I am new to linux but have done some work on unix for years. What I am
trying to do is set up a RH linux system as an e-mail server. I have an
NT server set up doing DNS and may have some problems there but the e-mail
is basically working except...
I can't get the e-mail to default without the server name. For example I
can send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but I can't get
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to work. It just bounces back.
Any help would be appreciated.

Assuming you are storing all mail "locally" on your Linux box, edit the
following to have sendmail receive email for your domain.
<cut/paste from /etc/sendmail.cw>
# sendmail.cw - include all aliases for your machine here.
mycompany.com
To have sendmail re-address all outbound email to come from domain.com
instead of host.domain.com, edit the following line in...
<cut/paste from /etc/sendmail.cf>
# who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M)
DMmycompany.com

Subject: mount problems under 2.2 (redhat 6.0)
Date: Thu, 05 Aug 1999 21:45:39 GMT
I recently installed Redhat 6.0, with all updated RPMS. I installed over
the network via NFS from a local mirror of Redhat's site.
When I try to mount *ANYTHING*, the mount command just hangs (and I can't
kill the process). This happens for mounts of nfs systems, ncmounts to do
Netware volumes, and even trying to locally mount a floppy!
This is not a problem with my hardware, nor my network. Does anyone have
any idea what I may be doing wrong? I had no problems with my 2.0 kernels
for all sorts of mounting. I am thinking there may be something I am
missing or forgetting so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
Thanks,
Matt

Appreciate all the help to get my Dialing on Demand using PPPD running!
It's works on my single Linux box without DIALD or anthing stuuck into
it!
I'm running Mandrake 6.0 out of the box on a k-6 266. Nothing
sophisticated. After about 6 weeks using KPPP to get onto my server,
hearing a few people talking about how they were able to use pppd
without any thing else, I decided that this newbie was going to make it
his priority to do the same. Thanks to the persons who posted their
option scripts. That was the real key!
This is what worked for me. If it gives you a clue to doing it for
yourself, I hope you pass it on to others!

I used linuxconf to turn on PPP0 when I booted up and that was it!
Hope this helps someone!

Subject: ping server, get client ip

Hi... I've set up a redhat 6.0 server (MYSERV: 192.168.1.1) using samba
for file/print sharing. MYSERV is also a domain controller for
MYDOMAIN. MYCLIENT (with win98: 192.168.1.2) can "ping 192.168.1.1"
with no problems, but "ping MYSERV" sends packets to 192.168.1.2 not
192.168.1.1. I thought this must be a name resolution problem, but I
can't seem to find the host file that would control this.
I have WINS and DNS enabled on the pc; they're using 192.168.1.1 as the
server (DNS also uses MYSERV for host and MYDOMAIN for domain).
I'm a little confused with the host files on MYSERV. Could someone
please fill me in on the differences between lmhosts and hosts??
hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.1.1 MYSERV
192.168.1.2 MYCLIENT
lmhosts:
localhost MYSERV
MYCLIENT MYCLIENT
I used to have lmhosts like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.1 MYSERV
but somebody told me that i should change it to the above... Needless to
say, both versions yield the same results...
Any help/ideas is much appreciated....

check your cnfiguration on the windows side:
@Home geniuses set up your home page as www, mail server as mail, news
server as news, etc. The servers resolve to www.whatever.home.com,
mail.whatever.home.com, news.whatever.home.com, etc. -- that is assuming you
are connecting directly. What you need to do is find out *what* this
"whatever" is (look at the info sheet they gave you when they set it up),
and change the settings accordingly.

Subject: Re: Trafic Shaper woes...

You should register device shaper0. For example:
/sbin/insmod shaper -o shaper0
/sbin/route del 192.168.7.0
/sbin/shapecfg attach shaper0 eth1
/sbin/shapecfg speed shaper0 9600
/sbin/ifconfig shaper0 192.168.7.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
/sbin/route add -net 192.168.7.0 dev shaper0

|Friends,
|
|I have run into some problems with implementing Trafic Shaper on my Linux
2.2.10
|box and am hoping someone could give me a pointer.
|
|Basically I am able to attach a shaper device to my interface eth0 but when
I
|try to do the same with interface eth1 it gives me the error,
|
|shaper: No such device
|
|which is incorrect because I am using that very same device to telnet in.
|
|Second question (a little more complicated)
|
|I would like to control Internet access for a client at 64Kbps. I thought
about
|using 2 shaper devices (until I hit the problem above) but it occured to me
that
|this might not be possible. If a shaper device can only control outgoing
packets
|and on each device (eth0 and eth1) of my multihomed Linux router I have a
shaper
|limiting transmission at 64Kbps, the client can get effective throughput of
|128Kbps since he could transmit and receive at 64Kbps in each direction.
|
|Is there any way to control aggregate bandwidth (sum of incomming and
outgoing
|traffic) other than connecting two boxes with, for ex., a null modem cable?
|
|Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Subject: Re: what's required for rlogin
Date: Thu, 5 Aug 1999 19:11:16 -0500
I am new to linux, but am familiar with rlogin on other UNIX boxes, so
this should apply also or be relatively similar. Each system has an
overall /etc/hosts.equiv file that can contain names of other machines
and how they are to be treated by the system for using remote commands
such as rlogin, rcp, and rsh and root. Each user can then specify
machine name and logname pairs in their own $HOME/.rhosts file that
the system will consider as the equivalent user and will not prompt
for a password when a remote command connection is established. The
idea is that each user is giving their own security up when entries in
their .rhosts exists. This does not, however, endanger the remainder
of the properly configured system.
Example:
Let's say that I wanted to rlogin to host A from host B without being
prompted for a password and/or I wanted to be able to use rcp or rsh
to host A from host B. My login name on host A is jj and my login
name on host B is jjj. In my jj home directory on host A, I need to
have a .rhosts file that contains the following line:
B jjj
This means that the OS running on A will treat requests from user jjj
on host B as being the same as coming from host A user jj. In the
absence of this, the OS on A will prompt all requests from B for a
password which foils rcp and rsh commands. With this, A will not
prompt requests from jjj on B for a password to execute rcp or rsh
commands on A as jj.
Are we thoroughly confused yet? I hope not, but that is it in a
nutshell - barring typos, etc. It gets a little more complicated for
rdist as it must have root permission, but you are not asking about
that.
