Open a socket (any network socket will do), then do something like
(need to #include <sys/ioctl.h> and <net/if.h>)

   struct ifreq req;
   strcpy(req.ifr_name, interface_name);

   ioctl(socket_fd, SIOCGIFHWADDR, &req);

struct ifreq is defined in <net/if.h>. The MAC address will be
returned in req.ifr_hwaddr

hello,

I have my own (little) network at home, a ftp server and a webserver but

I have ordinary internet account and only one (static) ip address. But
if I want to connect both machines connected to the internet they must
have different ip addresses because they have different hostnames. Can I

have two ip addresses on one line and how? And if not, is there another
solution?

Thanks!

I use mgetty. Quite an old version even. It gives me:

Ringback (not callback): first time you call the telephone nr of the
modem it won't pick up, the second time (within a configurable time) it
does. Great if you do not (yet) have ISDN. Use the same line for your
fax, PPP-, terminal dial-in and normal voice calls

AutoPPP: Use the same standard Unix user accounts for both terminal and
PPP login.

Receiving faxes: when the modem does a FAX connect a file containing the
RAW fax image is saved. A script is then called to do further
processing. Haven't configured that yet, but with some tools to be
gotten separately you can do cool things like autoprinting faxes or
having them mailed to an e-mail adres etc.
There's also a sendfax program to, you've guessed it, send faxes. You
need ghostscript to generate convert ps to fax format.

I am studying computer science specializing in networking and is about to do
my final assignment. I was wondering if there was something that needs to be
done to Linux that would fit the bill.

The assignment is supposed to take 6 months to complete at 3 days efficient
work pr. week. This includes writing a report. There has got to be a fair
amount of programming involved. I am considering to replace the routing
database with a level compressed tree, but i am afraid there is not enough
work in that job.

Got any ideas?

Kind regards

Tried all day to get the IBM Auto 16/4 ISA up and running with 2.2.1. I am
giving up.
It ran just fine under 2.0.36. No problems there.

The messages that come up are the following:
modprobe and insmod answer: ...ibmtr.o: init_module: Device or ressource busy
syslog says: ibmtr: register_trdev() returned non-zero
The pretty little LED's on the adapters back plate are blinking all the time.

Pls help as this machine is being setup for a *very* big bank, and I am trying
to raise the tux banner in here.

Pls respond per Email *also*, as my usenet access is rather limited.
TIA Tobias

Make sure you are configured, at the phone company, to do 2B. I know
this sounds stupid but there are ordering codes that only allow 1
channel of data and one channel of voice. This is particularly a
problem with some older USR literature as it gave an ordering code
that wouldn't allow 2B.

An easy way around this is to order a universal configuration called
EZISDN 1. All telcos know this code, I hope, and it gives you all the
bells and whistles.

Here is Ameritech's doc on EZISDN 1

RedHats 5.2 and Linux 2.2.x has support for 3COM 3C90x cards which are
10/100Mb so try those.

_______________________________________________________________
Hello,

I need some help, please. I am running RedHat 5.2 on a a clone pc,
and I am trying to connect to my ISP which is called Integrity Online.
The problem is that they have a firewall, and I have never set Linux up
to deal with a firewall before. I can successfully connect to my ISP,
it assigns me a dynamic ip address, as usual. The problem is I cannot
get out to the internet. Netscape tells me something like it cannot
find the proxy server that I have set up in it even though I know that
the proxy name is correct, it is the same info I use in NT 4.0 and Win95

and they connect and cruise fine. I have pinged the firewall from my NT

and Win95 connections and have put the corresponding ip number in my
hosts file in order for their to be a dns resolution on my end. If I
did not, Netscape complains that "proxy.iolusa.com is unknown" and will
not let me continue to configure it. If I try to ping the firewall or
any valid internet address from my Linux connection, I get the error
from ping that the network is unreachable. The protocol that I am using

is tcp-ip, of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have
banged my head against this for awhile and have not gotten anywhere.
Thanks in advance.

