I am new to linux. I installed red hat version 5.2 on my pentium 133
machine recently. I am reading red hat linux secrets by Naba Barkakati
and in chapter 2 he says that to re-configure the kernel to change
directories to /usr/src/linux and issue the command make config. When I
issue this command I get the error message - *** no rule to make
'config'. stop. Can anyone tell me why I get this error message and how
i can re-configure the kernel? I wish to add PPP support so I can use
linux to access my ISP.

Hello all,
My problem is with: ifconfig eth0 172.16.2.8 on EE100B
As soon as I run ifconfig, Linux 221 locks tight.
With no network it appears stable.
Boot time sees the device as version 2.0.36
ifconfig eth0 displays the device which appears as though its there
correctly/
I have a working version of 2.0.36).
I have updated the NetTools 1.50 to the latest.
Took SMP out of the kernel and no modules for networking, What else?
The eth0 is a EE100B which is pretty standard but I am sharing irq's
.
PCI irq sharing broken in 221 ?
Any help is appreciated!
TIA

I've questioned the validity of off-loading the DSP functions to the
processor anyway. This is a hack that I think should be left in the
realm of Windows where off-loading embedded processes to the main CPU is
remeninst of Microsoft's standard practice of throwing memory at problem
rather than actually fixing bugs.

I've got a machine which is connected to a gateway firewall on an
ethernet card, I can only get access to the other side by telnetting
into that machine first.
I am trying to set up a modem ppp connection which I can use to get
proper access to the rest of the net. I have everything set up, and the
remote computer is being dialed fine. Not just that, but it's also
connecting properly and logging in fine.
The only problem is that even though I have 'defaultroute' specified on
the pppd command line, the ppp0 interface is not being set to the
default route, the gateway remains default.
On connection I get the message: 'not replacing existing default route
to eth0'
What do I need to do to get ppp0 to be the default route?

I am preparing to start moving some of my home network over to Linux. I have
three windows machines and want at least two of them to run RedHat., In the
meantime I also had a DOS machine (486) with a BBS and had tried to install
MS networking with an NE2000 card, but never manahed to get it to work. The
machine has a 500 MB harddisk and B/W Hercules card (now that's old) but no
CD-ROM, so I want to get it on the network as a trial for the rest and to
learn a little about Linux.
I have managed to install Monkey Linux from 5 floppies, and wonder if this
is the way. I shall have to start from scratch (I don't even know how to
edit a text file in Linux :-(. I would like to use Monkey (or another mini)
to connect the 486 to my Windows TCP/IP network so I can progress from there
(then I will have access to cable Internet and a CD-ROM at least, as well as
all the software waiting on my network machines...
Is Monkey a good choice, or is maybe a cludgier choice better: just get the
TCP/IP running. Is there a newbie's guide to something so simple? (All the
HOWTOs I read assume I know how to edit a Linux text file...)

I think it was worth the upgrade to Samba 2.0 just for the Swat web based
management too. Though I'm not a wiz at linux (yet) i found it to be pretty
simple as long as I read the docs included in the tar file.
It will install safely 'over' a previous version, so you can even do a 'make
revert' to go back you your previous version should you have problems. In
short, here is all it took:
Download the samba_latest.tar.gz file
gunxip and tar -e the file
run the included ./configure
type 'make'
type 'make install'
Then you have to manually edit /ect/initd.conf and /ect/services to start
the service on boot.. (You might not even do this. I did because I had
removed the older version package first)
Some of the other stuff (Like the enhanced encryption for NT passwords)
takes a little more effort, but the docs and HOWTOs included in the tar ar
very easy to follow.
Thats it!! Easy as PI.

StarOffice outbox querys a DNS server to see where it's gonna deliver
it's mail to. So, when you try to point it to localhost, it's not
gonna find anything. Try 127.0.0.1 or use your providers SMTP server,

everything prints oriented portrait even when you try to print in

landscape with no problems. Anyone have any ideas on what may be going

...but I've been trying to get Masqdialer working, and it appears that I
need to turn IP forwarding support on in the kernel.
Well, in the 2.2 kernel, all documentation states that to enable this
support, I need to enable "/proc" support, and "sysctl" support. Both
of which are enabled. There does not appear to be anywhere else to set
anything up (that I can find).
Linuxconf seems to think that forwarding is not enabled in the kernel
(who am I to argue?). I have manually set /etc/sysconfig/network
"FORWARD_IPV4=true", but that has little effect.
Can someone help point me back in the right direction? I'm pretty sure
I've strayed way off base, and am overlooking something pretty obvious.

