You don't say what is the error message...
Check out if you have portmap running, mountd running and telnetd running.
Check out /etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny
Check out inetd.conf (this name is for RH5)

For cable connections check out: http://junitec.ist.utl.pt/hwb/ or some
mirror near you...

After a good null modem cable you just have to enable ppp in your kernel and
run it...!
But for the real thing think on buying two net cards, they are unexpensive
and much, much, much faster...

First check out in /lib/modules/ ... something ... if you have file 3c50x.o
or simmilar (find / -name "3c5*" -print)

if you have try this:
modprobe 3c50x

this loads the module for this card, if it loads correctly you'll have some
success messages. also ifconfig -a will let you see the new eth0

after successfuly loading the correct driver you must configure it by hand
in /etc/conf.modules to load it on boot

delete any line conserning eth0
include this:
alias eth0 3c50x

All this assuming that the correct module's name is 3c50x.o (you'll have to
check on this...)
you can find it all here: http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/

If he is using actual ip addresses it won't be going to a DNS.

Hi!

I have 3 Linux machines (RH5.0) networked together. I have set up one as an NIS
server and the others as NIS clients.

Whenever I use a YP client like yppasswd, it fails giving the error "RPC: Timed out"

I can't localize the problem. I'll greatly appreciate any help here.

Subject: Timy synchronization

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have two time sync issues ...

1. How do I configure the Linux box (server on our LAN) to get the time
from a time server via the Internet?

2. How can I get the WinXX machines on the lan to sync to the Linux
server?

Before we switched from Windows NT to Linux on the server, we were
running a freebie applicaiton from ZD (ExactTime) that did a dial-out to
either the time server in DC or in Boulder, and the WinXX machines used
the NET TIME command to get correct time from the NT server. The
long-distance charges were not great, but the dial-outs were a nuisance.

BTW ... the Linux server is running RH 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36). The network
is running Samba 2.0.

Step 1: For your internal network, use test network numbers 192.168.x.y
instead of 192.0.x.y which are valid internet ip addresses.

Step 2: Set up interfaces on linux box (you have done this already)

Step 3: Set up routing on linux box.
route add -net 127.0.0.0 # localhost pseudo network
route add -net <university segment> # university segment
route add -net 192.168.1.0 # your private lan
route add default gw <university gw> # the gateway on the uni segment

Step 4: Enable IP forwarding in kernel (you have done this already)

Step 5: Setup masquerading.
ipfwadm -I -p accept
ipfwadm -O -p accept
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -I -f
ipfwadm -O -f
ipfwadm -F -f

ipfwadm -F masq -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0 -W eth0

Step 6: Use ping, traceroute, and tcpdump to diagnose problems.

Hope this helps,

Use xntp, a Network Time Protocol (ntp) client and server. Configure it
to connect to the Internet to get time. Configure it to broadcast the
time in your local subnet.
>

Use K9, a small time synchronization program that runs as a service in
both 95 and NT. It listens to ntp broadcasts. It was originally written
to listen to broadcasts from Tardis. Look for this at www.tucows.com or
www.shareware.com.

The LinkSys card has a tulip clone that's close enough for the

1. look for help pages for your ISP. Mine had the perfect pppd setup
already written down in the help pages. I found this AFTER I connected
with xisp. Calling customer support might help, but mine was clueless
about it even though it was right there in the webpages.

2. Failing that...try xisp. It worked from the first time I used it.

Hi !

I tried to install smb2www as descriped by the author. But when I try to
access http://localhost/samba/smb2www.pl
then I get the message 403:You are not allowed to access the file on this
server.....
It is no problem to access other sites on my apache-server.
Samba is working fine, I have perl 5.004 installed.
I changed the /etc/httpd/srm.conf (Alias and Scriptalias ) as I was told
after running perl Install.pl !

any idea ?

Thanks in advance

tim

I have the same problem and your configuration seems correct
regarding my one.
Don't try the old dhcpcd: 0.6 or 0.70, they are not suppose to work
with the new kernel.
I have also played with the option -d and send relevant message
to the maintener. This is his answer:

So I have tried 3 without success and I don't really know what significant
stuff I can put for -h, -i and -I options. Do you have any idea?
