
product and linux driver to match (surfing Cyclades, Digi, and the
like after reading the serial HOWTO and searching dejanews is
encouraging about this), what about any software for this specific
purpose? It would need to be "modem pool client" software to take
advantage of the presence of the modem pool server.
This seems not to be a job for diald, as that's confined to the
limited situation of trading TCP/IP packets and auto-dialing if the
route involves a modem connection (I think). These guys want to dial
bulletin boards and things like that, as if via their serial port but
over the lan and via the modem server's serial port instead.
Can anybody advise me?

Go into minicom and try to dial your ISP. If your modem doesn't respond,
that may be your problem (is it a win modem?) /usr/doc/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO
gives a pretty good step through

If minicom isn't showing the "right" answer, your modem is not
configured properly. Look into your modem manual and look for a way to
turn on true connect speed reporting. It's different for every modem,
because there wasn't anything like it in the original Hayes standard.
Sometimes it's in an S register, and sometimes it's in one of the extra
commands, often one of the ones beginning with the ampersand (&) or
percent (%) signs.
Once you get that done, you can use the following command to fairly
reliably get the connect speed:
# tac /etc/ppp/connect-errors |grep "^CONNECT" | head -1
This works at least with PPP 2.3.3.

I've tried Slackware, SUSE, and Redhat. Of the three, Redhat was by far the
easiest to get going on my hardware. SUSE is pretty damned cool, 5.3 comes
with both KDE and Gnome, but it took me awhile to get X going, I still
haven't got my sound or network card going. It's been awhile since I've
done Slackware so I should try it again along with trying Caldera for the
first time.