You don't want hard-coded addresses here. You do want to use names.

Find out the IP address of the ISP's name servers. The only thing you
need to set up for name resolution is /etc/resolv.conf. It should
look something like this:

        domain pacific.net.sg
        nameserver 192.169.33.3 203.120.90.40

(According to their external DNS servers, those are the correct name
server IP addresses. Your mileage may vary.)

After hours and days of fooling with Win95/NT dialing in to Linux via PPP
(You know it's gott to work because ISP's use Linux everywhere) I think
that you have to make a registry change in Windoze to allow clear text
passwords. I think this has bearing on Samba and PPP.

Unfortunately, I lost the instructions (had them on a Windows box, of
course) but you can search the registry for EnablePlainTextPassword, set it
to 1. All the precautions about changing a Windoze Registry aply.

Isn't that done with routing, not an ipfwadm rule?

If 192.168.2.2 is the gateway, then that ipfwadm rule would cause the
gateway to forward and masquerade it's own packets (?!) to anywhere,
but won't forward and masquerade the network he's trying to gateway, no?
Seems to me it should have been 192.168.0.0 or 192.168.2.0 (and I'm a
bit weak on the 2-digit netmask suffix).

I have portmap running along with mountd and nfsd and have put in /etc/exports

the networks cards are running fine (ifconfig shows lo and eth0)

/etc/hosts.deny contains portmap: ALL

when I run rpcinfo -p it shows up like in the NFS-HOWTO

Any help would be appreciated, I've read all the HOW-TOs and am totally confused.

The internal addresses you are using (192.168.x.y) are the class-C test
network addresses. Packets with either source or destination addresses in
this range will not be forwarded by the Internet's routers.

It is correct to use these addresses for internal networks, so how to
solve your problem?

You must use Masquerading so that all packets that leave the firewall
appear to originate from the firewall (since it *does* have a valid ip
address). Read the Masquerade HOWTO; it explains what you need to do.

If you want to cut to the chase...

ipfwadm -F masq -S 192.168.2.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -W eth0

will cause the firewall to be masquerade your internal network.

Hope this helps,

Luca

Hi!

Kann mir wer sagen, wie man den aktuellen DHCP-Server
Status sehen kann?
Ich wrde gerne die zur Zeit vergebenen IP-Adressen
wissen!

Danke

Oliver,
I have tried Stalker Software's CommuniGatePro, it is a commercial package,
but it has a very nice web interface for both administration and even for
users mail if you want. I It is like $500 for a 50 user licenses as I
recall. I set it up the demo version in a night to route mail from a
single imap/pop3 mailbox on our ISP to many separate pop/imap mailboxes on
my local Linux box. I am having trouble with local email though. For now I
have to send to the ISP and then redeliver it back to my local server,
pretty inefficient. I am sure there is a way to work around this, but I
have not spent much time yet.

Overall I really like the product. I am technically proficient, but still
very inexperienced when it comes to Linux, so the web administration is
great for me. Even $500 isn't too much since I can write it off. I still
haven't committed and would too like to hear of other solutions, preferably
free ones.

BTW I'm using Caldera OpenLinux 1.3, but according to their website, they
handle *many* different platforms so I doubt your Linux version will be a
major issue. I use a 3com ISDN LAN Modem for a quasi static connection. I
poll the remote mailbox every minute.

Their URL is: www.stalker.com

Hope this helps,
Brandon

Have you tried pinging IP addresses, or domain names? If the former, and you
get no response, then networking probably isn't setup correctly. If the latter,
then do you have an active DNS server within TCP/IP reach of either or both
machine?

To set the domain and host name in Win95, you go into the networking setup under
the control panel. In there, you should a TCP/IP entry bound to your NIC. The
domain and host name setings are in there.

Under Linux, it should be all setup if you used the Red Hat install procedure
and answered the domain and host name questions.