I just got the RPMs for sendmail 8.9.2, and figured updating was a good
thing to do, as the updates incorporate better security. (I haven't gotten
the bugs out of using my Linux box with my ISP yet, but I'm going to take a
whack again once I get my new ISP account set up)/
I'm using RH5.2, which had sendmail 8.8.7 and sendmail-cf 8.8.7 as RPMS.
The new version has RPMs for sendmail, sendmail-cf, and sendmail-config.
According to the query in the RPM for sendmail-config, "This is needed,
eventually there will be multiple configs to choose from."
However, the files it contains (list follows) conflict with those installed
by sendmail.
Do I stick it all in, using the --force option in rpm? Do I leave out
sendmail-config? Why is there a sendmail-config anyway?
Thanks in advance.

OK, I am not a networking guru. I'm a new adsl customer and I was
suprised to find out that
the IP number I am assigned by my service provider (cais) is not a "real
ip number"
but it is a reserved ip number. This bummed me out. I want to be able to
connect to
my adsl computer from the real world (i.e. I want to telnet to the adsl
machine from
other machines with real ip's).
I've been pouring over the NET-3-HOWTO for some insight and am unclear
how to
proceed. Will IP tunneling work?
Or am I attempting the impossible?
Secondly, are there any adsl providers who assign "real ip's" (not
reserved) to their
adsl accounts? A dynamic IP number would be okay with me as long as it
is a
real address and not a reserved IP number mascarading behind some
router.
Thanks for your help.

think I have removed the old Samba 1.9x that RH5.1 installed...is there a
good way to check for that and give it the heave-ho?
as a bonus, I also managed to get Apache configged and working with
FrontPage extensions....why is it always the stuff that needs to work later
on after system has been setup works first and the necessaries and

I'm sticking it out until I get it configged and working as I really want to

The things you are trying to set manually are automatically set by
dhcp. If you want something different, do it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
For example, I add net specific routes and gateway and remove the
default route (so I can use defaultroute for pppd).
But if you are trying to set a static IP for the machine, then set
everything else you need and DON'T use dhcpcd in netconf.

I just d/l'd traffic-vis-0.30-1.i386.rpm and get the same error, I would
suggest that it is a problem with the traffic rpm's. BTW, I don't use

uswest.net assigns "real" addresses. I don't think I could tolerate
being behind a NAT firewall that the ISP controlls. I have heard of
this being done by some of the cable companies also. They seem to
think the only reason fo an internet connection is to web browse.

No, DOS/Windows viruses cannot execute in the linux
environment. It may be possible if you are using
DOS/Windows emulation in linux (dosemu/WINE, etc.) and if
you have a dual boot system with both linux and Windows on
the same machine DOS boot record viruses can infect the boot
record when you use DOS/Windows and subsequently cause
problems that affect your whole machine.

Well, the one that was out there for free shut down last month:

The other commercial one I've got bookmarked is http://www.ml.org/
Could be others but that's my two bits.

I am looking for X-terminals, preferably relatively new, although
I'll take anything that will work with a Linux client box. I would
prefer NCD. If anyone has an X-terminal or two they're willing to part
with, please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a price range.
thanks,

I've been paying particular attention to PPP connection problems for many
months now and I've only seen one post - a recent one - that said this
worked for him. I would certainly be interested in learning how you
came to _know_ that ppp-2.3.5 has such a bug. It seems very unlikely
that a bug that would affect virtually everyone using ppp-2.3.5 could
have remained undiscovered until now. I've used 2.3.5 without problems
under kernels 2.0.36 and 2.1.131, although not extensively.
The one post about this was running kernel 2.2.1 so it's remotely
possible that there's a bug in the new kernel PPP support (found in
linux/drivers/net/ppp.c) causing trouble. But even this seems rather
unlikely.
